Peter Harrington Obituary

Peter Joseph Harrington
Peter Joseph Harrington, age 65, passed away on February 7, 2022. He was born in Brooklyn, New York on August 15, 1956 to William and Doris Harrington. Surrounded by his siblings John, Alice, and Ellen, Peter grew up golfing, caddying, playing softball, and playing with his dogs Happy and Fang. His love for dogs and animals never faltered as over the years he took care of Cassie, Mickey, Max, Coco, Chip, Gus, Lucy, and more, which meant lots of early mornings and routine snuggle time on the couch. Peter graduated from Fairfield Prep and went on to earn degrees in Economics from the University of Notre Dame. He used his sharp and clever mind both at work at People's United Bank and at play, participating in the best Dads' synchronized swimming routine ever, complete with an original song. Pete made each holiday so special for his family right up through his very last one. He set up the stockings; he baked the pies; and he loved with his whole heart. He always said: "Call me anytime, day or night, and I will be there for you," and he was. His dedication to his family was unrivaled. Peter also touched the lives of so many others with his goofiness, encouragement, positivity, and radiating smile. We celebrate his life and his love. He is survived by his wife, Pamela Shealy Harrington, his mother Doris Harrington, his son Matthew and husband Abe and daughter Lauren and her husband Kyle and his grandson, Sam, his sisters, Ellen Fanjoy and Alice Mastrony, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, William and his brother, John. We invite family, friends and anyone whose lives he touched to join us for a celebration of his life on February 14, 2022. Calling hours begin at 9:00 a.m., and mass begins at 10:00 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Riverside, Connecticut. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the SPCA of Connecticut.

I have been thinking about Peter quite often in recent days. I forgot until this reminder that he passed on around this time. In the past, when work became a little challenging, I was always able to check in with him. Now, I have to do that from a bit more of a distance, even though his voice is as clear as ever. Sending peace to family, friends and fellow co-workers. Leslie

Dear Pam and family- We were customers at Peoples Bank for over 30 years. From the day we met Pete we felt so taken care of. He was such a kind man. When our son was very sick in S America, he went above and beyond to help us get money to him before we flew there. Whenever we saw him, he always had a smile on his face and a lightness about him. When everything went digital, People's took a little while to catch up to other banks , but we were going nowhere because of Pete. He was the face of the bank and the reason people banked there. We are so sorry for this great loss and will miss him. Please accept our deepest condolences.

Dear Pam,
We send our heartfelt condolences to you. We have many happy memories of Pete, with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye, on many midnight adventures on -- and off-- stage. He even volunteered for several of our Red Cross operations. May he rest in peace, God's eternal light upon him.
Please extend our condolences to Alice, Ellen, and all the family.
Love, Kevin and Susan

p.s., sorry about the delay, it took a while for the word to reach Texas...

We knew Peter from the time we moved to Town, almost thirty years ago as he signed off on our mortgage. We will always remember Peter as a wonderful person and a joy to be with. We had a lot of laughs. Peace be with you my friend! A special person, for sure. Our love to all the Harrington´s.

My deepest sympathy to Peter's family. I knew Peter as a fellow Westport Rotarian. One of the nicest people, funny, smart, he will be sorely missed. We both came from Riverside. I believe I knew his sister, Alice, at SMGHS; a legend in the Debate Club! My heart and prayers go out to his family. Rest in Peace, Peter.

Just heard the terrible news. Peter and I were good friends and next door neighbors on Knoll St. We played countless innings of whiffle ball in the Winget's backyard in the dog days of summer. We outgrew the field and had to post outfielders on the other side of the fence. Great memories. Very sorry to hear of his passing.

I worked with Pete for over 10 years at the bank. He was a great person. He was funny, giving, and took great care of his customers. Everytime we had a potluck he would make his german potato salad just for me. He will truly be missed. My condolences to the family.

Peter was a smart energetic man who I came to know a bit at People's. He was a mentor for many of us who admired his quick wit and dedication to his clients. There are so few people who check off all the boxes. Peter was one of them. God bless him and his family at this time

Pam, Matt & Lauren, I am so very sorry for your loss! I wish I was nearer to give you all a big hug. Peter was a great friend! He always had a patient ear to listen to my ramblings without ever judging. I loved our time at Innis and the swim meets, but also all the following years at water polo, GHS swimming, Jr Golf, the travel trips, and so much more. He was also so helpful when talking to Bobby about his career. Peoples Bank was very lucky to have him! We were lucky to know and share many times with him. He will be sorely missed. I'm so happy he got to become a Grandpa! Blessings to you all and RIP Peter.
Love to you all, Cindy, Bob and family

As an introduction, I am pretty sure that this site has a word limit which will likely be a challenge for me as I attempt to express my respect. I send peace to his family, friends, fellow People's People and fans. May you remember him with a smile and a laugh. As some may know, Peter was my manager many years ago after which he became my "go to". He did his best to keep his family life separate from his work life and to that end, I only met Pam once at Summer Street. And though I rarely heard his kids names, I imagined him to be a pretty cool dad. He did have the opportunity to introduce me to [and I later worked with] his brother-in-law as a People's person. I have had a long career at the bank and have had one or two moments that required a level headed talk through. He was the one I went to in those times. Peter always gave me a reason to laugh, a reason to smile and also gave me great suggestions on how to solve any challenging customer scenario. When my dad died, he reminded me to put myself first. When I needed guidance, he was always there, always. Thankfully, my spirituality will carry me through this sadness. And, I believe that he is having a grand old time doing what he did best. I believe his many examples of kindness and laughter will be a gentle reminder to all who knew him that we really will be okay. I believe he would say to give eachother a hug or a firm handshake and then he'd give a supporting pat on the back. I know his genuine caring, though maybe sometimes not spoken, is evidence that, like Clarence from "It's A Wonderful Life", he sure did earn his wings in his short time here. Peter was a powerful force for good. I will always carry with me the lessons he helped me learn. I hope my words serve as some comfort to those he left behind. Have I told you everything I wanted you to know about Pete Harrington? Probably not and that is okay. Have I given you an example of how he gained my respect and admiration? Maybe. Have I let you know how much he is missed? I think so and finally, have I reminded you that Peter Harrington was a gift? I sure hope so. Again, I send peace especially to his immediate family, particularly his mom [about whom we had many a commiserating chat]. Take good care of yourselves. And Peter? So glad our paths crossed. Happy Golfing!
