John R. McMahon Jr.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. John Raymond McMahon, Jr. on February 11, 2026, at the age of 83. John was affectionately known as "Mac" to family and "Duke" to many.

He was a decorated veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He served from 1968 to 1974. He was an auto mechanic with the 1st Infantry, served on night patrol, was a platoon sergeant, and trained in front-line artillery and charge. His military awards included two service stripes, four OS bars, VSM, NDSM, RVNCM, two Bronze Stars, a Purple Heart, a Gold Medal, AFEM, and ARCOM.

John was a letter carrier for the USPS, retiring after 35 years. Never one to sit still, John then drove a school bus for 23 years with Sylvania Public Schools. He was loved by the many children who rode with him to and from school and on the many field trips.

Cruising with Karen, scuba diving, golfing, and bowling were among his many hobbies. He also enjoyed riding his motorcycle and tinkering in the garage.

John will be dearly missed by his surviving family: daughters, Lana Haverkamp (Doug) and Kathy Boerst; grandchildren, Justin Mayo, Megan Carros, Abby Lusher, and Brooke Lusher; and great-grandchildren, Cameron George, Caleb Carros, and Meilani Lusher; and special family friend, Richard Glanzman. He was preceded in death by his wife of 36 years, Karen McMahon; his mother, Ruth McMahon; his father, John McMahon; and his brother, Ed McMahon.

Services will be held on Friday, February 13, 2026, at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 West Sylvania Avenue, Toledo, Ohio. Visitation will take place from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with the funeral service to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
