Michael Massey Obituary

Michael Sullivan Massey
1933-2015
Michael Sullivan Massey was born October 2, 1933 to Claude Clifton Massey and Irene Anistata Sullivan the fifth of five children.
Mike graduated from St. Thomas High School in 1951.
He met the love of his life, Mary Elizabeth Lovelace, and married her on October 2, 1953 at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church in Houston, TX by his uncle – Father Joseph Sullivan.
He was accepted into the Asbestos Workers Local 22 in 1953 where he worked for 44 years before retirement at age 62.
While a member of Local 22 he served one year as Sargent of Arms, two terms as Trustee, three terms on the executive board, and two terms as Vice President. In the first 15 years of his membership he missed only three monthly meetings; 1 time he was traveling, 1 time he had car trouble, and 1 time too much to drink. He helped organize the present Retirees Club of Local 22.
Mike was an active member of St Edwards Catholic Church for the last 18 years.
Mike and Betty had six children; Michael Raymond, wife Gayla, Steven Patrick, wife DeeDee, Deborah Lynn, Joseph Daren, wife Alice, Kelley Marie, and Casey Brian, wife Gaylynn. Have 12 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Mike did not have any favorites – he told them all they were his favorite when he talked to them. They were the light of his life. All of the grandchildren call him Big Daddy, because when his first granddaughter was born he felt like he was too young to be a "Grandfather", or "Gramps" or "Grumps", so he told them he was their "Big Daddy"; the one with all the brains – they were too young to know the difference. So that was that,
Visitation for Mike will be held Thursday, March 12, 2015 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the chapel of Forest Park The Woodlands. Funeral services will also be in the chapel of Forest Park The Woodlands at 9:30 AM on Friday, March 13, 2015.

We grew up with the Massey clan on Peach Lane and have so many wonderful memories of "Daddy Mass." He was bigger than life and was a force to be reckoned with. There was never a dull moment around the Massey house and we cherish all the childhood memories. Ms. Betty, Mike, Steve, Debbie, Kelly and Casey, we are thinking of you and your families. We know how hard this is and please know you are in our thoughts and prayers.

I offer my sincere condolences during this time of grief. I know that, no matter how long we have had our loved ones in our lives, we are NEVER ok with loosing them to death. Please take a moment to read Jehovah's promise found @ Is. 25:8, there it states that Jehovah will swallow up death FOREVER. I pray peace for the Massey family.

Heavenly father we praise Your name. All things that are worthy come from You and through You. So we now ask for You to cover the Massey family with your merciful grace as they grieve the loss of their beloved patriarch.

The feeling of sadness caused by our loss of one we love can only be assuaged by Your love. Our prayer is that in this hour and the hours to come Your presence will be palpable and steadfast so that the Massey family might lean on You in the weakness of their grief.

Pour out Your loving grace on these good people as they begin to focus on the light and hope that You shine into the darkness of grief they now find themselves.

Bring to them a glimpse of the joy that now belongs to Michael... For he suffers no more but rather he now enjoys the beauty of the place You prepared especially for him. Let THAT be the beginning of a celebration of his life here as they remember this good man.

It is in the strong and powerful name of Jesus that we ask You to hear our praises and this prayer. Amen!

There are so many great memories of Big Daddy that I have! He was such a funny and witty man. Always made me laugh but brought great perspective in tough situations. He was always someone I would go to for advice.

My very first plane ride was on a Friday in the 2nd grade. It was a huge deal to be going to visit Granny and Big Daddy on a plane, by myself. I was allowed to go under one condition. I had to learn my communion prayer for my upcoming ceremony. Not only did I learn it but I could say it in my sleep because Big Daddy made me say it at least 75 times a day. That trip was so special to me. Big Daddy made me a bird house in his shop and Granny painted it and stuck a button on the back that would sing "You are my Sunshine." I didn't know the words to the song so Big Daddy taught it to me. Every time I hear that song it makes me think of him. Such a wonderful trip and one I will never forget!

When I was in 7th grade Mom and Dad were letting me get a new pair of basketball shoes. They gave me their credit card to go into the store and get a pair for the upcoming season. I was NOT allowed under any circumstance to buy the new Michael Jordan shoes because they were entirely too expensive. Well, I bought them anyway and wore them out of the store so we wouldn't be able to return them. Dad was SO mad at me and grounded me. The next day was my first game and Granny and Big Daddy came to the game. I told BG how upset dad was and suggested maybe he talk to him so he wouldn't be so mad at me. That night when we got home Dad ungrounded me. I'm sure it was because of sweet BG helping me out. :)

I love you BG. Thank you for all the advice, hilarious phone calls, and love that you gave me throughout the years. I cherish every memory.

Love you Michael Sullivan

Every time I answered the phone when Mike was calling for Betty at work, he would say "May I speak with my lovely bride?" He was a sweet and humorous character. I send my condolences to you and your family Miss. Betty. Mike will be greatly missed.
