I was saddened to learn that my dear friend from Tampa, Justin, passed away just before he was to embark on a second career in competitive eating. Justin was an enthusiastic follower of the annual Nathan's hot dog eating contest in Atlantic City and the perennial winner, Joey Chestnut, was his hero. Justin had a bold vision of launching and competing in similar contests for other food items starting with tacos and burritos at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas to be followed by buffalo wings and deep dish Chicago pizza. His venture would also include televised one-on-one eating contests between professional football players and wrestlers patterned after the old home run derby contests. Justin loved to eat, perhaps too much, so competitive eating would have been a true labor of love for him.
