Robert McCaskill Obituary

Robert passed away at St. Francis Hospital on March 4, 2025. He was born in Duck Hill, Mississippi on November 10, 1935 to Gertrude and Pat McCaskill. His family moved to Memphis in 1940 where his father was an engineer on the City of New Orleans train. He attended A.B. Hill Elementary School, graduated from South Side High School and Memphis State. He was very proud of having grown up in South Memphis and remained close to many of his high school friends. He became a Professional engineer, started his own firm, which was very successful and worked there until his retirement in 2018. He was well known and respected in the construction and development community. He designed buildings for Kemmons Wilson, the founder of Holiday Inns, and Kemmons referred to him as the "worlds greatest engineer". In the 1980's he was involved with Henry Turley in the re-development of downtown and Beale Street. He structurally designed hundreds of hotels around the world as well as warehouse and office buildings. He loved riding his horses and was thrown over the heads of most of them. He was a proud member of Hernando Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School for 40 years. He was preceded in death by his daughter Lauren Scarborough and is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 70 years Ann Bailey McCaskill, a son Tim McCaskill (Teresa), four grandchildren Wendy Scarborough Remmers (Joe), Matthew Scarborough, Caitlin McCaskill Burke (Austin), Connor McCaskill (Charley) and seven great grandchildren. The funeral will be held Tuesday, March 11, 2025 at 2:00 pm at Forest Hill Cemetery East with visitation beginning at 1:00 pm. Robert was a father figure for me....his late daughter,Lauren(Laurie) was
my lifelong bff, until her unexpected passing in 2018.
We were bed-babies in LaBelle Haven Baptist church, and were baptized at same time.
Precious lifetime of memories
And always being there for each other, especially when we were widowed at young ages. I looked for to having sunday lunches at Robert and Anns house. Robert was always wise in his advice, amd a loving funny, and Godly man. I hope hes running the streets of gold with Laurie and Terry, and everyone else greeting him in heaven.
I love him,and his whole family
and will wholeheartedly miss him!! Love Marjie Szuhay Bennett

Bob was like a second father to me, and one of my best friends in all my life. I met him as a young architect, not very sure of myself, but he encouraged me and never made me feel like I didn't know what I was doing. He taught me how to play racquetball, and I'm convinced that he did so to laugh at me when I first started. He allowed me to start doing his structural drafting work him in CAD, which I did from 2006 to 2020 when he retired, and what a privilege it was to work closely with him and become even closer to him. That made me a better architect, and he would repeatedly tell me to quit "thinking like an architect" when I started thinking I could do some structural design on my own. He would tell me that I wasn't quiet ready to become a professional engineer just yet! He made be better; a better architect, a better man, a better husband, and father.......but isn't that what he did with anyone who really grew to know him well......he made them better! We talked about this day, and as we said to each other, " We will see each other again!"

Bob was my friend and confidant for many years. He was more than an excellent structural engineer to me for many buildings , but he was always there for confidential dialogue. I always respected his advice and wise counsel .
