Darren served under me in the 308th third platoon. I was his platoon sergeant. I remember him every year and visit his final resting place. It saddens me to this day to have lost such a great American Hero. I recall his insistant thirst for knowledge and proficientcy. His lust to be the best. I gave him everything I knew. He proved to be the better man. I love him to this day as a brother, friend, and comrade. He gave his life to save others. This is the man I remember; Selfless, Dedicated, Honorable, Thoughtful, and compassionate. He is my hero. God Bless him, and his family. No greater pleasure have I, than to have served with a man like him.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Darren, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

To the Howe Family, I've known Judy, Brandon, and Darren for most of my life. There's not much to say about him except he was a great father a great brother and a great friend. He was a loving person and cared not only for himself but for everyone else also. He put other people first and loved all. He had bad times and Good times but we all do. Unfortantley he died but he did it prtecting our country, sure he got medals for bravery and for saving 13 14 men but that don't matter to the ones that loves him becuase he is gone and life form. but with all respect to the soldiers he saved god bless you. His kids has to go through life growing up without there dad being there for there first day of school to the day they graduate but to his family and friends remember hes in all of our hearts and memories and he will always be looking after all of us

Howe Family,
We want you to know that we are thinking of you and continue to pray not only for your son but for all of you. We know exactly what you are going through for we lost our son the day before your sons passing. Our son Spc. Dennis Ferderer was also from Fort Benning, GA and therefore knew your son over in Iraq. They are very special young men and they will always be hero's. We must really be proud of our sons, husband and dad for what they gave to us and that is the chance to continue on living. Right now I know it feels like it can't ever happen but I hope and pray that we can move on together for that is what they wanted for us. Right now with the holiday season upon us I feel as if a part of my life is having trouble moving on but I know it has to for all the people that our son loved and for their love for him.
Know that our sons, husband, dad are hero's in our hearts and the hearts of many, therefore they will live on forever. Although we don't know each other but have had the same tragedies in our lives perhaps we can find comfort in communicating and helping each other.
I don't know if you went to the memorial at Ft. Benning, for we weren't able to go, but our sons service was held the same day. We had some of his friends from Ga. attend and they were able to send us a program of the service. If you were not able to get this let your greivence officer know and perhaps he can get you one and if not let me know and I'll see if I can get one for you from some friends.
May God hold you and bless you at this time -we will be praying for you.

I'm sorry for your loss. Spc Darren Howe was a very good soldier. I served with him in the 308th Transportation Company in Lincoln, he was always asking me questions about my time on active duty and the things I've done in my military carrier, and he has always shown his enthusiasm for the military everytime I saw him during our drill weekends. It's very sad that we have to lose soldiers like Darren in any kinds of situations, I can not say that I could feel the same loss that the family would feel, but I can say it can also be very hard on soldiers to lose someone in their unit and I have gone thru that situation. I give my condolences to the Family of Darren Howe.
