Dang Brother it never gets any easier. I had packed away all my Army stuff and am in the process of moving and Lo and behold I came across Ft Lewis awards and certificates and what do I find? That picture of You, Spc. Voorhies, Sgt Toney, and myself at the drinking establishment down on the water in Seattle after I got back from JTF- Bravo Honduras. Damn we looked GOOD!! We had the world in front of us and were gonna do great and wonderful things in the Army and the civilian world. You my Brother are always in thoughts, I often tell my daughter and son about you and what sacrifice you made for them, me and all Americans to this day. Captain English I have one regret and that is I never got to render that Salute to you that you earned and deserved from this crusty old NCO. So I stand now in my Dress Greens , all awards and decarations and SALUTE you SIR! " TOUJOUR PRET" "ALWAYS READY" Keep Everyone straight up there Captn English we miss you much down here. Brother, I still remember the that day in Iraq. The next couple of days hurt so much, trying to work and knowing that you were gone. You were a awesome man, we thought so much of you. I miss you and still think of you so much at this time of year. I have never been able to go visit your spouse and children, it is just to much to bear. The pain inside is still pretty raw. I finally retired and settled down in Washington State. My daughters have grown up and have children of their own. I wished a full life for you to my friend. This always pulls me apart on the inside.. I pray for your family brother.. I met up with one of the guys on your team, he was stationed with me here at JBLM and he eventually married one of my female friends. I will never forget you..

They were panning the field and then stopped on one memorial and it was Shawn's. They stayed on it for several seconds. I had been thinking of all of you at church yesterday and this was so unreal. It has taken me years to accept this reality and even today as I write this I am sadden and stun. To think that a strong, loving, caring, humorous, intelligent and well liked soul has been promoted so high in ranks, God loves and loved him. Please know that I was Shawn first permanment duty station squad leader, Platoon Sgt. When I found out that he play baseball, I quickly thought him the game of softball and we played together from 1991 through the time he was discharged and went back to school, only to see him again in 1997/98 issuing him gear for his ROTC training at Ft.Lewis CIF. We huged, chatted and shared wonderful memories and I will have all those memories to hold and capture in my mind. He was a buck private first class when we first met, but he excel through the ranks because of hard work ethics, commitment and dedication to his family and country. He was a proud man, a little hot headed sometimes but thats what made him unique and very special to me and many others. When I first heard about his tradegy, I refused to beleive it because of who he is and was. I stayed away from searching because I didnt want to know but deep inside the Lord had already given me the answer. we had some good times and the pictures I will look at and enjoy our memories we created. To his loving family, I have never met. The names of your children speaks volume of the type of man you married Trish. The names Nathan, Noah and Austin, how beautiful and powerful names to bear. Yes, he will always be remembered, as many others that I found to be at rest that I once had the honor and privilege to have met and to have served our country. God bless all who currently in the Armed forces. He is our Rock and our Shelter.

Not a day goes by that I don't remember Shawn, or how I was involved. Ironically, when I deployed to Iraq on a MiTT team (advisor group) in 2007, I worked with Iraqi officers and interpreters who worked with Shawn, and were with him when he died. They loved him, and shared wonderful stories about his passion, his professionalism, and his kind nature. He was loved by everyone who worked with him. On FOB Al Rasheed, the MiTT building was named in his honor, and I could barely keep my emotions in check when I saw the memorial sign. I am so, so very sorry. My prayers are with you every single day.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Words alone cannot express our heartfelt thanks and gratitude we have for you Shawn and your family. Your unselfish love for your country and the lives of others has placed a impressive mark on our hearts.
We have a small flag with your name on it given to us by First Baptist of Orlando in honor of Memorial Day Ceremonies of 2007. We took it along with two other fallen soldiers and with the crowd walked out to a large field and placed it along side thousands of others. We know your in the arms of Jesus, but prayed for your family and loved ones.

We went back to retrieve your colors and the other two. On this Memorial Day of 2008, I placed your picture with your colors to diplay each Memorial Day to come.

Today we prayed for you family and loved ones and thanked God for you. Placed it outside for everyone to see in your honor as we will continue to make it a tradition for Memorial Days to come.
You will not be forgotten.

Brother I knew you when you were coming up thru the E side of the house at Ft Lewis A Co 199th Infantry. We became good friends right when I got there from Desert Shield/Storm that group of water dogs was a motley crew at best.We played a lot of softball together and always thought our college team was the best your Buckeyes and my Auburn Tigers. We stayed together from 91 to 95 splitting up at FT Polk when I got recruiting duty and you got Ft Living room.Young man you did alot from that time on.What I remember most is you were the first one to call me when I pinned SFC back in 2001.You filled me in on your new wonderful family that had come into your life.Buddy you sounded so happy and we always said we would get together and I would give you that salute from a SR. NCO that you deserved. When I found myself in Hawaii with the 25th In Div I looked you up on AKO and called you in Jan 2006.You told me about your wonderful family and all about your career that was on a fast track to great things. We talked for a while and you told me we would get together when we both got back from Iraq me from the MiTT team and you from your assignment. It is with great sorrow that I ran into one of your Dive soldiers and they told me of your loss.We as soldiers do not look at the fallen warrior list for fear of becoming one of them. That is why this tribute is so late. Shawn I still see your smile and you saying "come on Granpa lets get it done"Shawn I am proud to say that you were and still are a true friend and I grieve for you and your family.I am so sorry I just found out about your passing .Brother I have been thinking of all the good times we had in washington at Lewis and at Ft Polk they just keep popping into my mind. Thanks for being my friend and showing all the other water dogs what it was truly all about. To your family I can tell them you were a good person and an outstanding soldier. A year ago a great man returned to his Father in Heaven. We were blessed as a family to know him, but the world is blessed for the great family he leaves behind. Three sons who will do great things while on this earth, and his wife Tricia whom anyone that knows her truly loves and admires.

Thank you for the sacrifice made by Capt English and the sacrifice made by everyone who loves and misses him! It is especially heartbreaking to lose a fellow member of the Buckeye state. May God bless all of you!!

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised LE RON A. WILSON (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
