Leon's Dad and brother-in-law Jeff and other buddies just finished a fantastic (and difficult) chimney-rebuild project for us in Columbia. They were proudly wearing Leon's name, and honored to tell the story of his life. A man to be remembered, and of course deeply missed.

So hard to lose one so young! But life goes on, and those who knew him carry on a tradition of careful and caring craftsmanship with a respectful sense of connectedness with those not with us in the flesh.

May God's Spirit be with, and heal, all of us.

Gratefully,

Dear Mr. And Mrs. Deraps,
This is a great site. I love to read all the things I didn't know about Deraps. Deraps was under my charge during his tour in Iraq, he was one of about 40. Usually the platoon Sergeant gets to know his Marines at a level of mission employment and the basics of their personal life. It was different with Deraps, I many of times came to his room where he hung out with Stewie, Quintero and his other friends. I susually came to see their pictures and talk to them on how they felt, and do the usual Marine B.S. session. Deraps was always so positive about everything and very poud of his family. Although we have never met in person, I was able to meet you thru him. I also got to know more about beef jerky than I really needed to know from him. He was a great Marine, man and person. I will never forget him and what his sacrifice stands for. Alot of Marines get awards for things they do which people thinks makes them heroes. Leon is the real Hero, he is one of my Heroes. He will always be remembered in my family and kept in our hearts! God bless you and your family.

Dear Leon,

In your eyes, I see the grace of a young man and a compassionate soul. As a Marine, I know you are brave. But what I see is a gentle soul, someone who retained his humanity during an inhumane time, and this is what we shall miss about you. May your sacrifice give us the strength to find alternatives to war, to killing and to death. Your courage, grace and compassion are in us always.

May your memory be a comfort to your mom, dad and family. And may your memory be a blessing, always.

Even though I did not Leon personally I can remember him working at the store in town. He came to work there after my son had left to serve his country as a fellow Marine. I have felt a bond to Leon since the day I found out about his death. I guess that comes from being a "Marine Mom" and knowing that there are more Mom's with sons and daugthers serving their country. Dearest Sandy, Dale and family,
My heart and prayers are with you all. It has been years since we've talked or seen one another. During that time, in many moments, I have thanked the Lord for the Holy Spirit operating through you and your family that reached out and touched me and my family!
Sandy, my eyes have not dried since I heard from Bruce of Leon's sacrifice and your family's loss! As a mother I stand with you in the battle with grief. I love you and I thank God for His grace and mercy in your life through all of us who love you and hold you up in His loving hands!
Dale, God Bless you and continue to give you the strength and loving heart to lead your family and comfort Sandy as Him. To all the Deraps children who we came to know during our time of "recovery" for Bruce from cancer, I send you strength and love in His name!
Dale and Sandy, I just informed Daniel, who was at work, of Leon's passing and he broke down and we both cried for the loss of Leon. We know that he lives on in all the lives he touched, many of whom have expressed that in the pages of this book!
Thank you, Deraps family, for modeling family love, sharing and giving of yourselves to us and so many others and instilling in your children such values!!
You have always had a place of gratitude and love in my heart and I pray and declare the Peace that surpasses understanding in the precious name of Jesus be with you in every moment that threatens to overwhelm with sadness for He is good and his Love endureth forever in and through you all for one another and Leon!
Thank you for all you've given and all you do to be Lights in this world and the gifts you gave to each member of my family in our time of need!!
With deepest sympathy and love,

Dear Deraps family -
I will always have a special place in my heart for your family. Your love and kindness are overwhelming. I lost touch for a few years and so I did not get to see Leon growing up. The memories I have of him are a little 4 or 5 year old boy running around smiling and playing. I always enjoyed seeing and playing with him when I came by your home. I imagine he is now guarding the streets of heaven for those who have gone before us and is watching down on those of us still here. Words can never take away the pain we feel of a lost loved one but I am always here if you need someone to talk to.
Your friend.

Leon,
I remember you coming into this world several months after your dad was laid up with a broken leg. I still have a fond memory of your older brothers and sisters looking out after you and dragging you around by your hand. I still remember the hand me down tennis shoes that you wore that were two sizes to big. Even though I grieve for you, I grieve most for those loved ones that grieve for you. Thank you for your ultimate sacrifice.

Leon,
Today you would be 21 years old. You are missed so much. Someone gave mom and papa enough tickets for everyone in the family to go to a St. Louis Blues hocky game, just to be together on this day. I'm here in Nebraska and I miss you and everyone terribly. You are my hero little brother. I know you are celebrating your birthday with the Lord and so many loved ones. I love you Leon. Love always, Regina
You will never be forgotton.

Last night, at a local fundraiser for our Mid-Missouri Salute Our Veterans' Airshow, I had the privilege of sitting at the same table with Leon's sister, Dawn, and brother-in-law, Terry. I am so grateful for the sacrifice that Leon and his entire family have made. We still have Leon's picture sitting on our mantle. It was an honor to meet Dawn and Terry. They are amazing people.

My deepest sympathies to the entire family. I of course did not know Leon, but am a Vietnam Veteran of the Corps. As I was scanning the numbers of killed saying prayers, The date of Leon's death caught my eye, it is my birth date. I will from now on remember Leon on that day.
Mr. Deraps as a Corps vet yourself you know we are all brothers. I know when I get to heaven I will see Leon, give a salute, and can say Well done Marine.
May the peace of God be with you all.

Just when you think there is so little hope in the world, you find a family so loving and caring that everything you thought or knew changed in an instant. I have to catch myself from getting angry, I did not grow up with a family and a community like the Deraps, I wish I had. I never knew Corporal Leon Deraps, I wish I had, but not only would I have liked to have met him but his family and friends also. My wife and I recently went to San Diego to watch our neighbors two sons Tony and Nathan graduate from MCRD August 24th, 2007. While watching the graduation a Gunnery Sergeant made a comment over the PA about the recruits, he said "Thank you parents and family members for instilling in these men the values we hold so dear, without your love and dedication in their up bringing they would not be the men they are today". I believe that. I would like to say to both Sandy and Dale, God bless you, like your son, you are amazing! My wife and I have read everything on this web site and our eyes have filled with tears so many times. God bless you and your family and friends and the wonderful people in your community. My wife and I will always say a prayer for you and Leon.

Dear Sandy, Dale and the whole Deraps Family,

I think of you all everyday I keep you all in daily prayers as does the whole Specht Family. Joe and I had the opportunity to be with Leon and enjoy his wonderful personality on a couple of occassions. I wear my USMC T-shirt every time I work out at the Gym and I am constantly amazed at the support of so many wonderful people who unfortunately have lost their loved ones in this war as well. I am in awe over the outpoor of love, well wishes and blessings that so many give. I love you all with my whole heart!!! I feel very blessed each day to know I have such a wonderful family and Leon will always be a part of that. I know he is watching over all of you and all of us too. Be good to each other everyday and know that you are blessed to have each other and your Specht family here in New Jersey. I love you all!

I still think of Leon and all of you quite often. I pray now for all of you and Craig and his family as he departs for Iraq. I know that Leon will be watching over him.
