Today, I was honored to run In honor of Private First Class David H. Sharrett II, as part of the Wear Blue: Run to Remember Memorial Day tribute. I have read the story of his death, the true story, and I am grateful for his service and sacrifice. I hope his family takes comfort in knowing that he has not been forgotten. May he Rest In Peace. Dave, I went to your son's grave today, Memorial Day, and placed the white and purple flowers there for him. I lost another one of my soldiers in Afghanistan this past November 13th. His name was Chris Coffland. I delivered his eulogy, which was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. There are too many of my brothers in that place, and your son is still in my mind and heart every day, with each of them.
I speak of Dave, and his story--all of it--to my young soldiers and young officers. I hope that it can instill in them the caution, prudence, and courage they need, to prevent history from repeating itself. Dave continues to make a difference, and he helps me pass this lesson on to every soldier with which I train and deploy. I am thinking of you and your family, and hoping that you can find solace.

I have not seen dave since 2005 or 2006...we had talked a few times and I knew he was going to Iraq. I only just learned of Dave's passing. Dave was a wonderful person, with such a bright smile that would light up a room. Dave was a real stand-up guy, and anyone who knew him was proud to call him friend. I only wish that I learned of this sooner. Dave, you are a true hero, and may your soul rest in the hands of God

A few days back, I searched the internet for your email address and came across the heartrending news clips of Dave’s passing, which was extremely upsetting. I’ve always remembered you as one of the happiest persons who would stand in the halls with the biggest and brightest smiles throwing little sermons at the students passing by . But now, as I write this, I cannot even imagine the toll this event would have taken on your life.

I met Dave back in 2004 and I liked him from the first time I met him. We would talk about what he wanted to do with his life. I tried to get him to come and work a the Fairfax County Sheriffs Office but he always talked about wanting to fight for his country. He will be missed,one of the best people I have ever met.

My heart and prayers go out to you and your family. I was actually just trying to reach you to thank you for everything you taught me and how much better prepared for life I was as your student. I recall how you lit up when you spoke about Bean. You and I went on the Langley High School trip to Europe together, where I took photos that my wife was in. She was on a similar trip in the same cities through her school in Staten Island. Only we didn't meet until 11 years later when I went to work in New York. We didn't learn about the photos until after we were married. How crazy is that? Of all the teachers I have had, I only fondly remember a few. I am happy to see the Postal Service, where I now work as a senior executive, renamed Oakton Post Office after your son. He made the ultimate sacrifice. God bless you and best wishes.

To the family and friends who knew and loved David H. Sharrett, my deepest sympathies and prays go out to you all. I had the honor of meeting his Uncle and God Father here in Grapevine TX last night and hearing of David. I don’t wish to speak of myself in this, but I find in profound how close vicinity that we lived yet I never knew him. I grew up in Vienna VA a stone’s throw from Oakton, and went to Northern Virginia Community College. Served with the 101st during the first Gulf War, and spent time in Taji Iraq and Balad Iraq from Aug 2005 to Dec 2006 under contract working on Apache Longbows. I’m proud to say that David’s footprint was much larger than mine in the Middle East. Our solders that go outside the wire into harm’s way to provide freedom to the true Iraqis, and to the citizens of the United States are matched by no one else. No matter what the media says, these brave young men and women are loved and appreciated by people worldwide. They have made a difference to our safety and continued freedom here in the United States. May you rejoice in the time you spent with David and know that you see him again. If there is every anything I can do for your family, don’t hesitate to ask.

Oakton High School retired Dave's jersey and number at a pre-game ceremony on Friday night. A permanent memorial was also dedicated at the entrance to the football field in front of the flag pole. There was a nice story on NBC channel 4 with some clips of Dave in action from high school.

Mr. Sharrett, I just saw the segment on the local news today about the death of your son. You were my teacher as well as all of my sisters at Langley High School - we would all trade stories about you and how much fun you made learning for us. From that guitar you had to the episodes of Archie Bunkner! I did not know your son but I will always remember how much you lit up when you talked about Bean. I am very sorry for your loss. I am PFC Lange. I am currently stationed in Baumholder, Germany. I went to basic training in Fort Benning with David. I just learned of his passing a few days ago. I was shocked. David was a leader who had integrity and everyone had great respect for him. He always stood up for people and treated everyone with respect. He was a good soldier and a great person. I am so sorry to hear the news about Bean, I remember you and Bean coming to our house for brunch while my sister Lisa was in your class. Bean and our younger brothers were playing with little GI Joes in the backyard, when Bean tried to make the GI Joe helicopter fly. Our youngest brother was upset when it did not fly very well off of the deck and broke its rotor on landing, but Bean thought it was the funniest thing in the world. He must have been four or five at the time. Hearing about Bean through Lisa and when my locker was right next to your classroom always brought a little joy to my heart. He is a hero who gave the ultimate sacrifice protecting America and working to bring freedom to the world.

Dave and Vicki -- I was so very sorry to hear of your son, David being killed in Iraq. I have thought of your family many times over the last 9 years or so we have been out of touch. My heart nearly broke when I saw you on Utube in the Channel 9 segment.

Dave and I played together in football at Oakton. He was intense both on and off the field. We worked together at Champp's in Reston and stayed friends without really keeping in touch. I served in the Marines and fought on the same battlefield as him, he is my brother, and a huge loss to our country and of course his family and friends. I played tight end and absolutely hated when the plays called for me to block him in practice. We were pretty good friends but when the whistle blew that meant nothing to him, ha. He was that intense and it was great. There is NOBODY that I would rather have out there defending the greatest country on earth than Dave Sharrett. It was no surprise to me today during the service and the ceremony when I heard about his leadership and intensity on the battlefield and the way he made his fellow soldiers laugh. I am proud to have been his teammate and friend.
Number 55, thank you for your sacrifice. You are a true hero and your high school teammates, friends, and your entire country have the utmost respect and admiration for your courage, patriotism and heroism. My thoughts and prayers are with you, your unit, and your family and friends. God Bless you and The United States of America.

Mr. Sharrett- you had a significant impact on me as an amazing English Teacher. As an educator, I hope to make a difference with my students as you have made with my life. Thank you!! I remember "bean" in our classroom and how you loved him as a father. That influence stuck with me.

Dear Dave,
I just heard about Bean today. I'm so sorry for your loss. I remember him in your English class when your wife would bring him in, and you would play the guitar. You have made such a great impact on my life--our conversations, your teaching will always be with me.
Dave, I'm also sorry that he and I were never able to have the conversation you wanted me to have with him before he joined. So bitter is the irony of these words we spoke so many times before:

Dave and I began working together in 2002, and my favorite memory of him is that we would sing 99 red balloons at karaoke. Every time I changed jobs I always found him a spot either as a doorman or bartender. He always was a great listener when times were bad for me and always made me laugh or smile when I most needed it. His kindness and great heart will be sorely missed in this world. And everytime I hear "our song" I will cherish the memories. God Bless.

We don't get to see you all often any more but we were deeply saddened by the news of the death of your son and brother. It wasn't long ago that we were dealing with the loss of our good friend Thomas Wilson and now the war has hit home again. I was so sad to hear the news about "Bean" and remember that cute little boy coming into the classroom many years ago. Mr. Sharrett, I remember the way your face would light up when you would talk about him or see him. What a wonderful rolemodel and father you were to him! Kim, I'm so sorry for your loss. I keep remembering the first time I met Bean, he was about 2 years old and he was playing with a padlock when he suddenly threw it and got me right between the eyes! Had a heck of an arm for 2 years old! Try not to be sad - he's safe in Heaven now, surrounded by Peace and Love. May God bless and comfort you.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. To All David's Family,
I never knew David but I worked in the C-130's and had the pleasure of meeting his father-in-law, Alva Shell. I hope all of you take comfort in the fact that he loved you.Just from reading all of these posts I can tell that he was also much loved. Sounds to me like he was an extremely loving and caring soul. There are angels put on this Earth to make our lives brighter and I believe that one of them was David. David paid the ultimate price fighting for what he believed in, his country. There is no greater love for mankind as this. Please remember that he lives on in the hearts of all those that he loved and that loved him. Let the tears flow now to help ease your sorrow and later let the smiles come as you remember David's life and all he accomplished in the short time he had on Earth. David now resides in a peaceful place without pain. He is not alone, and I am sure he was welcomed with arms wide open by the many military brothers that have gone on before him. I know he is watching over each and every one of you. From one military family to another, all of you are in my thoughts and prayers. David will always be one of America's greatest heros because he gave his life so that millions of lives may live free.

We are thinking of the Sharrett family. I went to Oakton elementary with David and we were in Mrs. Russell's class together. He was a great friend, and the only 12 year-old I knew who understood the significance of an elephant and a donkey. I remember watching David play pee-wee football in Vienna and my dad remarking at how talented he was. Ryan went to Oakton High School with David and remembers him as a fun loving guy with a kind word for everyone. The Sharrett family is in our prayers.

I am deeply saddened by this news. I came to know Dave years ago when he came to me and asked me for a job a Champps many years ago. We bonded from that day forward. I have been working at the Champps in fair oaks and Dave would always come and see me. I would so proud of him. His ambition to become a man was enthusiastic. I loved our conversations and now those are gone. He will be in my thoughts and prayers every day. Nothing I can say can ease your pain, but just remenber he was very special to me.
