Ryan Sorensen Obituary

Marine from Boca killed in Iraq battle Ryan J. Sorensen died Sunday fighting insurgents. He always wanted to serve, his father says.

A 26-year-old Marine from Boca Raton was killed during an assault against Al-Qaeda-led insurgents in an Iraqi border town near Syria, the Department of Defense said Tuesday.

Lance Cpl. Ryan J. Sorensen died Sunday from enemy small-arms fire during fighting in Husaybah, a market town along the Euphrates River about 200 miles northwest of Baghdad, according to the Marine Corps public affairs office.

He is the 10th Iraq casualty from Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast.

"Ryan wanted to be an officer but wanted to do some tours as an enlisted infantryman first," said Sorensen's father Jim, who returned to Boca Raton from Virginia after the family was informed of his son's death. The elder Sorensen had open heart surgery two weeks ago.

"He told me, 'I can't lead people in that environment unless I've been in that environment,' which I think is highly respectable," Jim Sorensen said.

Though Sorensen always wanted to be a Marine, his joining the corps surprised his family, his father said. Sorensen was known as a "motorhead" who constantly tinkered on a red 1992 Camaro. Before joining the Marines, he studied at the Wyoming Technical Institute in Laramie, where he learned to build race cars and was later certified as a mechanic. When he returned to Boca Raton, Sorensen worked at Firestone.

"He learned early on he was good with his hands," his father said. "Building race cars was something he could do for himself, by himself that had a tangible result."

In his spare time, Ryan Sorensen surfed and built his own surfboard.

He was known as a tough guy at home, someone who "could not be beaten," his father said. When he was 2 or 3 years old, Ryan grabbed two barn kittens by their tails from a neighbor's farm in Wisconsin and showed them to his parents as the kittens kept scratching his arms and face.

"Ryan was happy as heck he was able to catch them," he said.

The Marine also loved Christmas, said his mother, Rebecca. "You have to decorate for Christmas (even though) I won't be home," he told her.

Sorensen was assigned to Marine combat units working with 1,000 Iraqi troops, who initiated the assault code named "Operation Steel Curtain" on Saturday. He led a three-man team in Husaybah. The two Marines with him were seriously wounded in the assault.

U.S. officials say Husaybah is an Al-Qaeda stronghold and entry point for foreign fighters and weapons coming into the country from Syria. The town was once home to about 30,000 people.

A CNN reporter traveling with the troops there said ground forces were fighting house to house, working through the narrow streets with Humvees and tanks. U.S. military officials said they were meeting tough resistance, but plan to control the town long-term. Officials said Tuesday that the town is secure.

The military hopes the Husaybah operation will help restore sufficient security in the area to enable the Sunni Arab population to participate in the Dec. 15 parliamentary elections.

The U.S.-led assault is also seen as a test of the fledgling Iraqi army's capability to battle insurgents.

Sorensen was born on Aug. 9, 1979 in Racine, Wis. He graduated from Boca Raton High School in 1998. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his older sister, Marie Keyte, of Hernando.

Funeral arrangements are pending, the family said.

I cannot believe that 10 years has passed since you were killed, it is strange because it feels like you have missed so much and at the same time it feels like just yesterday.

I wish that you could have lived to meet your nephews, I think you guys would have been good friends, and I wish you would have lived longer and had children of your own and that you would have made my an aunt.

I am very proud of you little brother and take solace in the fact that at least you died too young doing something that made a difference in the world and that you truly believed in.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Ryan, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I knew Ryan, as a member of his platoon... I know this is a VERY long time coming, but God Bless you and Him. While he was not a VERY close friend I will remember him always with his "abbbottt"(goat impression) and with his constant harasment (i mean this in fond memory) he was a friend. While many 3rd Platoon india families have (as well as MANY others) wish you the best of tidings. His memoery in Our eyes will ALWAYS be remebered. Many might not admit it, but when we got the DVD in PB Tarawa of the news clipings of Operations Iron Fist and Operations Steel Curtain, and with the video memories of Sorensen, we laughed at was funny, by tears did fall when we remembered him. And PLEASE BE ASSURED his memory has NOT been forgotten by those who were there/will never be forgottened, and we DO (AS ALWAYS) carry on his memory. God Bless you and Him, into this year and beyond.

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised LE RON A. WILSON (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

The Sorenson Family,

My deepest condolensces go out to your family. I will carry my memories of the times I shared with Ryan for as long as I am able to honor his memory. I will never forget the day that I stopped by the house to find out that Ryan joined the Marine Corps. I hold great pride in the Esprit de Corps that we silently shared that day. To see him hold his head high and walk only the way a Marine can made me so proud of him. If there is EVER anything I can do please do not hesitate to contact me. I would give anything to go back in time and put my dress blues on and honor his memory at his memorial service at PBCC.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Sorenson,
Today, as in many cities across the country, we aknowledged the fourth anniversary of the Iraq war. Here in Eureka, Ca. we dicided to make today's event a somber vigil, not a march or rally. The idea was to honor the lives lost. Each participant wore a cardboard sign with the name of a soldier, his/her age and military position. The name I chose at random happened to be Ryan J. Sorenson. For the two hours during the vigil, I wore his name, and wondered who this man was, so young to be taken from this earth. I thought about what I was doing at 26, and all the life experiences I have enjoyed since that time. It brought tears to my eyes, though I never had the priveledge to meet Ryan. My nephew Camello, is just 23 and in Iraq now, for his second tour. Many people in their cars read our signs at stoplights, and their faces grew very serious. There have been well over 3000 American casualties now, so the long lines of participants went on for blocks and blocks. Each one wore a sign with the name and age of a fallen American soldier. Under Ryan's name, I had written "Was this your son"? So drivers would stop and realize, it COULD be their son. We also honored the Iraqi dead, although there is no way to begin to count those. I pray for your family's comfort and wish you all God's blessings. May we all see an end to this senseless war very soon.

Sincerely,
Mashaw McGuinnis

Dear Sorensen Family,

My father, also a US Marine, is buried at Florida National Cememtery. When I go visit I always go by Section 402 where Ryan is buried.

I go by there to thank God for the freedom we have due to the ultimate sacrifice of the soldiers that are buried there. I pray for the families because of the tremendous loss and void you must feel and hope that you are as proud of your son as I am that he served his country.

I know words can't do much but its all we have to work with...and I hope and pray your pain turns to pride and I thank you and your son for his work protecting freedom across the globe.

Dear Family,Friends, and Loved Ones,

Nothing grieves my heart like the loss of a fellow Marine. I served during the Vietnam War,1967-1973. I was assigned to 2/7,1stMarDiv,FMF,Westpac Ground Forces, from May 1968-December l969.

I lost a lot of close friends and some very brave companions during my tour in Nam. We came back home to boos and eventually ended up using booze, or something stronger to kill the pain. Not necessarily the pain of war, but the misery of peace. We had no parades, no streamers or yellow ribbons, like Desert Storm. We definitely weren't welcomed as heroes.

When the Gulf War started my son was in boot camp at PI.

My wife just knew he's never see action in southwest Asia. He departed on his first tour in July of 2004. March 13, 2005 his unit returned stateside to Camp Lejeune. From there they went to Twenty Nine Stumps for desert training. Marine Corps logic can be elusive at times.

On July 19, 2005 he headed back to Iraq for his second tour. On Oct 1, I received a phone call from him and we talked for about 15 minutes. For the two of us it was an unusually long call. We usually spent five minutes max talking and then bade each other, love and good luck. The phone call ended with me telling him I loved him, and he returned the same feelings.

On Oct. 6, my son and another Marine with him were killed by a roadside bomb in Qaim, Iraq. On a bright sunny day, Monday October 17, we laid our son to rest beneath the soil of his "Sweet Home Alabama". Life as we knew it came to an abrupt halt. Our lives will never return to any sort of normalcy.

There are no words I could say, sufficient enough to console you or alleviate the heavy burden of grief you now feel. I also wish I could tell you time will allow the hurt to subside, that would be the greatest I've lie ever told.

The best thing I can say is this; "Rejoice not in the sacrifice on the field of battle. Regale him not for the gallantry he displayed. Rather remember those moments of kindness and tenderness which he shared with the ones he loved. Never surrender his good character to the evils of death.Hold high the banner of concern which flew so strong in his heart. Do not let his loss give glory to despondency and doom.

No hold your heads high and carry on the battle he had begun. Never let the flame he kindled grow dim. Keep it burning brightly in rememberance of one of Heavens Newest Guardians.

Rest assured that God himself inspects the guard daily and His chest swells with pride, because He has chosen United States Marines to guard His heavenly kingdom.

I salute you by brother, Semper Fi, and Gung Ho! Sgt Carl L. Raines, Sr.USMC, 1967-1973.R-I-P, Marine.

To the Sorensen Family:

I am very sorry for the loss of your wonderful son Ryan. Ryan touched the lives of everyone who has ever had the chance to know him. Not only was Ryan a great friend, brother, and a wonderful son; but he was also an outstanding Marine who gave his life for all of us to have the freedom's we endure everyday. An author by the name of Albert Pine was stated "What we do for ourselves dies with us. What we do for others and the world remains and is immortal." I beleive in my heart that Ryan lived his life like this. Ryan is and will always remain an American Hero. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. God bless.

Dear Jim, Rebecca, Marie & family,

Not only are we unable to imagine what God has prepared for us (according to Corinthians) but could you have imagined the outpouring this sad event would evoke:

words meant to comfort, love meant to sustain, deeds meant to comfort and lift up, eyes and expressions that mirror the depth of your grief and the height of your pride. Surely God’s loving arms are wrapped tightly around you.

May peace be with you as we remember Ryan.

Dear Sorensen Family,

Even though I did not know Ryan personally, I can only imagine your sense of loss since I have two sons. Ryan's selfless devotion to what he believed in is the type of courage on which this country was founded. May God be with you in this difficult time. You are all in my prayers.

Dear Mr. & Mrs. Sorensen,

Please accept my deepest condolence over the loss of your son. As the former principal of Boca Raton High School (83-86), I feel a connection to Ryan. I do unerstand your son's pride in America and his recognition that "Freedom Is Not Free." My deceased father is a veteran of both WWII and Korea and several of my family members are veterans. My nephew is now on his third tour of duty in Iraq.

However, I cannot begin to understand your personal loss, although I have lost many students during my 25 year tenure as a high school principal. I heard you speak on television and was moved by your love for your son and support for his convictions. I can only wish that you and your family find peace in the days to com.

With deepest regards,

Art Johnson, Ph.D.

My deepest Sympathy goes out to each and every member of your family.

My Ex-Husband was a soldier for 28 years, and everyday of duty I dreaded the day that I would have to face this moment. I could never begin to tell you how my heart poors out to you on this day. Your life feels like it's coming to an end. Always remember the good things and place that flag on your front porch. His memory will always live on. The flag is what all soldiers die for. Freedom. May he rest in peace.

Dear Sorensen family:

Although I do not know you personally, as I was reading Ryan's guest book, I noted that my nephew made a comment to you as he knew Ryan in HS. Also, my former student, Tom Hannigan is presently in the Marines and his dad wrote you a comment. As a teacher, aunt, and parent, my heart goes out to you. I have always lived my life by putting myself in someone else's shoes. Your grief is my grief too. And I know the young men and women serving in our military are sincere when they say they are serving to protect their family and the families of others in America!

God Bless You....Sincerely: Mrs. Donney

You are forever in my thoughts.
