Robert McRill Obituary

By Douglas Carman of Highlands Today Published: July 10, 2007 LAKE PLACID — Robert McRill's name echoed through barber shops, restaurants and homes around town, even though his memory was faint. Petty Officer 1st Class McRill, who was killed Friday with two other Navy sailors by a roadside bomb in Iraq, became the first man from Highlands County to die in action during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Even if residents didn't know him, in McRill's hometown, his death struck home. Wilmer "Wimpy" Mathews, a retired member of the Army's 45th Infantry Division who was wounded in the Korean War, said he had mixed feelings about McRill's death. "A loss of life in a situation like this is bad at best," the veteran said as he sat in his golf cart near his home in Highlands Park Estates. At the same time, he said, "we're in a Catch 22 sort of situation" in this war. Kerry Abel, who heard about McRill through the grapevine at Tony's Barber Shop, shared a similiar view. "It hits home to you," the barber said. At Lake Placid High School, the staff was already reeling from last week's death of Keith Brian Williams, another Lake Placid alumnus who was near McRill's age. "I was sad because it was a Lake Placid kid," said Joyce Moretz, the school's administrative secretary. An Easygoing Man McRill's classmates said he was an easygoing man who "minded his p's and q's," as former classmate Perry Mason described him. "He was a really neat guy, good natured, always had a smile on his face," said Tim Garman, who was the senior class president at Lake Placid High School in 1983. He added that he honored McRill's sacrifice for his country. McRill went to Lake Placid High School, graduating in 1983. According to a press release supplied by the Navy, McRill enlisted in 1991 and trained at several bases before serving aboard the USS. Theodore Roosevelt in 1996 out of Norfolk, Va. In 2002, he transferred to another carrier, the USS. Dwight Eisenhower. In February 2004, he was assigned to the Naval Expeditionary Combat Command Detachment, where he became a military photographer and media specialist. He joined Naval Special Warfare Group Two in April. During the course of his service, McRill earned several awards, including a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, given to service members for "heroism, outstanding achievement or meritorious service." Lt. David Luckett, a spokesman of the Virginia Beach-based unit, described him as a "mentor" to his fellow sailors and found the same glowing personality in him that his classmates saw in his formulative years. "On a daily basis his positive attitude and can-do-spirit were contagious and made it a better place to come to work everyday," Luckett said. "He was incredibly committed to his family. He was incredibly committed to shipmates." He leaves behind a wife and three children living in Yorktown, Va. Highlands Today reporter Bill Rettew also contributed to this report.

Hey Bobby.

I watched "Act Of Valor" tonight. A magnificent film of Valor, Courage, Family & Sacrifice.

One of the best films on Navy Seals I have ever seen.

I smiled when I saw your name Bobby among the list of those to whom the film was dedicated.

I should tell you that I placed your Presidential coin in the hands of a Navy Chief who is now on tour "In Harm's Way". She is a dear friend of mine... a single mother of two little ones who I so earnestly hope returns safely to them.

So your life of Valor, my friend, continues to live on - now in some way as a symbol of sacrifice in Iraq to a new generation of Navy women and men... this time in Afghanistan.

I felt strongly moved to entrust that memory of the President Of The United States in your honor. When she brings it back home safe. I haven't told Josh this story yet.

Speakin' of the pup... your boy is a beloved work in progress. I will do my best to be your voice and your hands in Josh's life.

I plan to show him the "Act Of Valor"... and its dedication to you and all the other fallen heros of Naval Special Warefare.

PS: This 80's photo of you brings back memories of when I first met you.

Well, my friend, we've been selected for Master Chief Petty Officer. I know you knew before I did. Wish there was a communication system whereas you could have been the one to tell me. This promotion is probably more yours than mine. I miss you my friend.

And we don't even know you.... thank you all and God Bless the families you leave behind.

Bobby:
I was cleaning out a cabinet and found that bottle that you left here. I remember you said that you would leave it here so that you would have one when you needed it. I want you to know it will never move from that spot. We think about you all the time and miss you very much. Your leaving us has left a hole that none could ever fill. There is no one else that Greg and I could just sit and talk about life with. We miss those nights out on the deck just talking. The boys and I talk about the times you played with them. You made such an impact on little Gregg that he strives to be the man you were. You were a best friend to all of us and there will never be another like you. We miss you more than these words could ever make clear. But, we know how lucky we were to have known you. Thanks for your friendship. It meant the whole world to us.

I am going through a rough time. Kathy is there for me daily and I will make it through. But I sure wish you were still here on earth to help me sort things out. We think of you everyday. I still can't grasp the fact that you aren't here. I don't think any of us really can. I miss our talks about life and everything in between. I pray that one day I will see you again. And you will have all the answers to those questions we talked about. Greg misses you so much, but you know him. He doesn't talk about it. The boys keep your memories alive and we laugh about all those times you teased them, the abc's and your holding Joey in church. We are grateful so that we were a part of your life and have those memories to hold on to. You are missed each and every day. We love you.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you wake in the morning hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there, I did not die!

In Memory of Robert Richard McRill ~ (Debra Estep)

July 6, 2008

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Robert, but I am remembering

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I had seen an article in the paper but had not put 2 and 2 together. And even though we did not really know Bobby, I know from listening to Josh, what a wonderful person he was. There is no way to express the gratitude for what he and so many others have done for our country. And no way to express how sorry we are for what you and your family have had to sacrifice as well.May God comfort you all through this difficult time. Rest Easy, Bobby, you must be so proud of Cathy and your sons. They miss you, but are taking care of each other as you would want.

Sincere sympathy and love, Pat - R.N.

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!
