Margaret PETERS Obituary

PETERS, Margaret Evelyn

At the breaking of a new day, April 1, 2022, our beloved

sister and aunt, Margaret Evelyn Peters, passed peacefully at the age of 86. She was born in Dayton to Joseph

Andrew and Mary Margaret (née Smith) Peters on March 12, 1936. Margaret was a quintessential educator who inspired her students to achieve, a noted historian and author, community activist and volunteer. A remarkable lady who generously shared her extraordinary knowledge and talents, Margaret was a staunch advocate for opening opportunities for all children; for equality, equity and justice; and for the betterment of our city. A faithful Christian, she was a third-generation, life-long, dedicated member of Zion Baptist Church, serving as Sunday school teacher and Superintendent for many years.

She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1954. At the University of Dayton, she earned a B.A. degree and a B.S.

degree. She also received her M.A. degree in 1972 and a

supervisor certificate from the University of Dayton in 1974. Margaret started her teaching career in the Dayton Public Schools. In 1968, she began serving as Black History Resource Teacher. She continued to campaign to make Black history a part of the curriculum after returning to the classroom. In 1995, African American History became part of the middle school curriculum. Upon retiring in 1993, she served as coordinator of the free after-school tutorial program at Zion Baptist Church. Margaret also taught at Sinclair Community College and Central State University.

Margaret is survived by her loving family, sister Rosemary Peters Brame; nephews Rick Peters, Kerry Andrew Brame and James Phillips; nieces Mary JoElyn Peters (Michael), Adrienne Robinson (Gregory), Karen Danielle Brame; and a host of grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Margaret will be very deeply missed by her family and countless others who knew and loved her. She is resting in well-deserved Heavenly peace. Her memorial service will be held, with Rev. Dr. Rockney Carter, Zion Baptist Church, officiating, on Saturday, May 7th, at

Shiloh Church, 5300 Philadelphia Drive, Dayton, Senior Pastor Jay D. McMillen. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to the start of service at 12:00. If unvaccinated, masks are required. Arrangements entrusted to THOMAS FUNERAL HOME, 4520 Salem Avenue. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to World Vision Tacoma, WA, or Children International Kansas City, MO, two of Margaret's favorite charities.

Dr. Margaret Peters' life and spiritual journey were outstanding examples of Christian scholarship, service and education. Her contributions to both the Dayton Community and the field of History will continue to strive as a tribute to a wonderful life.
