Howard Carpenter Goff

Passed away early on Sunday, 7/17/2005, one day before his 79th birthday. Born in Woodside Long Island on 7/18/1926 to Herbert B. Goff and M. Ruth Carpenter Goff. The family moved to Attleboro, Massachusetts in 1939. He attended Attleboro High School, graduated in 1944 and immediately enlisted in the Army Air Corp. He served in Germany as editor of the "Fifth Wing" magazine, reaching the rank of Buck Sargeant. Honorably discharged in October 1946, Howard entered Babson Institute. He graduated with distinction in 1949, having continued his interest in writing by serving as the editor of the Babson Beaver Newspaper. Howard's business career began in Indonesia as an accountant for Standard Vacuum. He married Josette Kaloustian from Melrose Massachusetts in Singapore, and two of their sons were born in Indonesia. They moved to India in 1959, and then Hawaii in 1960. In 1962 Howard came to Connecticut to work for Mobil Oil in New York City. He was transferred to England in 1966 (just after a daughter and just before another son joined the family), became the Deputy Managing Director of the Iraq Petroleum Company in 1970, and was transferred to Saudi Arabia in 1974 to establish a presence for Mobil Oil in Jiddah. In 1977 he returned to England to the position of Director of Mobil Middle East. In 1983 he retired to Chatham on Cape Cod. Howard became very active with Babson College, establishing the Class of '49 Scholarship for needy and talented upperclassmen. He has served on the boards of the Chatham Drama Guild, Council on Aging, President of the Mobil Retirees Club, and volunteered to deliver for Meals on Wheels. Howard is survived by his wife of 54 years and four children; Rory (Gina), Andrew (Ann), Lisa (Steve), Alex (Jennifer), and four grandchildren. A celebration of his life will be held at The Nickerson Funeral Home at 87 Crowell Road, CHATHAM, MA, reception to follow, Saturday July 23, visiting hour begins at 10 am followed by a short service. Memorial donations may be made to Babson College, Class of 1949 Scholarship Fund.
