Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Pomante Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

"Veej" You are so missed. It has been almost 4 years and I still tear up every time I think about you, Travis and Megan. I walk this earth every day thanking Megan for the 'gift' of life so I can see my children and hug my wife. To Travis for always having a great story and to you for all the good memories and laughs we had smoking our cigars! You guys made the time in Ramadi fly by, life without you guys is tough, but I'm grateful to have had you in my life and I promise to earn every day I walk on this earth as a tribute to your sacrifice.

But having my buddies next to me is what it is all about. You may be gone Vincent, but I belive that your family and friends are smiling when ever they talk about. Life is a wonderful gift and that gift you gave to America. I want to thank you Vincent and your familyfor my gift of Freedom.

I remember it like it was yesterday. Comin off a 4 day trip into the desert. Tired. Hungry. Walked into the px on Camp Ramadi to see Pomante's head up high, smiling. Waving to say hi to me. He always had that goofy smile on him. I think that's what I miss most about him. His calm, relaxed attitude. We never really got to hangout in Iraq too often. Different teams, different areas. But when we did he always wanted to go back out. He always had that itch to go out on patrol. I remember telling him in Tall Afar before the move to slow down. You're gonna get plenty of chances to go out. He didn't like that. He wanted to be out all day. All night. Helping in whatever way he could. I miss him so much. Such an amazing and inspiring person. Murray misses you too buddy. You're always in my thoughts.

VJ, it's hard to believe it's been almost 3 years! Rest assured there's not a single day that passes that you don't cross my mind. You and your family are in my prayers each and every night. So many of us miss you and think of you often. The most amazing thing is the fact that you're still inspiring so many people to better themselves and go through life with the same positive and enthusiastic attitude that we all knew you for. Thanks so much for everything you've done and continue to do for all of us who knew you AND the many Americans who didn't. Happy Veteran's Day to a true hero in every sense of the word.

The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Vincent, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I knew SPC Pomante as part of Ready First Combat Team's staff. I worked nonstop from Dec. 4 to the morning of Dec. 6, and when some media folks needed to go to breakfast, Pomante, noticing how dog-tired I was, offered to take them so I could grab some sleep. Some sleep turned into 6 hours. Upon waking up, I found our staff had lost 3 valuable members.
Helping to pack up his gear, especially the 'Only Pomante' stuff like the tomahawks was hard, but I can't even imagine how hard it was to receive those neatly packed boxes. SPC Vincent Pomante was one of the most unique individuals I've ever had the pleasure of spending time with, and I know my world got a little grayer when we lost him.

I knew SPC Pomante from Brigade staff, but more from our time in the Underdog Cafe, an improvised coffee bar built by soldiers behind the Brigade HQ. Every Thursday night they had an open mic night, and every Thursday Pomante came out to hear SFC Williams play guitar and myself tell jokes. He was always the first person I went to after I came off stage, to see how he liked that week's jokes and to ask for notes, and he always knew the latest releases by the best comedians, not just the popular ones. On the few nights that SFC Will couldn't play, and hardly anyone came out, Pomante and I would still sit and talk. He had great stories from home, of crazy stuff he'd done with his friends growing up. Every Thursday SFC Williams would play Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven," and dedicate it to the Soldiers we had lost. After V.J. was killed, it took on that much more meaning for me, as I would sit and look at the chair he should've still been in. He was so well liked on staff, everyone felt they had a friend in him and not just as a Soldier or work-aquaintence. He was so easy going, and once you got into telling stories back and forth with him, you almost forgot where you were. He is and will be greatly missed.

One year ago, this December 6, a special man was taken while serving in Iraq. Army Specialist Vincent James Pomante III, was such a big name for such an easy going guy. He was known simply as V.J., which was often slurred into “Veej” at that. I can say pretty confidently, he was the only V.J. to grace the hallways of Westerville City Schools, the wrestling mats in the gym, the rowboats for CREW, or the theatre at Westerville South. The only V.J. to sport a mullet in twenty-first century suburbia, the only V.J. that could make me a kite that would actually fly in eighth grade shop class. Although we all laugh, because it is a rare person who can get the word “mullet” worked into their funeral service, that is also the reason losing him has been so hard – he was truly a one-of-a-kind. V.J.’s younger years were surely a whirlwind for his parents – he was always on “GO” and always looking for an adventure. At Westerville South, almost everyone knew him, which is quite an accomplishment in a school of almost five hundred students. And as an adult he was flourishing into an extraordinary human being – well rounded and educated not by school, but by the world around him. And after death, he is remembered as a “good hearted warrior”, a “true hero”, “bursting with energy”, “a sweet gentle soul” (online guestbook at Columbus Dispatch Obituaries). At his funeral he was awarded the Purple Heart (an award to any member of the Armed Forces who has been wounded or killed while in enemy combat) and the Bronze Star (an award to any United States Army soldier who has distinguished themselves by heroic and meritorious achievement or service). I write this as my way of remembering my friend, and to help everyone else remember too. The loss of this man has left broken hearts all over the world. I find a little peace, and maybe you will too, in these song lyrics when thinking about V.J.: “Just remember this, I’m in a better place where soldiers live in peace and angels sing “Amazing Grace” (Tim McGraw, “If You’re Reading This”). We all still love you V.J.
Matt Johnson

I wasn't available to make it to the funeral and have regretted it since. Due to recent events in my life I decided to do a search for VJ and came across this. We all know how good a friend he was to everyone and I could only imagine how good a son and brother to Amy. He'll always be missed and loved in the hearts of everyone luckily to have him pass through our life and remembered as the good hearted warrior he had always been.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

The day's seem to go by bringing a new memory. Memories i dont want to forget. Memories i may not have remembered had he came back safe.
Some way i wish time could change to make a new memory. An amazing memory to talk about. I know Vj was needed. He was there for a reason. Just like everything else he did and now gone for a reason. He was needed somewhere else. Somewhere he is making memories. I am grateful i had my time. When our family needed him, a little 6 year old boy, busting through the back door faster than he came through the front. His energy felt by everyone. Always bursting with energy. He brought us all a laugh, I look back now and realize why he was there. We all needed our time with Vj to make an unforgettable memory to brighten our day.
Thank you Vj. You brighten my day.....
Remember your time with him. Let it brighten your day.

And your picture in a frame.
Your memory is our keepsake
With which we'll never part
God has you in His keeping
We have you in our Heart.

“Soldier”
To Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers
Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever
Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away
Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go
We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light
Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray
Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

I know that I haven't seen you for a very long time but I wanted you to know that I was thinking of your family. I just learned today of VJ's passing. Karen and Family,
VJ rowed on the Westerville Crew team with my son Charles, and I vividly remember his smile and jovial spirit. Sometimes feelings go too deep for words, and this is one of those times. I'm so very sorry for your loss. Please know that you are in our daily thoughts and prayers.

Karen & Family,
I spent an hour in the card store trying to find a card with the appropriate words...only to realize there are no words that can even come close to giving the comfort that I would like to be able to offer. However, I commit to continually lifting your family up to our God in prayer....asking for the peace that only He can give. God Bless you and keep you in His circle of mercy now and always.

VJ always had a Smile for everyone and an ability to make anyone laugh, no matter how serious a situation. That made him hard to coach, but a great friend. I'll miss him. I'm so sorry for your loss.

We are going to miss VJ more than we know yet, and we can learn from how he lived his life. Do everything with a smile, and enjoy the people you love. They can be gone before you even know what happened.

Vince and Family,
We are so sorry to hear of your loss. V.J. was indeed a special person and was a true patriot. We remember him as a youngster during his visits to Grandma Melba's house in North Carolina. Even as a young boy, he exhibited so many wonderful qualities. Your family is indeed in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Please do not hesitate to let us know if there is anything we can do for you or for Melba.

Karen, Vince & Amy,
Greater love has no man than to lay down his life for his friends. I also believe that goes when serving your country. Karen, you told us many times that VJ was proud of what he was doing for his country. When we were told of what happened we sat in stunned silence. Our thoughts and especially prayers are with you, the family and VJ's comrades. He is a true American hero.
We are available to all of you, whatever you need

I never had the honor of meeting VJ, but I do know of him through his friend, BJ Dinsmore, and I would like to add my condolences in your loss. My heart is breaking for all of you. Please know that you and your family are in my prayers and that I feel VJ has a new seat of honor in heaven as an advisor to the angels that are protecting the soldiers that are still in IRAQ. May God grant you the peace that passes all understanding as you go through this terrible time.

Dearest Vince, Karen & Amy,
Unfinished chapters of V.J.’s life can only be imagined. As the “whys” and “what-ifs” linger, take comfort in the memories and in knowing those chapters never lived would have certainly mirrored those you shared. You are neither alone in your grief nor in your pride. Those of us who knew V.J., and a nation not so privileged, share your profound sorrow and abundant pride. Let’s pray that V.J. is one of the last to sacrifice his unwritten chapters.
With love,
Nicole and Doug Jones & Family

We feel so gravely sorry and our hearts go out to the family and friends of V.J.. Having never known V.J., but having the opportunity to be close friends with his Father, we know the pain He is feeling and our prayers go out to all who knew and loved V.J.. We are proud that V.J. not only served his country but truely felt in his heart that he was doing what was right and felt good about what he was accomplishing in his tour of duty. It is hard to lose someone so young and full of hope for the future. May God comfort all who will have a void in their lives and hearts now that V.J. has gone to God.
