Mary Beth Griffith Berggren
Mary Beth Griffith Berggren, age 91, died on September 30th, in Columbus. Born in Easton, MD to William E. Griffith and Mary C. Griffith, she grew up in Chestertown, MD and Havertown, PA. She graduated from Friends' Central School, in Wynnewood, PA and later from Goucher College in Baltimore, MD where she was a three-sport athlete and a member of Pi Beta Phi. It was in Baltimore where she met Ronald B. Berggren, a student at Johns Hopkins University. They married in Merion, PA in 1954 when he was a medical student at the University of Pennsylvania. They moved to Upper Arlington in 1965 when he became Chief of Plastic Surgery at The Ohio State University. Once her children were grown, she devoted much of her time to The Columbus Museum of Art. She was President of Beaux Arts and the Women's Board, Decorator's Showhouse Chair, Coordinating Council Chair, and President of the Board of Trustees, serving as an Honorary Trustee at the time of her death. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Clark L. Murray of New Canaan, CT; son and daughter-in-law, Eric G. and Deborah L. Berggren of Chicago, IL, and her four grandchildren, Clark L. Murray, Jr. (Mary) of Charlottesville, VA, Allison G. Berggren of Chicago, IL, Caroline G. Murray of Stockholm, Sweden and John E. Berggren (Elizabeth) of Miami, FL. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Columbus Museum of Art, 480 East Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio.
