I moved to Seattle so I hadn't been able to visit JR as often as I would when I lived in Houston. Was able to stop by and visited his plot during my brief visit to TX. It'd been about six years since I last visited. Even if we can't always be there physically, know JR is always in our thoughts. He was a great friend and a beautiful life.

I served with Sgt Tijerina as well (nice to see you post as well, Wassell). He was an uplifting guy, we often enjoyed talking about cars and shooting the crap about the day. I never once heard a complaint from James, he was always in a good mood and easily brought up the rest of the group. I admired his optimistic attitude and was looking forward to seeing him when he was back from deployment. I wish his family well.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

The Tijerina family,
I just wanted to stop in and tell you how much of an honor it was to serve with TJ. I actually flew my first CASEVAC mission with him into Ramadi to save a Navy Corpsman.

On the last deployment he used to joke with me about how bad my form was when shooting a basketball. He then taught me the "right" way and we played numerous games in our off time against the CASEVAC Corpsmen.

I work in avionics so when the bell rings we run out with the crews and make sure the aircrafts get out ok. It just so happens that I ended up taxiing out TJ's bird. After I saluted Capt. Harris I looked to the crew door to see TJ waving bye to me smiling. I smiled back, waved then went back to work. I have sat and prayed about everything that happened and just know that the Lord does work in mysterious ways, and he has a plan for all of us. I am definately a better Marine having served with him.

My family and I send you our thoughts and prayers. Take care and God Bless you.

"Big Brother"

For those that did not know my cousin the way I did, Im sorry because he was such an amazing cousin/brother that even my words can not describe to you all in detail what he meant to me and my family.

I am 4 years younger then Jr, and my parents were always doing things with his (our dads were brothers), so naturally when we were growing up we lived in the same town "Katy" and attended the same church and did the same sports. Every single Sunday after church was over we would all go back to Aunt Lillie and Uncle Pete's house in Governor's Place (Providence St) and spend the entire afternoon and evening together. The moms would be in the kitchen cooking, dads watching the sports in the living room, while us kids were either upstairs creating these fasinating haunted houses in Jr and Peter's rooms. Jr and my sister Dayna (same age as Jr) would always pair up against myself and Peter (Jrs big brother by 1 yr). We would literally be stuck in the rooms for hours upon end, and then when we were done creating our "little master pieces" we would switch rooms and enter them. If it wasnt the haunted houses, it was all of us outside in the back yard playing basketball, softball, hiding seek or playing in the playhouse that (Jr, Peter and their friends had built). I remember this one time Jr's pet snake got loose in the house. Can I just say that we were so scared to go anywhere by our selves for fear that the snake would pop out from anywhere, Oh Jr always with those darn snakes, or creatures of that sort. :) We also would have our parties at Cullen Park in Katy, and it never failed every year Jr and Peter would come with all their friends (Patrick Conklin, Danny Nichols, Jeremy Vincik, and Joe Whyle)...they would chase us through out the park and what not, great memories. The last memory I have of Jr was Christmas Season 2005. Jr had just got into town and he had brought his fiance at the time Clowie (for all of us to meet her), I had just got out of work and was so tired and didnt want to go anywhere, Dayna got the call from Jr that he was here and that he had old friends that he wanted us to come see. Since it was Jr (and I had not seen him in a while) I said okay, we got ready and went to Jullians off of I10, as soon as we walked in we saw Jr, Clowie, Eric (another friend), Peter, Jeremy and Danny (whome we had not seen in about 6 or 7 years), we felt like we were kids again. We played some pool and then went to Drink Houston, the whole time Jr had his camera around his neck, snapping photos here and there. The last memory of that night was Jr videoing myself falling of of Peters back (from a piggie back ride gone wrong) I can still hear Jr's laughter....he got it on tape and was so proud of himself...haha....the next night was New Years Eve. Everyone ended up going to Charbar in Houston that evening. Dayna and I were dancing with Clowie, and decided to teach Jr how to move them hips the right way. That was always a conqest with him, he just could never dance. I remember putting my hands on his hips saying "Come on Jr, move them hips, dance, dance!" Great memories, we later went to Lynn and her husband Randy's apartment and hung out. These are the last memories of my beloved cousin. I miss him terribly, because of him, all the child-hood friends plus some are back together again, and we hang out as much as possible, JR is always present, we can feel him in the wind. I miss him, he comes to me in my dreams and we visit him all the time. I just wanted everyone to know what an amazing person he was, amazing athlete he was....because he was 89 in football for Katy High School, I was always 89 in my sports....he was my big brother that I looked up to, and still do...because he was a hero, and those are big shoes to fill.

Love and miss you Jr!

Your lil' sis,
Kat

“Paid in Full”
To Honor The Service of Fallen and Injured Marines

Marines through and through, they paid the price
Six thousand miles away, we live the life
For which they paid with their blood, spirits and bodies
We will never forget what they paid in full

We hope and we pray that somehow their loved ones find comfort
In God, in the flag, in the memory of their loved ones’ bravery
They’re gone now but we see them still…proud, strong, willing
Covering each other’s backs… courageous, moving forward

What kind of love did they have for us to be willing
To give it all for the Black, White, Jew, Christian, Muslim?
We don’t comprehend but we honor you now and forever
You are Our Marines…some living…some not
Forever in our hearts we will cherish your lives

Lives too short yet immortal they’ll be
Highest brotherhood of the Few, the Proud
They stand at attention, and we gaze with awe
Some know their names not, but our admiration for them
Flows limitless within us, between us

They sacrificed their limbs or their lives
Freedom still rings, a soft sound across the miles
It tolls slowly; all of creation takes note
Of the lives that were lost for people unknown

Out of sight but not lost; forever among us
The starched blues marching straight
Toward the place where we will meet them
Many years from now…how we loved them…
Well done beloved Brothers and Sisters…You’ve paid it in full
Always Faithful Marines, You Have Paid it in Full

I was fortunate enough to know JR for about 7 years. We strangely met through an AOL chat room back in 2000. We became great friends right around the time his bestfriend Ryan passed away. JR and I would share poetry, music and photos with each other. You can find some of his poetry on the website poetry.com just by entering his name.

When JR first told me he was going to enlist for the Marines my first reaction was to yell NO to him. But he eased my mind every day before he left because there was a passion in his voice about getting to serve in the Marine Corp. This is what he wanted to do, along side owning his own shrimping boat. Knowing that does ease my pain a tad.

JR helped me through a really cummy time in my life and I'll always remember him to be a complete gentleman. I'll remember him playing basketball and always having something encouraging to say.

I wish so much that I would have heard the news sooner for I would have very much attended his funeral, but I only found out about his death last night by accident. I was actually going to send him a message on his myspace.com account when I suddenly noticed all the farewell comments that all his friends had been leaving. Once the denial passed I instantly thought of Clowie. JR would tell me how picky he was about being committed to someone, we'd even joke about it saying he just had committment issues, but the day he told me about Clowie he was so sure of her. I was happy and excited for him. My heart aches for Clowie's loss. JR was one of those rare guys that girls always hope to catch. It breaks my heart that their future together was cut so short. I hope more than anything that she makes it through this tough time.

Thank you so much for raising such a great man. Thank you JR for ever gracing my existance. I love you and you'll be very much missed. I'll see you on the other side, my stellar.

To Lilia Carr & Tijerina Family,
My deepest sympathy for your lost.
I, to feel a great lost because, this great man married my niece Clowean, which hurts me deeply. I first met J.R. when he started dating Clowean, he was a kind, gentle, and responsible which made him the perfect man for my sweet niece. The dreams that they both had have been shattered, for all of us. As a former Marine, I feel the lost that all brothers at arms feel when they lose one of their own. My prayers and hopes are with you all.

To the family of Sgt. Tijerina,
Our words of sympathy can do little to lessen your grief, but hopefully time will offer some healing. Our son, Sgt. Brian Dinning, served with "T. J." during the last two deployments in Iraq. I know that by virtue of his calling, your son was of the highest caliber. Thank you for his sacifice and I know that his presence will be sorely missed. God Bless and know that you all are in our thoughts and prayers. Sincerely,
Dan and Mary Dinning

Peter and Family,

Like so many other people at the Memorial Saturday, JR was my best friend.

I can remember him dragging me out to the basketball court everyday no matter how hot it was in the summertime. I also remember working out with JR and him turning the heater on and I thought he was crazy, but that was the kind of person JR was, he made you want to be a better person, whether it be working, playing, or even playing practical jokes on someone. He was the most self-motivated person I have ever met.

One of my favorite memories of JR was a trip to Clear Lake to do some landscaping for his mother. We woke up at 6:00 in the morning and headed out on which was supposed to be about a half day job, which mainly consisted of cleaning out a few flower beds and planting a flowers. Well, 12 hours later just as it was about to get dark, and our hands were completely blistered, we had re-done the entire lawn, because JR did not want to leave until everything was perfect, I didn't mind because I knew that was the kind of person JR was, he was not satisfied with anything less than perfection.

JR Tijerina was, is, and will always be a hero, and the most courageous friend I have ever known. I can not wait to get the chance to see him one day and tell him Thank You for being an inspiration to me.

JR is a TRUE AMERICAN HERO.
