I first met Eric in the late 90's at Officer Candidates School, Quantico Va. We immediately became good friends. Eric was the type of guy everyone liked. He was easy to get along with and was a very down to earth guy. I know that he's in a better place and I think of him often. I had the pleasure of running into Eric all throughout our time in the Marine Corps, OCS, flight school, OIF, and finally TACP school. We would occasionally correspond through email and or phone call to see how each other were doing, I miss this. I had the pleasure of buying him dinner on the vacation he took before his last deployment to OEF. I will always remember him and feel priviledged to have known him in this life. God bless you brother, Semper Fi.

We knew of each other growing up! Our dad's serve in the Marine Corps together and always keep in touch! You left me to early in life and I am not happy about that!! Now, your dad is sick and is going to met you in heaven!!! I am glad you and your dad will be back together but it is unfair that you both left us. I may sound selfish but I rather have you here with me!!! LOVE YOU ALWAYS AND FOREVER!!!

Don and Joy,
I served with Eric in 2nd platoon Bravo Co. 1st Battalion 6th Marines. When I met Eric he was one of the "Salty" Lance Corporals in my platoon. Eric was one of those older Marines that would take us boots and really get to know us. He was a very hard working Marine. I will always remember my friendship with him. When I heard of his death, I called another Marine (Mike Luther) that also was in our platoon, and we made immediate arrangement to be at his funeral. We were there with you and your family. We both wanted to say something to you both but we had no idea what to say. It had not sank in that we lost our brother until at the Cemetary when taps was played that I looked to Mike and realized that we were both crying. He was really gone. To this day I have Eric's obituary hanging in my locker at work so that everyday I open it, I look at his pic and am reminded to carry on. Eric was and will always be a driving force in my day to day life. God bless you

To to family of Eric Terhune,
I never knew this man you loved so much and must ache without. I saw a tribute to him on the Enjoying The Small Things blog and was so moved. So while I never knew your Eric, please except my heartfelt sympathy for your family. I sob as I write this and look at the flag flying near by and am overcome with gratitude for the freedom I have because of service men and women just like Eric. I am a momma who never lets my children forgot our troops and their families in our prayers; teaches them to salute and honor the flag; to walk up to every soldier they see in our military town and say thank you. So from a mother in Utah who sleeps safe with her family because of soldiers like Eric ... I am deeply sorry for your loss and will keep you in my prayers. God bless.

I served briefly with Capt. Terhune aboard the USS Denver in 2007. He taught me and other Marine grunts Close Air Support while enroute to Iraq. I can safely say his heart was in the right place. He was committed to looking after his guys, and teaching us as much as he could to better our success. He even gave a friend of mine, a boot LCpl, a couple small pieces of gear that he didn't need. Those that know the way of life we had, that was uncommon to say the least for a Capt. outside of his chain of command to go out of his way to help like that. I'm a bit of a nerd and he gladly spent extra time with me to comprehend the entirety of his class. I didn't know him personally but I had nothing but respect for him. I'm truly sad he is gone. I'm tired of war and I'm tired of good people dying. I was a Cpl with 3/1 India, 0311 rifleman.

I am deeply saddened to hear about the loss of Eric. I was one of his flight instructors at HT-18. The last two flights I flew as an instructor were with Eric. The last one was a safe-for-solo check ride. He was a very good flight student and I remember he earned an Above Average grade for his solo check flight. He had a good attitude and solid pilot skills. He was one Student Naval Aviator I knew would not have difficulty getting his wings of gold.

to the terhune family,

Eric's death has impacted my life very hard. From the first time we met he became my mentor and I could only strive to try and become half the man eric was. Through the marines eric has always been there for me to tell me keep going, you're doing great, and one of the last things he told me is how proud of me he was..
The truth is eric is like a father to me..

My condolences to you and your family..

I did not know Capt. Terhune very well, but some Marines I was close with did, and they had very high opinions of him. One thing I did know about him is that he would never ask someone to do something that he was not willing to do. That is the kind of leadership, the kind of Marine that the Corps needs. RIP

I just learned of Eric's passing through the MSU Alumni Newsletter. I was on the MSU Rifle Team with Eric and remember him as a positive force of nature, with a quick laugh, a love of good music (he always borrowed my Ramones CD on trips), and a heart of gold that shone so brilliantly you couldn’t miss it. I am so deeply saddened to think of a world without Eric and will remember him for the hero that he his.

I definitely would like to express my condolences to the Terhune family. I had the pleasure of working and flying with 1stLt and then Capt Terhune at HMH-466. He was definitely a Marine's Marine, and Officer, and most importantly...a gentleman. After his head injury he definitely made the quickest comeback possibly in human history and was running a full PFT shortly thereafter (in the amazement of all the Marines)! Most importantly (to me at least) is that he always took the time to see how the Marines were doing and what he could do for them. That showed just how genuine of a person and leader he really was! I would feel better with him in the cockpit, but I am content knowing that he is always watching over us and our flight paths! Semper Fidelis! --SSgt Humphries

Dear Paul and Carleen,

It was with shock and sadness that I learned of your loss in the recent issue of Farragut's REVEILLE publication.

Paul, knowing you from Farragut, I am not surprised to learn of Eric's accomplishments and dedication to duty. You raised a fine young man and patriot. Trust me, his service to this great nation will not be in vain. As one who is acutely aware of the threat to the United States in these troubled times, I sincerely appreciate his valiant efforts to keep us safe now and in the future.

My most sincere condolences and gratitude.

I served with Eric at The Basic School though we were in different platoons. Eric was one of the handful of officers that stands out in my memories as the most professional and willing to share his experience with the younger guys fresh out of college. I'll never forget the way he grinned with that massive wad of chewing tobacco. Terhune was one of a kind, and now he's in good company with many of our other fallen classmates and brothers.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Terhune,
I am very saddened to hear of the loss of Eric in Afghanistan. Eric and I were in the same boot camp platoon (1077) at Parris Island in 1993, and later were both CH-53E pilots based out of Miramar, although in different squadrons. He was a great man! Some things that I remember from boot camp was that he was an excellent shot with the rifle, always had the shiniest boots out of all of us, and was always willing to get "quarterdecked" along with anyone else who was getting extra incentive physical training from the Drill Instructors. Crossed paths with him again several years later out in Iraq, when we discovered that we both had become CH-53E pilots and his squadron was turning over with mine at Al Asad. The injury that took him off flight status did not dampen his personality a bit, he was looking forward to serving the Corps as a FAC until he could get back flying again. I can only echo what many others have already said, that he was a tough, fun-loving, and devout man, and I will miss him.

I am sorry for the great loss that the Terhune family has had to endure. Your son was a true patriot.

I served with Capt Terhune in Iraq with HMH-466 and was immediately impressed with his ability to effectively lead and mentor his junior Marines. He was first and foremost an Officer and secondly a pilot. There was never a day when I didn't see a smile on his face or hear him laughing when he entered the Operations Department. His sacrifice for our great country will never be forgotten. He is an American hero and a true patriot. I only wish that others in our society had his sense of loyalty and love for his God, country, and family. Rest in peace Sir, you will never be forgotten. Semper Fi.

Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

I can't say anything about Eric that you all don't all ready know. I served with him in HMH 466. He is a great Marine. I can remember rooming with him in Yuma Arizona and waking up to him doing free standing hand stand push ups in the middle of the room. I was like Eric what are you doing. When I got divorced he was over my apartment everyday helping me move. He would do anything for his friends. I remember he went to an air show and he bought me a dicast metal model of a CH-53. He was like I don't know anyone who likes this helicopter more than you so I want you to have it. I was blown away. I had lunch with Eric at BK two days before I left for Japan. He had only been back from his previous deployment for a couple of weeks. I was still in Japan when Eric was killed. He will be missed greatly. I know that he is doing all he can right now to watch over the rest of us left behind on this earth. God speed Eric we will see you soon.

To Eric's family, I can't pretend to know what you are going through, but for what it's worth Eric was loved by all who knew him.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I only Met Eric a few times, and that was when I was a young boy hanging out at Dr. and Mrs. Terhunes house. But I can say that the personality of Eric, is one that makes you never forget him. He was a good man, and I know he will be missed by many. He will never be forgotten.

I want to extend my deepest sympathies for your great loss. I had the privilege of serving with Eric in the Wolfpack for two years. I will always remember Eric for his strength of character and positive influence on everyone he encountered. It was truly an inspiration to witness the energy and dedication Eric brought to every single day regardless of the circumstances. He will be remembered fondly.
Sincerely,

Last night I was notified of Eric's passing, and even as I type this, it is difficult to hold back the tears and pain I feel. We met back in high school, at Wheaton Christian and quickly became best of friends. My parents took Eric in as a host student, and he quickly became part of our immediate family. Eric and I formed a close bond, and today I still think of him as my brother. I remember him as a dedicated, caring, and both physically and spiritually strong person who I could only strive to emulate. As young teens, we went camping in the Canadian Wilderness one summer where I sustained a severe injury to my leg. Although we were days away from civilization, Eric tended to my wounds, carried me, our packs, and a canoe on his back until I could get to an emergency room for treatment. This is just a one example Eric's character and the type of person that would become one of finest men I have ever had the privilege to know.

To Eric: I love you brother, I miss you, and will never forget you or your sacrifice. I honor you as my hero, and brother in arms. Until we meet again - Semper FI.

To Dan, Joy, Paul, Dave & family:
My heart bleeds as I mourn your loss. I don't know what words I could say other than to say thank you for giving me the opportunity, privilege, and honor to have known Eric and be a part of your lives.

Eric was a brother to me among my biological brothers. He came to live with us during his High School years while attending Wheaton Academy. I seem to recall my oldest brother (8 years older) David bringing him home to ask my parents if we could keep him. My parents thankfully said yes and he stayed with us. We turned our basement of our townhouse on blackburn st. into his bedroom. Both Eric and my brother did wrestling at the Academy while they were there. Both him and Dave seemed inseparable. What I do remember best though is when Eric joined the Marines and left our home. He went through basic training in South Carolina at Paris Island. My family took a trip out to see him at his graduation. I recall his drill instructor (DI) commenting that of all his men, he could not break Eric. normally they would break the men down just to build them back up, but not Eric. Eric played mind games back with his DI, including games he himself didn't know before. Eric would often vollunteer for the punishments of his fellow men to the point the DI would refuse to let Eric do them, but instead would choose the man standing next to him and make him do the push ups. It appears that Erics vollunteering had no ends. From vollunteering to clean my plate as a picky eater 11 years younger then him, to his antics during basic training, to vollunteering for others on the battlefield. He truly was a Kaphale (Greek - military head), he as a soldier knew this well as he served Christ the head of the church. It was my fond hope to reconnect with my long lost brother upon my ordination at the Seminary here in IN. where he would be able to meet his niece and nephew Dylan and Evie, and my lovly wife Jennifer. Unfortunately he has been stolen away for a time being as he rests folded as a dear lamb to the breast of Christ. As a seminary student you write and preach at times, and this past Sunday I was able to preach my first sermon on Matthew 11:25-30. It would appear that the Lord was at work in preaching to myself as well as I think upon Eric and his death. I had only wished I had been able to get in touch with him and Paul sooner. Eric has come into the fold of Christ, and is no longer a Prisoner of hope as Zechariah would say, but now sees our dear Lord Face to Face. I will surely miss Eric, I only wish he knew how much I miss him and continued to think of him through the years after he left our home in Wheaton IL.

It was an honor to serve with such a great person. I served with Capt. Terhune in the HMH-466 Flightline. He was always so willing to understand what his Marines' responsibilities were. He wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty. I don't know if it was his background as a grunt or if it was more just his personality, but he was one of the most dedicated Marines that I served with in my five years. God bless you Sir and your family.

My deepest sympathy to you for your great loss the pain,grief and the feelings of helpness can seem unbearable that why we need to look to God's word for comfort at 2Corinthians 1:3,4 say Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus,the father of tender mercies and the God of all comfort,who comforts us in all our tribulation,that we may be able to comfort those in any sort of tribulation through the comfort with which we ourselves are being comforted by God.May these words comfort you at this time and the memories you hold so dear bring you much joy.

I never knew Eric, but I realized what an important part he was in the Terhune family when I went to Summer & Oliver's wedding. We all signed cards to encourage him, and as a fellow Serviceman and Christian, I recognized the isolation he must have been feeling at that moment. It surely has seemed clear that he knew this world was not his home, and he understood what real commitment, responsibility, honor, and Service were. I salute his well-invested life, pray for the comfort of the Holy Spirit for all the family, and trust he's had a better Homecoming parade than we could ever have provided.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I would also like to tell you about a website, http://groups.msn.com/SSPSoldierPor
traits/homepage,
where some wonderful people will make wood portraits of your fallen Hero for free for the immediate family. I became aware of this site when I wanted to do something special for Le Ron’s mother.

Dear Eric,
I love you! I now understand why you walked away. You thought I deserved more than what you could give me. But Eric how could I have ever asked for more than your love! That last day I saw you I tried to be so brave and not let any emotions show. How many times I wished I had ran after you to tell you and show you how much I loved you. I will always regret that, but I will always cherish your love and all the memories of our years together. I was so blessed and honored to be loved by you and to love you in return. I will never love another the way I love you. It breaks my heart to have to live in a world that you are no longer a part of. I am so proud of you! I love you Eric and will always. I'll never forget you.
Yours now and forever,
Brooke

Eric was a student of mine in Anatomy and Physiology and he also was a student in my Winter Ecology class in Wisconsin. The second trip to Wisconsin he was my assistant, I saw leadership skills that exceeded all my expectations! He was an outstanding leader. I am also privilaged to have had him in my home for meals and just relax in fellowship. I will miss his winsome smile and easy conversation.

I had the privilege of meeting Eric at Pensacola NAS where my parents are the Officer's Christian Fellowship Regional Directors. I haven't seen Eric in a long time but he left an indelible impact on me. I instantly liked Eric and his unparalleled patriotism was immediately without doubt. I am so grateful for Eric's sacrifice and am so happy to know that Eric is now with his heavenly father.

I was Eric's high school Principal and had the privilege of taking him on Guys campouts. Boy, did he love his knives and the outdoors. I knew he was going to make a great patriot. He was a little rough around the edges back then, but you knew he had a good heart. I am eternally thankful he got right with God. We will look forward to thanking him for his sacrifice when we meet again in heaven.

My Deepest Sympathies to your family on the loss of a great Marine, friend and a member of your family. I knew Capt Terhune when he was the FAC for 3/1 and myself I was the Battalion Comm Chief. He was always very down to earth and could make my day brighter with a quick smile or comment. He'll be missed but never forgotten. Semper Fi D-Ring!!

Although I did not know Eric, I feel connected. My son, Caleb, also a graduate of Wheaton Academy (2005), leaves for LDAC at Fort Lewis next week. He will graduate from Olivet Nazarene University in May, 2009, get commissioned a Second LT in the U.S. Army, and hopefully head out for additional training as a helicopter pilot. As you see, we are connected in several ways. Most importantly, my son is also a believer like Eric (the best connection). I look forward to thanking Eric for his service, his sacrifice, and his testimony when I meet him on the other side.
You are loved,

Tehune Family,

Eric was our fellow student at Wheaton Academy. We remember him as a courageous, strong young man with exceptional leadership capabilities. We are glad to know that he realized his potential in the military--a goal he esteemed highly even as a high schooler. God be with you in this difficult time.

It was a tremendous honor to serve with Eric during Operation Iraqi Freedom. His perseverance in studying and learning the intricate nature of flying a CH-53E was only a side-effect of his sincere character. He was as real as a man can get, as selfless as a Marine can be, and as Faithful as a Christian should be. I served with Eric in HMH-466; I prayed for him after he was flown to Germany when he hit the gate in Iraq; I saw how he treated people as equals in every respect. He was one of the good ones, he will be missed. He has gone ahead of us now to help prepare our way, and it would be my privilege and duty to someday tell all four of my children who he was...and why their father is a better man for having known him.
-Sincerely, Dave Womack, Captain, USMC and Family
