I'd like to send my sincerest condolences to the Daugherty Family: to his parents for the loss of their son, to his siblings for the loss of their brother (Richard & I became friends for a while after Steven joined the Navy), and to his son for the loss of his father. I know it's been several years, but honestly, it still feels like I just found out.
Steven was my brother Phillip's best friend in middle school when we lived in Barstow. They stayed in touch after Phil went high school in NM, then college in IL, but lost contact after Phil moved back to NM, a few months before Steven joined the Navy.
Steven & I became friends after running into each other all the time at the movie theater and a movie rental place when I was a junior & senior in high school. He always asked about Phil when he found out I was his sister. We talked about a lot of things, but mostly movies and Phil. Honestly, our talks kept me grounded in a time of personal chaos. I'm sorry I never got to tell him what our friendship did for me.
I have no doubt that Steven touched the hearts and minds of a lot of people. From my experience, he was just that kind of person. I'll never forget him and I'll always miss him. Thank you so much, Steven, for your service and for your friendship.
Always,
Andra

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Daugherty Family know that we have made a small donation to the Lt. Oh, our precious friend Steven who was taken away from us too soon. We miss you so much and my heart aches that your son will never know exactly how wonderful and special his father really was. I know you are watching over him and will keep him safe. God bless you and we will always remember you, always...

The greatest and only memory that I have of Steve is that he always called me Macy Gray...This of course was not a term of endearment and irritated me to no end...Thank you Steve for teaching me how to have think skin and how to deal with "Navy guys"! I wish there were more like you around...

I Just recently found out about Steven's passing. I knew him in High School. We were in Spanish together. He made it fun. We started a friendship that lasted years. He could always make me smile and laugh when I was down. Even though we will miss him here on Earth, I know he is in Heaven smiling down on us. Protecting us. I will see him again one day in Heaven. Thank you Steve you have changed my life without even knowing it.

To the entire Daugherty family. We still think of you often and often think how you are coping and how Steven Jr. is doing. I know he is growing up learning about his father in such an unnatural manner. He is still loved and missed and even though we only post at certain times of the year, Steve is thought about often, especially at Thanksgiving. That is the last time we saw him and had dinner together. Very fond memories; I wish I had pictures of that day. God bless your family.

To the family of Steven Daugherty, I went to A school in Pensacola with Steven and i kept in touch with him when he went to the Oscar Austin, we emailed back and forth but over the years we lost contact. But there wasn't a time when i didn't wonder how is Steve doing i wonder where he's at. I will always remember Steve as a funny charismatic down to earth sweet kind of guy. Whenever i think of him all i can do is smile because i have nothing but good memories of him & how he would always make me laugh. I miss him soo much and i cant believe he is gone but his legacy lives on in all hearts. You are not forgotten Steven & i love & miss you dearly my friend.

Steve,
It has been awhile since you left this earth and flew away but yet I can still remember you and our conversations as if it was yesterday. I met Steve at NSGA Norfolk when I was a little Seaman working in the admin office. You always brought fun to the building. The last time I saw you was when you left for that second trip back out there. When I read the Navy times back in 07 and saw your name I made so many phone calls because I didn't believe it. You are STILL truley missed. You were a great friend and would always speak to me about your son. Our boys were the same age and we would always talk about their milestones. When my time is up Steve I will see you and that huge smile. God bless your family from mine.

The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Steven, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Steve, I miss you so much. Sometimes it doesn't even feel real. The other day I was thinking about something we did together and couldn't quite remember everything about that day, so I thought to myself, remember to call him later and ask him. I can't call you. To the Hulk (with muscles)! I've been so blessed to have been able to call you a friend. You've been such a guiding light to so many. Never in a million years did I think that I'd be writing these words to you, nor getting a sunburn from standing outside by your grave for hours, but every memory, inspiration or lessoned learned made it worth it. I never came out and told you how much I admire you, but I think you knew all along. I'll miss trips to the beach, gym, grocery store, Bruster's Ice Cream or simply making fun of you over our email accounts! We were quite the fake adversaries weren't we? Hey maybe our little plan of little Steven and Samantha crossing paths in the future will happen! Who knows. They'll give each other a run for their money too. Well Steven, I miss you buddy. I was able to get a hold of your brother and mother. I can see where you get your personality from. You've got your mothers kindness, and share that tough guy attitude with your brother. From your father perhaps? I'm sure. Either way I love it!! I hope to be here for your family, if I can be of assistance. You would have done the same for me. You were a brave and strong person, but let’s face it, I still stomped you... or maybe, I almost did once, I think! On a serious note, allow me to say this. You are a prime example of what makes America such a wonderful country. Your sincerity, honor, valor, integrity, bravery, strength and benevolence are the very virtues on which our country was built. I'm so proud of you Steven. God bless.

Although I never met your son, my daughter SSgt Keelye Blackmore dated Richard for a while and she spoke of him. It is such a tragedy when we lose a soldier and it becomes more personal when you know of them from an extended member. No words can ease your grief. However, with that being said "Live Your Life in Honor of His Life". Support what he stood for and never let his Light be extinguished. I seen a memorial in our home town that said "All Gave Some, Some Gave All". I think this says it all. Too you and your family may God Bless You and may you sense HIS Peace during the days ahead. If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised LE RON A. To All Parents
“I’ll lend you for a little time a child of Mine,” He said.
“For you to love the While he lives and mourn for when he’s dead.
It may be six or seven years, or 22 or three,
But will you, till I call him back, take care of him for me?
He’ll bring his charms to gladden you, and shall his stay be brief.
You’ll have his lovely memories as solace and relief.
“I cannot promise he will stay, since all from earth return,
But there are some lessons taught down there I want this child to learn.
I’ve looked the wide world over in my search for teachers true
And from the throngs that crowd life’s lanes I have selected you.
Now will you give him all your love, nor think the labor vain,
Nor hate Me when I come to take him back again?”
For all the joy Thy child shall bring, the risk of grief we’ll run.
We’ll shelter him with tenderness, we’ll love him while we may
And for the happiness we’ve known forever grateful stay;
But shall the angels call for him much sooner than we’ve planned.
We’ll brave the bitter grief that comes and try to understand.”

CTT1 Daugherty didn't have to volunteer for the extra risk involved with working as a tactical communications technician, he just went out and did it anyway. Even though I didn't know him, I am extremely proud to have served with him. His family should be very proud of him as well.

I served with Daugherty at NSGA Norfolk. I can't seem to put a face on him right now, but I remember his name. It was a while ago that I served with him. It saddens me to hear when one of our own passes but this was written by a very good friend of mine who I also served with regarding PO1 Daugherty. " I was stationed with Steve in both Pensacola and in Norfolk. We spent roughly 4 years stationed together. It rips you apart when you hear a name that you actually know and can say you were friends with. At the same time, remembering Steve, he wouldn't want anyone to dwell on the fact that he's no longer around. He loved being in the Navy and he loved the job he did. All I can say is that knowing him like I did, he'd want everyone to go have a beer and be sure to have one for him too! For those of us that were stationed with him in Pensacola and/or Norfolk, you know I'm right."

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

Steve, you will be greatly missed by all that knew you. I still remember you making fun of my mom's brussel sprouts at Thanksgiving. The world is missing out on the company of a great man and father, God bless you and your family. It is still a shock knowing we will no longer hear your jokes and laughter.
