SPRING HILL - A 20-year-old Bronze Star-winning paratrooper from Spring Hill died Sunday when his guard position was struck by a rocket propelled grenade near Baghdad.
Pfc. Cody C. Grater was a vehicle driver with the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division.
“Our son died doing what he was proud of,” Larry L. Decker and Anita D. Lewis, his stepfather and mother, said in a statement. “It was his goal to make the Army his career, which he loved. He was proud of serving his country.”
Grater has received the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and the Combat Action Badge.
His unit will hold a memorial service in Iraq on Friday.
Grater, who joined the Army in April 2006, finished Motor Transport Operator Advanced Individual Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., a month later.
He reported to his division in August 2006 and was assigned to the 407th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team.
“Pfc. Cody Grater was an exemplary soldier in the 82nd Airborne Division,” said Lt. Jason Gardel, rear detachment commander of 2nd Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team. “He served his country honorably and will long be remembered by his leaders and fellow paratroopers.
“He was eager to learn and excelled at all aspects of his chosen profession. Pfc. Grater always went the extra mile to help out his comrades.”

It So Sad When We Lose Loved Ones & Fellow Brothers And Sisters Overseas, But It Is Such An Honor To Know That Our Brave Men And Women Were So Caring, Loving And Selfless To Protect The Country We Proudly Live In. Words Can Not Express From The Heart What Is Like For Us For The Sacrifice We Give As Family And Friends And Even More It Can Not Express The Depth Of Sadness And Heartache It Brings Within Our Hearts When We Lose That Special Loved One. But Please, Know You Will Never Be Forgotten For Your Heart And The Battle Was Still Won That Day You Went Home.
Dear, Family & Friends
Know That He Made It To Those Heavenly Gates And Inside Them His Fellow Family And Friends Awaited Him With Jesus With Arms Opened Wide To Greet Him And Know That Even Though He Would Have Loved To Be Here Today To Tell You What It Meant To Him How Patient Your Hearts Were To Him And The Prayers That You Have Said For Him
He Is Watching Over You Day And Night Whispering In This Summer Breeze That He Loves Each Of You Very Much And Not A Day Goes By That He Doesn't Think Of You As You Do Of Him.
May God Give Each And Everyone Of You Strength In Times That You Feel Weak, Hope When Life Seems Dim And Love In Times That You May Ever Feel Alone Or Lost And Comfort In Times When Your Heartaches May He Wrap You In His Warm Presence With A Spiritual Hug And Kiss.
Love, Your Sister In Christ

To the family of PFC. Cody Grater:
I want to thank your family and Cody for the ultimate sacrifice that was given to defend this great country we live in. I was honored to represent PFC.Grater in the 2nd annual "Run For The Fallen" put on by the Tampa Area Marine Parents Association on August 23,2009 in Ruskin FL. He is truly an American hero. While I have a young Marine son over in Afghanistan right now with the 2/8 Echo, I can't imagine what your family has been through. My thoughts and prayers were with you last sunday and are with you now for your sacrifices. Take care and may God Bless you.

cody it's so hard to believe it has been a year since you have been gone. i remember the night before you left and i borrowed 30 dollars from you; said that i didnt have to pay you back especially since you were leaving for iraq the next day. then i said well now you have to come back so i can pay you the 30 i owe you. i think about that everyday cause those are the last words we spoke to each other and i feel so guilty in a way, because i said you have to come back... well i'll tell you what i still have that 30 dollars in my wallet and im not spending it till the next time i come see you so i can give it to you someday. i love you Cody and you are always in my thoughts.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Cody, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
