I don't think I can go another year without posting a few words here to express how fortunate I feel to have grown up in West Hartford with one of the most remarkable people I have ever known. We played soccer together, right on through high school, but it was his encouragement to become one the chieftains that offered the most challenge. He had to approach me a few times, before I finally gave in. Perhaps I didn't want him to know how easy a sell it was, but my plate was always full back then. I've only grown to appreciate those days more, as the years pass by. I found it difficult to understand back then, how someone could surrender themselves to military service. But as I accepted a position as a correctional officer in '96, having now worked with many who served in the armed forces, my esteem for Mike has grown all the more. And as a yogi, I know his spirit soars. Blessings.

LTC McMahon,
You are truly missed. I'll never forget the days we had. You were more than my "SCO", you were everything that anyone could ever want in a leader. You put a smile on my face everyday knowing that you were my Commander and that you were going to take care of me and my soldiers. You led from the front and there was no doubt that you would have been right beside me and fighting with me, if needed. Years have passed, but yet, you are still my "SCO". Thanks for everything that you ever did for me.

I worked for Michael McMahon back when he was a Major at Fort Hood Texas.
He treated everyone with much respect and encouraged others to do well and enjoy their day no matter what burden they carried. He is missed.

I don't know personally any of you but when participating few weeks ago to a golf outing to raise money for the 'Children of Michael McMahon College Fund", I was sitting by a picture of Michael and fell so much for him and his family. Son of a pilot in the French Air Force myself, I grew up in military bases. I do realize the sacrifices made by all men and women in the military, and their family.. I wanted here to thank Mike, and Jeanette, and Mike Jr. and Thomas and Ricky for the sacred gift..
From my heart.

I was with Mike in Afghanistan during his last few days serving in an Engineer Battalion building roads for the Afghan people. Mike's unit was our security force and I went on several community outreach missions with him. I was always amazed at how he could easily relate to people and how fond the locals were of him. Although there was a language barrier, Mike always seemed to get his point across and made friends with the local officials. I believe in his heart he was trying his best for the Afghan people and his soldiers in the 3/4 Cav. I learned alot from Mike for the 6 or so months I spent around him, lessons in leaderhip, honor and optimism. I think of him often and the good he did in his tenure there.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Michael, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I remember Mike well as a boy, he was a great kid. I heard of his passing in the news, but did not think to send a message this way until now. Even though I moved away from the neighborhood a long time ago, I still hold those memories strongly as the way things should always be for kids growing up. He will always be in that place for me. Best wishes, Mark

I saw Michael's picture in a recent copy of MILITARY REVIEW. Since then it has often been on my mind.
It is always an inspiration reading how some people can keep up the good fight, even in the most difficult circumstances. The Army is facing a most complex situation in Afghanistan. It will prevail there because of good men like Michael who can find and make friends while they fight off the bad element. I would love to learn more about what Michael accomplished in Afghanistan, both for my own benefit, and to pass the story on to others.
While it is a great loss to lose a man such as Michael, it is great gift to mankind that we had him as long as we did. What a wonderful world it would be if everyone followed his lead.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

We first met as second graders at Bridlepath School in West Hartford. We went on together to Sedgwick and then Conard H.S. Our families were parishioners at St. Helena , consequently we were always involved with those activities. We mourned with him when his brother was killed, now we mourn as our friend Michael is laid to rest with him at West Point.
We are proud of you, Michael. Good and faithful servant.
