Lucas Starcevich Obituary

PEORIA - Lucas Vincent Starcevich, 25, of Tolono, Ill., was killed in action in Baghdad, Iraq, at 4:30 a.m. Monday, April 16, 2007.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, April 27, 2007, at Morgan Memorial Home, 1304 Regency Drive West, Savoy, with the Rev. Roger Ross officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 26, 2007, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Camp Bulter National Cemetery in Springfield, with military rites accorded by the U.S. Army.

Pfc. Starcevich was born June 6, 1981, in Peoria, Ill. He is the son of Bradley K. and Ava D. (Rives) Tomson.

His mother, Ava D. and Richard D. Tomson of Tolono, Ill., survive. His father, Bradley K. and Glenda Starcevich of St. Charles, Ill., survive. Also surviving are his fiance, Christina Hom of Germany; two brothers, Trenton Starcevich and Andrew Tomson, both of Tolono; two sisters, Ariana (Glenn) Reyes of Plainfield, Ill., and Samantha Tomson of Tolono, Ill.; his niece, Ava Reyes of Plainfield, Ill.; and his nephew, Gavin Reyes of Plainfield, Ill.; his grandmother, Joyce Starcevich of Canton, Ill.; and his maternal grandparents, Larry and Barbara Rives of Marion, Ky.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Frank J. Starcevich.

Pfc. Starcevich was a member of the Army's 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division. He attended Unity High School, Aurora High School and Parkland College, and first enlisted in the Army in 2000. It was Pfc. Starcevich's second tour of duty in Iraq. After his first tour as a chemical weapons specialist, he was honorably discharged in 2004 and went back to school. In January, he re-enlisted with a unit based in Schweinfurt, Germany.

He was a member of the Tolono United Methodist Church, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

His hobbies included drawing, painting and skateboarding. He loved animals and had trained his family's two dogs. He lived life on the edge. Lucas felt his calling in the military and the family wishes for us to remember those serving and their families that are here making sacrifices.

Memorials can be made to the memorial fund at Busey Bank for an educational fund in his name; the American Legion or the VFW of the donor's choice; or the Champaign County Humane Society.

To the family and friends of Pfc. Starcevich,

The Run for the Fallen 2010 was held in Charleston, IL on August 21st of this year and my father was privileged to walk for Pfc. Starcevich. My father is 89 years old and he is a veteran of WWII, but felt strongly about representing one of our fallen heroes in the event, and he was extremely proud to represent Lucas.

Nothing we can say can possibly make this tragedy any easier, or any more acceptable, but from my family to your family, and to the people who loved this fine young man, we would like you to know we are grateful to him for what he has done for us. And he is NOT forgotten.

And to Lucas's parents. My son served in the National Guard, but was killed in a non-military accident just prior to deploying to Afghanistan - my heart so goes out to you in your loss. It is a loss like no other. I am truly sorry.

Dear family of Pfc. Lucas V. Starcevich,

We want to say thank you. We understand that no words can be adequate for your sorrow. We certainly do not want to intrude upon your privacy. As Americans we want you to know that we deeply appreciate the ultimate sacrifice your loved one has made for all of us. We also would like for you to be aware that with this letter comes our special concern and prayers for you. We are all safer because young men and women who love their country, and know the value of a free nation, are willing to put themselves in harms way, and lay down their lives to keep this nation free and safe for all of us.
Your sacrifice is also very great. We know that we can give little comfort; however, the knowledge that your loved one did not die in vain, but died in the service of our country, gives each of us a noble example of the value of life, and the responsibility of freedom. We hope this will bring pride and comfort to you.
We at Gethsemane Church believe that there is purpose to life. We send this letter with our deepest appreciation for the greatest of sacrifices, you and your loved one have given to this country. We know it is not enough, but please allow us to assure you that your loved one is not forgotten.

Very Sincerely

Frank G. Noyes

It has been a year today since we lost you. My eyes fill with tears and mere words cannot describe the emotions. I think fondly on the energetic little boy I knew and with pride on the man he became. I recall the overwhelming anguish in his mothers face that day and the incredible strength she has shown this past year. If I were only as strong. (Love you Sis). His concern was with his comrades in arms and he was, were he thought he should be. He is our hero. We love him and greatly miss him. We will see him again on the last day.

For those reading this, please remember Lucas in your prayers along with all of the men and women defending our freedoms. My God bless and keep them.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

Please contact me and I will email you back a copy of an

I did not know Lucas, but I am remembering on
this day he gave his all.
He is my hero.

To the Family of PFC. Lucas Starcevich,

Please accept my heartfelt condolences for the loss of your son Lucas Starcevich.
I first saw the story of your family in Time magazine (June issue), shown to me by my younger brother Robert.
Lucas so much reminded me of my son Ben Starcevich.
Our family are a world away in Australia and Starcevich is not a common name here with my Grandfather coming from Lic in Yugoslavia, born 1892, son of Paul Starcevich and Mary Budicelic in a family of seven.
I am thankfully that my sons did not choose to follow my brothers and I into military service, the fear for your children is greater than the fear for yourself.
We remember our fallen soldiers on a special day - ANZAC Day, but mothers, fathers, family, friends remember their loss every day.
They are always with you in your heart, may God watch over you and your family in this time of sadness.

We would like to express our deepest sympathy for the loss of your son and hero. We also have a son in the service serving our Country and can only imagine the sorrow that you are going through. Our soldiers and your son have made great sacrifices and we Thank them for that. They are all so courageous and brave and our hearts go out to all. God Bless America, God Bless you.

August 17, 2007

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

June 12, 2007

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers

Soldiers write history…they pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light

Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray

Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

To Ava, Richard, Christina, Ariana, Trenton and family,
I am devastated by the news of Luke's passing... I regret not trying harder to locate you, Ava, in the recent years. Many times I have wondered how you and your three wonderful children were getting along. I think back fondly on many years together and fun times at Christmas. I recognized the unique qualities in Luke's character. I have had the pleasure to be a friend and influence to two sets of step children and your family. Luke seemed to blaze his own trail with a big heart which was evident. Such a cool guy! It took me days to be able to write this without breaking down with tears. Please know that I pray for you at this most difficult time. I lost my twin brother in 1999 and perhaps can understand some of your grief. I admire Luke's dedication to our country. With Love, and God's blessings and healing,

A mother's love is the most precious love of all. The bond you share with each child is unique and so special. Find peace in knowing that you helped Lucas become the fine young man he was. No parent can choose the destination their child will take. The path in life he took was to not only to love his family but the entire country. May your deepest pain and sorrow be comforted with pride and contentment of knowing he touched many lives in this world.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there... I do not sleep.
I am the thousand winds that blow...
I am the diamond glints on snow...

I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you waken in the morning's hush,

Do not stand at my grave and cry-
I am not there... I did not die...

You put yourselves in harms way, so that there can be peace of mind at such a hard time for many families. You are guardians (Heroes) for our Heroes. Thank You...for giving all you do.

I did not have the honor of knowing your son, but as the wife of a soldier, I hurt any time I hear news of another lost. I have been in contact with a few military spouses that knew "Star" in Germany and they have nothing but WONDERFUL things to say about him. I cannot imagine your pain. Lucas~~Thank you for protecting our freedoms!! Please send your family a sign that you are close!

To Lucas's family~~I pray that you will be able to find peace during this time of grief. I am honored to know that a Lucas's honor gaurd is coming from here at Fort Leonard Wood, and that they will take care of him and your family. I personally know some of them, and they are all honored to bring your son home to you!
He will never be forgotten!!
God Bless all of you!

Ava and Family--We are so deeply sorry for the loss of Luke. It was our priviledge to meet him at your house and to know what a special young man he was. He gave all for what he believed in--freedom. We send you great Love and Blessings during this most difficult time in your lives. Lucas inspires all of us with his selfless giving for his fellowman.

Words cannot describe the loss of Lucas to you or to the Nation. You can be very proud of the job that Lucas performed. As a retired Major, who returned in 2005 from Iraq where it was my privelege to command great soldiers such as Lucas, I know it is a loss for all. No one, except the soldier, fully understands the calling we have. From all I have read of Lucas, he was just like my soldiers, who no matter the danger were always ready to face the enemy down. It is because of your son and many others that we are remaining free. While, these words will not bring your Lucas back, for those of us that love Freedom, he and the men and women like him will always have a special place in our hearts.

Thank you. I have a granddaughter coming in July, your sacrifice helps to ensure that she will be able to grow and thrive in a free country. 25 years old is so very young, but also so caring and giving and more mature than the rest of us who are soooo much older. I can only send hugs and prayers to all and say again-Thank you, from the free world.

Know in your heart that Lucus is a true hero and will never be forgotten. All gave some, some gave all. Rest in peace Lucas. You will be missed by everyone’s life you have touched.

To Lucas' family, as the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life’s routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family, friends, and all Americans for the sacrifice of one of your family members for our freedom. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. May you find comfort in the loving embrace of our Heavenly Father.

Pfc. Lucas V. Starcevich
you are my hero
may god keep you in his arms forever.

April 18, 2007

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

The price Pfc Lucas V. Starcevich and his family have paid for this country and for freedom, Will Never Be Forgotten.
Please know how Deeply Sorry I am to learn of the loss of this Brave Young Soldier.

May Lucas rest safely in the Loving Care of God and may the Grace and Comfort of the Lord be with the Starcevich family.
There will Never Be Enough Ways to Humbly Thank these Heroes for their Supreme Sacrifice, my brother among them. Killed in action in Vietnam in 1967.

"I consider that our present sufferings.
are not worth comparing with the glory
that shall be revealed in us."
Romans 8:18

May you find Peace in knowing the love and memories you have of Lucas, will remain in your heart forever and that this Country Will Not Forget his Sacrifice.
You are in my thoughts and prayers.
