Darrell Stevens Obituary

DARRELL W. STEVENS, 88, passed away on May 25, 2005 in the arms of his loving wife of 59 years, Marianne. He was also surrounded by his family. He was born on October 11, 1916, in Sioux City, Iowa. He began working for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in 1941, but left temporarily to enlist in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married his wife, Marianne Royer Stevens, on May 28, 1946, and returned to the telephone company after the war. He worked there a total of 44 years until his retirement in 1980, working over 20 years with perfect attendance. He was an avid golfer, shooting his lowest score of 68 on one of the many Houston golf courses he played regularly with his friends and family. Darrell loved children, and created a special relationship with his children, grandchildren and the children in the neighborhood, which will give them all special memories throughout their lives. He was also a prolific reader, found great pleasure in humor and debate, but mostly enjoyed dancing with his bride Marianne at every opportunity. Darrell is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marianne, as well as by three sons and a daughter and their spouses: Darrell Stevens and his wife Kay of Chico, California; Vance Stevens and his wife Bobbi who live in the United Arab Emirates; Michael Stevens and his wife Kim of Houston; and Leslie Stevens MacClean and her husband Chris of Austin. He also left surviving 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, William Royer and his wife Gayle of Katy. The family is very appreciative of the support given by their many friends and by the compassionate, loving and competent care given for many years by Mr. Stevens' physician, Doctor David Shin of Katy. They would also like to express their gratitude for the wonderful care given him by the nurses, staff, and doctors of Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital. Darrell asked that his body be given to Baylor College of Medicine for the purpose of research in the hopes that others will benefit from his death. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.

I will never forget how Darrell charmed the socks off of all the young ladies at my wedding to Vance. He continued to charm us all ever since, with his jokes, wit and laughter. I'll never able to set foot in Luby's without remembering Darrell!! There is an empty spot in our family now, but I am so glad to have known his love and experience his joy of life. He taught us all a lot. He will be sadly missed.

Imet Darrell & Maryann when myson Alex met Warren ,Darrell's grandson at school. Then I met Leslie,Chris& Emalie&subsequentlyMaryann & Darrell.I just love them both. They complement each other,Darrell with his relentless wit& Maryann with her sublime forbearance.I can't imagine one without the other. We only knew Darrell for a short time, but he had an endearing kind ofcontankerousnes that made you feel as if you had known him all your life.My son really liked and trusted him(a rarity.}We loved him & will remember him with his rakish hat,his punctuating pipe;that Devilmaycare glint in his eye.We are here if you need us.

Dear Pops,

I surely miss you very much.

You and Marianne were the most loving people. Thanks for those moments in time... I'll never forget them. Pops, thanks for being the first "father figure" in my life. You used to tuck Leslie and I into bed & kiss us on the forehead... thanks for those moments. A parent's love is a gift to us. I miss you, but I will never forget you.

Love, Brenda

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family in these trying times. I know Darrell was very close to my brother and I pray that he and Leslie find solace and pray for a speedy recovery for Marrianne.

I knew Darrell when I was just a child. He was such a tease and made me and my sister Laura gigle and laugh, took us for rides in his Model T and let us sit in the rumble seat. I have fond memories of Darrel, he brought so much happiness into our lives, he was a dear man. .I can still remember the smell of his pipe and the grin on his face. I send my deepest sympathy to all his family and love ones.

Well Dad you were right as usual.

On many occasions, even before you began feeling bad, our conversation would lead to "C'mon Chris..Im 80 (whatever) years old, for Godsake, we all gotta die.. and I've had a great run... very lucky!" You would then go on to say how you ecspecially worried about how Mom and Leslie would do when the enivitable happened. You cared so much and were always thinking of your family.

I will miss... our long chats on the patio, the smell of your burning pipe tobaco and scotch in your glass, your joke telling, the proud look in your eye when you spoke of your children and grand-children, the way you would express how you felt society was leaving people in need behind. Ill will also miss driving your red convertible miata with "My Fair Lady" Sound track blairing so loud while you yelled at me when to shift the gears and let up on the clutch.(Dad, I really did know how you know I owned a standard for ten years!)

Dad, you were a lover of people. The only thing you loved more than giving your opinion was prodding people, ANY way you could, to get them to speak passionately about what they believed in. You loved the debate.

I cant even begin to say how much I loved you and the profound effect you've had on me. I do find comfort however in knowing how much you loved me and my family, you expressed it in so many ways.

With Love,

Your "Favorite" Son-in-Law

Chris

My deepest sympathy to Marianne and family at the death of Darrell. My memories of him, though few, are sweet and bring a smile to my face. May he rest in peace with the knowledge that many loved him.
