Anthony Luke Mason, 37, of Springtown, a Texas Army National Guard staff sergeant, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008, in a Chinook helicopter crash while supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom in Tallil, Iraq.
Funeral: 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, at First Baptist Church, 500 N. Main St., Springtown. Interment: Springtown Cemetery, with full military honors. Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at White's Funeral Home, 401 N. Main St., Springtown.
Memorials: A memorial fund has been established in Luke's name at all local branches of First Bank.
Anthony Luke Mason was born Oct. 19, 1970, to James Clyde and Mary Jean Boynton Mason.
Staff Sgt. Mason was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 149th Aviation, 36th Combat Aviation Brigade of the Texas Army National Guard, based in Grand Prairie.
Luke was preceded in death by his grandmother, Mary Irene Boynton (adoptive mother) of Azle, in 1992.
Survivors: Wife, Melanie Mason; daughters, Nikki, Jamie, Megan and Sarah Mason, all of Springtown; grandfather, Robert Boynton (adoptive father) of Azle; stepgrandparent, Anita Boynton; mother and stepfather, Mary Jean and Floyd Harmon of Agnes; father, James Mason; siblings, Annette Cihak and Wesley Mason, both of Azle; half brothers, J.B. and Ray Mason, both of Springtown; and a host of loving friends.

To all of the wonderful people who have written, thank you. I'm Annette Mason Cihak, Luke's younger sister. I can only now read what wonderful things everyone has written, even from people who didn't even know Luke. As for me I have a bigger view of Luke; he was a true big brother and picked on our younger brother Wes and I a lot. He felt it was his duty as a big brother, we just wouldn't turn out right otherwise. No matter how many fights we would get in, there is no doubt if I needed him he would be there for me. It was his country that needed him and he answered. I am proud of him and I love him and I am glad that was the last thing I told him. Our lives will be less without him in it, but he gave us so much while he was here. Just to see him with Melanie and his girls showed what a caring person he was and how much he loved them. I'm glad that he was able to give that to them and now they can give that to the rest of the world. I have such sorrow for all the families who lost loved ones that day and all the families who have lost in this time of war. I know Luke is looking down on us, and if I have to guess he's probably laughing. Prayers to all and God's love to help us all through.

I heard the story on the news and was so busy I did not stop to honor our soldiers properly, or I would have known sooner. You family is my family and Melanie is so very special to me. I am so sorry for the loss of Luke. While he may have been my brother-in-law, he was really the brother I never had. I couldn't be more proud of him and his service to our country. One can have no higher honor than to serve his country and its people. And Luke did so valiantly.

We are all so blessed by the time we had with Luke. We have so many wonderful memories that we will forever share. And for that we can be grateful. I pray the peace and comfort of God be with all of you in the days ahead. We will all be there for each other and lift each other up. Know that I will be there for you all.

You probably don't remember me but I remember you and Luke. I deployed with him last time but have since left the unit. I am currently stationed in Kuwait with a different unit based out of Utah. I've always admired Luke for his technical knowledge and his awesome and approachable character. He was a great person and it is a great loss to many that he is gone. He will be missed.
