As I was quick to join the war, and came back. I was quick to send my son, also. But, now I don't know if I would do it again. I thank you for your bravery. God still has a plan for you. I salute and wish I could give you this medal. Not forgotten

It is unbelievable how life has managed to continue after so many years...
I'm not sure anyone will ever know my years of painful non/stop tears.
14 years ago, 2 service members knocked loudly on our front door...
Pulling away from them, I did everything I could to avoid hearing that you, and the life that we knew, would not be anymore.
I failed at the start...as this strong woman you and the children needed me to be...
In 2004 I only fell to my knees, crying out...fighting what I was about to see.
Who could prepare me for the painful details of your tragic death that were brought to me?
Who could stop the desire to give up, the unwillingness to no longer be?
14 years ago I had to begin an unwilling relationship with resilience, that I fought time and time again....
I had to lay up with painful memories that always appear to have no end.
I had to get up from those memories and fight to live, day after day...
Resilience had to guide me and fight to show me that there was another way.
14 years ago, resilience had to parent for us in my tough season...
Resilience had to show our children that as painful as this was, there was a reason.
That reason is forever unknown, resilience!! I would whisper in its invisible ear...
Resilience would only reply,
That mystery, of not knowing luv, is a part of what protects and guides all of you, year after year.
It has been 14 years my sweet Jonathan...
Please know that we will not ever forget the great years that we had with you before that tragic day...and we are forever grateful for the men and women who help us to honor you, year after year...
...day after day. ❤

Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this week and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and hometown of Jonathan B. Shields US Army Sergeant.

We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families and friends and others who support our mission.

We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

In Memory of Jonathan ~ (Debra Estep)

November 20, 2008

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Jonathan, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

And may God bless every person who has taken the time to share a note with you on here Boo B. Loving you always. Your wifee, your broken better half..

It has been almost three years since your death and it has taken me this long to sign your guest book. I watched Jonathan grow up from a little boy into a man (he was my baby). He is truly missed. He never missed a chance to be helpful and I can remember a time that my apartment burned down. Jonathan came over with my family to help salvage what we could. As well as sift through rubble for important paperwork. That was just one of his kind acts. He spent so much time at my home and would walk in the cold to check on me from 58 East Lake to my home on Candler Road. Jonathan my baby you are always in my thoughts. Thank You for being the hero that you are!

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

My heart goes out to all of the soldiers that have lost their lives defending our freedom. My cousins and I knew Jonathan because we all took JROTC together at Decatur High School. Jonathan was a truly genuine person. I was not shocked to hear that he joined the military, but I was extremely saddened to hear of his passing. To the family that he leaves behind, know that weeping may endure for a night but joy will come in the morning. I pray that you all will receive comfort and peace to continue on like he would have wanted. GOD Bless!!

I know Jonathan only through Deanne's memories. What a remarkable man! He had a the heart of a hero, the integrity of a man of God. Because of the sacrifices that Jonathan and others like him have made, the rest of us can live in peace and freedom. How can I say thanks for that kind of sacrifice? And yet, for lack of anything better to say, I say, "Thank you, Jonathan. You are appreciated, and you are missed."

Another month baby and because God made you my Guardian Angel, and for that reason only, I can look up and say, wow, I made it through another month...I would say of all of my grieving time, these last 5 months were the craziest...I wonder what the grieving counselors would call the wild and crazy stage I just went through...doesn't matter really, because losing you made me realize many things, but most of all, what you kept trying to drill into my head time and time again "Who cares what others think...just live and keep living, until God says different"...looks like I may really be getting that with this new stage that's coming on...here we go, another stage, another journey...just keep standing by me love, it always helps to look up and hear your words whispered into thin air "it's okay baby"...I know you must say it so much because you're the one who really gets to witness ALL of the ups and ALL of the downs...keep holdin' me...Loving you forever...your wifee.

Cece Winans sings 'You're more than what I wanted....the miracle I needed so bad...everything I never had.' So often I sing those lyrics to God, to whom All praises are due, and many times I just look at your 4' tall photo hanging over my bed and cry and sing them directly to you. You are forever missed, and as your 2 year mark arrives in a few short days I pray all who love you will join us on that special day by releasing red, your favorite color, balloons into the air for the blood you shed for our freedom! Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

Beginning with the phrase " I cannot described the words to say" how much I miss you sounds cliche', but as God and YOU as my witness you know that phrase come true from my heart. Since I cannot find any one particular word to best describe you, I will simply use a pronoun and a verb, "He Is".

I Love You Man!

My heart goes out to the family. I didn't know Sgt. Shields, but someone sent your loved ones name through an email entitled "Fallen Heros." Something told my heart to come to this page and let the family know that Sgt. Jonathan B. Shields will forever live in your hearts, but he is now doing work for the Lord. Rest assure, if you live your life according to Gods plan... you will see him again!

God Bless

I have just learned of the death of Sgt. Jonathan B. Shields. As the State Chaplain of the Georgia Sons Of The American Revolution and speaking for our President, George Thurmond and more than 1,400 SAR members around the State of Georgia, may I most humbly express the condolences of a grateful Society. Sgt. Shields, wrapped in the integrity of service to our nation and the inestimable values of duty, honor and country, stood on a wall of freedom for us all. His life and his love of country epitomized every attribute of patriotism the Sons Of The American Revolution hold dear. And, as Americans, we could never repay the debt we owe him ..!! Nor the debt we owe you… his family!!!

FOR THE CHRISTIAN SOLDIER

(A tribute to the fallen who die to keep us free - and in tribute to their families)

Tune: "500 Miles" by Peter, Paul, and Mary

THE LAST RIDE HOME

When you meet the plane I'm on

You will know that I am gone!

Your pain too great to face the dawn

To say good-bye!

Flags as far as you can see

My hometown comes to welcome me.

Make my grave where folks are free -

I'm coming home!

As the plane leaves the ground

My earthly ears won't hear a sound.

Recall the peace that I have found

To go on Home!

I know the Lord, to Him I cling

I say, "Oh death, where is thy sting?"

I feel the brush of angel wings

- Coming for me!

Lord, I think I'm nearly through!

Just eager now to come to You!

Heaven's there beyond the blue,

I'm going Home!

God's own Son was far from Home

He died to bear my sin alone.

Was buried in that tomb of stone

- But He's alive!

When you meet the plane I'm on

You will know that I am gone -

One day you'll share the joy I've found

It won't be long!

I will never forget that Halloween Sunday 2004. The true joy and loving smiles illuminated the room as the family took turns talking to Jonathan on the phone. Only God knew that would be the last time we could talk to him. I thank God for allowing me to be a part of that special occassion. I love you and I shall continue to pray for your strength.

To the family of Sgt.Sheilds,

I'm very sorry for your loss. I just found out when i arrived home for leave. I was with stationed with Jon for our first 3 years in the army together. We went to basic together, and wound up in 3-8 together. He was my loader, my first gunnery as gunner. Im so sorry. Jon was one of a kind, LOL. I am presently still in Iraq, but if you need anything, please just let me know.

I am writing because I saw Jonathan's story on the AJC. My heart breaks everytime I see that we have lost another soldier for the fight for freedom. I thank you so much for having and nuturing such a wonderful human in this world. I am sad that Jonathan could not have continued to share with us the wisdom that made him so wise at such a young age. God bless you and your family, God bless Jonathan, and all those who fight for our freedom even though they cannot live to know the impact it has on the rest of our lives. These men and women are my heroes! I lost my mother and my father when I was a young girl. Next year, my only brother will be serving one year in Afghanistan for the Army. I pray that he will make it home safely. I try and remember...that "God always gathers the most beautiful flowers for his bouquet". God must have known what a great angel Jonathan would make. All my love-your friend from the Northwest-Kiara

As a former member of the 1st Cavalry Division, may I offer my deepest condolences to those who loved Jonathan Shields, a true American hero and patriot. Know that other Americans share in your loss and are concerned.

It is my prayer that God may grant y'all an extra measure of peace, comfort, and strength during this difficult time.

May Jonathan's legacy of bravery and devotion to our country and its safety be a source of pride and forever remembered by a grateful nation. His sacrifice is not unlike those Georgians of times past who gave their all for freedom in such places as Sharpsburg, Ardenne Forest, Bastogne, Inchon, and the Ia Drang Valley.

Sincerely, with deepest sympathy,

Dr. Arnold M. Huskins
