I come to this site all the time.

I've never left a note. But since I see that Sgt Steele and SSgt Folden have left notes, I'll left something, too.

I think about Steve all the time. He was humble and funny, self-deprecating even. I hope he knew how much we all loved him, not just for the work he did to keep us safe on the Anbar highways, but for his infectious calm. He was so fearless and self-confident. He's missed.

Perhaps they are not stars, but rather openings in Heaven where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy...

It has been 2 years since you left us, and not a day goes by that you are not thought of. I think back on old memories and smile knowing you were part of them. I will always be proud to have had you as a cousin, a true hero! You are an inspiration to all that have been lucky enough to have had you in their lives. To my dearest Stephen. This weekend is my birthday and Valentines, and I was sitting at home alone looking down at my hand where the ring that you had bought me still stays. For the past two February's I have thought about how much I still miss and love you. This month was "our" month. And even though you are no longer with me, I still remember the time we had celebrating our special month and how I will forever wish I just had one more day with you. I love you.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Stephen, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I do know that, after serving alongside you as one of the EOD corpsmen on your final deployment, that you will always be sorely missed. Your dedication to your work and your easy going manner were a constant delight to be around, even when "it" hit the fan at times. . .It is with joy that I remember who you were, and everytime I think of us in 29 Palms, it brings a smile to my face. We will meet again when God deems it so. Until then, your memory is greatly treasured.

Dearest Stephen,
No words can ever express how I feel about the loss of my dearly beloved son. It has been five months since your untimely death, yet, it seems like only yesterday. My heart is broken. I am just devestated. My tears are just as plentiful today as that dreadful day when I received the sad news. Not a day goes by that I don't think about you. Your easy going ways, your silly little grin, your love affair with the 24-hour fitness center, your love of sports and playing playstation. Your surprise visits home.

I still remember the day when you were 5 years old and your dad put you in as goalie on the soccer team. Your were very small and your little legs were so short that when the soccer ball rolled towards the net you ran out to get it. You picked up the ball and when you went to kick it your little legs were so short, that you fell right on your little butt. The spectators laughed, but, you recovered and kicked the ball out of your end of the field. We all applauded and cheered for you. You were just so cute.

When you deployed for the 3rd time to Iraq, I was very worried and full of unrest. You assured me that everything would be OK and you would come home safely to us. You seemed to have no fear even though the job you did, that of an EOD Tech, was one of the most dangerous jobs in the Corp...the job of keeping your fellow Marines and brother safe.

I know that you loved being a Marine and I was oh, so proud of you. I doubt that if you were to do it all over again, that you would change a thing as you so loved your job.

The Marine Corp has honored you with the Bronze Star with Combat V. The most distinguishing device for Valor and the most respected and meaningful award across the Corp. I was so proud to receive it in your honor.

The Marines have been just wonderful to our family. They truly are as devasted as we all are. They have been here for us every step of the way. Along the path I have acquired several more Marine sons who call me mom, but, none could ever replace you.

I feel that God has given me a mountain to climb. I don't know if I can ever make it. I just take it one day at a time, one step at a time. I know that one day we will be together again when my time here on earth is done. Until that day just remember I will always love you, always miss you, always cheris the memories of you. I am proud of you my son, my friend, my angel, my Marine.

Love always,
mom

Take comfort in knowing that now you have a special guardian angel to watch over you.

The Schreiner Family

November 16, 2007

To Stephen's Family:

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above. Here, there's no more tears of sadness: here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through, God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again: you were missed while you were gone. As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly: you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do. And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight, God and I are closest to you...in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears. But do not be afraid to cry: it does relieve the pain. Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand. But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er, I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb, But together we can do it by taking one day at a time. It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too... that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain, then you can say to God at night..."My day was not in vain." And now I am contented...that my life has been worthwhile, knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low, just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go. When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind: I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go...from that body to be free, remember you're not going...you're coming here to me.

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised LE RON A. As an EOD widow myself I am saddened to learn of another soldiers death but it especially hits home harder when it is that of another EOD family member. I wish to pass you loving thoughts during this difficult time. While everyone will tell you that time will heal all wounds and it will get easier with time. I offer these words of experience and hope. Time will not take this pain away however you will learn to live again even through the loss and pain of a wonderful man. Look for those that bring you comfort you and lean on them during this time. I found that talking about my beloved Scott everyday and passing his memories on to everyone I meet has helped a great deal. Remember that he'd want you to move on and he died for YOUR freedom and YOUR happiness, YOUR right to live in this great country...so honor that sacrifice by continuing to live on the same way you did when he was here to watch you and love you. He can still watch you from afar and a it is my hopes to someday be reunited with the man I love and lost, I hope the same will happen for you someday. While there are NO words that can bring you comfort, I hope that the memory of such a wonderful hero can help to bring that comfort into your lives again. This is a poem I received shortly after Scott was killed and I thought it might also bring some comfort to you.

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

All the best to find your happiness again.

I served as the operations officer for MSSG-13 when SSgt Wilson deployed with the 13th MEU in 05/06. I was the OIC for the EOD Marines and was always impressed with their bravely, skill, and intelligence. SSgt Wilson was one the bravest, hardest working, and intelligent Marines I have ever met. The thing that really got me about him was how humble and low key he was about the incredible job he did. He did one of the most dangerous jobs in the Marines with a calmness that was incredible. He will be dearly missed.

To Stephen's Family: I wish I could express to you how sorry I am for the loss of Stephen. My husband also deployed with the 13th MEU and even though they did not know each other I was just as shocked as if it had been someone I knew. When I learned of the news it hit me hard, reminding me of the fragility of this life. I hope that time will eventually ease the pain, although I know that nothing will ever replace his presence. I hope to lead my life in such a way that deserves his sacrifice.

To the family of SSgt Steve Wilson,
I recently heard about Steve’s passing, and I would like to offer my condolences. I was privileged to work with Steve during his first deployment with 13th MEU; I was his Officer in Charge with MSSG-13. Steve was a great Marine, always ready and willing to help his fellow Marines when needed. I think it was this characteristic that propelled him in his work, knowing that his efforts were entirely aimed at keeping his brothers and sisters safe from enemy attacks. The great thing about Steve was that his attitude never changed. His smile never wavered and his optimism was as contagious to those of us around him as was his bravery. The EOD community and the Marine Corps in general are all saddened by your loss, for we have lost a truly heroic American. My thoughts are with you during this time, and if you need anything please don’t hesitate to ask. I have a few pictures of him while we were deployed, if you would like them.

Its seems as if it were just yesterday Steve was squeezing ketup on a plate for Makayla, and playing with baby Rylee. I will always remember him as loving, and silly, with a bit of a wild side! He was a Model Marine and a Great Friend to all, I felt as if I knew him even before I had the pleasure of actually meeting him, Alvin kept him in our lives weather he was home or deployed with all of the childhood stories he would tell of them together. He was like a brother to Alvin. Our girls will now and forever know him as "UNCLE STEVE" a TRUE AMERICAN HERO, who sacrificed all for THEM and all other fellow AMERICANS! I assure you his legacy will live on through my girls, and all the lives he has touched. Thank you for bringing him into our lives, even if just for awhile... Our thought's and prayers are with all of you. He will be dearly missed.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

Today I had the privilege of meeting the family of a fallen hero. Marine Staff Sgt. Steven Wilson. What a beautiful tribute the city of Brentwood Ca. gave your son today. Flags at halfmask, flags lining the route to the church, the Mayor proclaiming the "Steven Wilson Day". the tributes by those who knew your son, the food provided by the V.F.W. are memories you can keep in your heart always. May Christ give you strength and peace to learn to live without Steve. May God Bless and keep you in the palm of his hand. "Greater love has no man than a man who lays down his life for others". In a few short weeks, my son's National Guard unit will return from thier service in Iraq. To date, 20 who left with the unit came back early as your son did. While speaking with one of our fallen soldiers' Father, he put into words what he was feeling; "Every piece of my broken heart is filled with pride". This is how I feel with every reported soldier that makes the ultimate sacrifice. My son is coming home to us with the rest of his unit and they will be honored as heros. It will be our legacy to continue to remember the sacrifice of your son and so many others and to make sure that they are never forgotten. May God bless and bring peace and understanding to you and your family.

I just returned from Iraq after being injured from an IED roadside bomb while working as a private security officer. The first troops on the scene were from the 3rd. They protected me from any further harm, treated me and called in my evacuation to a medical facility. I have the strongest respect for any man or women who puts themselves in harms way for the rest of us. But I have a deep admiration for those in the 3rd. I lived in Danville for many years till I left for the military and am deeply saddened to hear of the loss of this brave young man. My heartful prayers are with the family. Stephen....SEMPER FI!

As a Bay Area resident and also a mother of a Marine serving his 2nd tour Iraq, I am very proud of Stephen. My heart aches for his mother and entire family. Words cannot allay the grief they feel, but they can rest easy in that he died serving his country and doing what he wanted to do. From what I read, he was a son to be very proud of. My prayers are with you at this time. God Bless.

We lost another hero. Stephen is now at peace and nothing can ever again hurt him. There are no words to help your family-but I do know exactly what you are going through. I believe the EOD techs have the most dangerous duty in this war. He is with his Marine Brothers now and is standing guard with them looking over us all.

To
Steve's parents and family,
Be proud of your son as he did what he wanted to do and accomplish. We
also know the fears as parents of an Army soldier who will be leaving
for Iraq 2nd tour the end of July (also dessert storm) but they do what
they need to do and we are all grateful to have young men and women who
care about our freedom and our country. Thoughts and prayers are with
you at this time of grief. Our son also graduated from Liberty High
School.

My family and I would like to thank this brave young man for protecting this wonderful country and our family. We consider this young man a hero and I want his family to know that we appreciate all that he has done to make it possible for our family to live the way we do. Without brave young men like this one, our lives would be so very different. Our deepest and most heartfelt sympathy goes out to this family. God bless America and the brave young men who defend this land.

Mr. and Mrs. Wilson:

It was with great sadness I learned of what happened to SSgt Wilson today. I worked and deployed w/ him with MSSG-13 on the 13th MEU in 05-06. As MPs, we often provided security for he and his EOD team in Iraq. The Corps has lost a great Marine and you have lost a great son. I am so sorry. SSgt Wilson will be FOREVER remembered as a kindhearted, easy-going, good-natured, and respectful man. It was my honor to know him and serve w/ this gentle, yet fearless warrior...you must be proud. May you find peace and understanding in this most diffucult time. p.s. I was going through some old deployment photos today and I found about 5 or 6 of SSgt doing what he did best...keeping me and my Marines safe on the road. If you would like them, I would be happy to send them.

Respectfully,
Captain Justin D. Powell, USMC
