Gene was born June 28, 1931, to Gladwin and Gladys (Bach) McRill in Marshalltown, IA. He graduated with the class of 1949 from Albion High School.

On October 21, 1956, Gene married Burneta Springer at Bethel Grove Christian Church. They lived on the family farm near Albion where they raised their four children. Gene farmed and worked at the local grain elevator.

In 1969, Gene joined his mother, Gladys, at Iowa Valley Mutual Insurance. He spent nearly 50 years with Iowa Valley Mutual, starting as an agent, and retired as the Director/Manager. He partnered with Ray Stowell to form McRill-Stowell Insurance Agency.

Gene was involved in nearly everything that happened in Albion. He was active in the Pro-Gos Club, Albion Lions Club, ACTS, and others. He was on the Board of the Heart of Iowa Telephone Cooperative, as well as a Director of the South Hardin Recreation Center.

Gene loved his church, Albion United Methodist, where he served wherever needed. He was a Sunday School teacher, sang in the choir, served on the Administrative Board, the Board of Trustees, and many more. He lived his faith through service to others.

Gene is survived by his wife of 68 years, Burneta; his children: Gail McRill (Scott Sund) of Walcott, IA, Evan (Sandy) McRill of Albion, Emery (Connie) McRill of Woodbine, MD, and Melinda (John) Ruopp of Green Mountain, IA; 4 grandsons: Jared (Chelsea), Ryan (Kay), Isaak Sund (Robert Long), and Noah (Claire) Sund.
