Was flitting thorough online and had recently run into an old friend in Portsmouth and started thinking about Paul and Sarah ... imagine my shock to see that Paul passed on and I didn't know about it. Truly never thought he would give up life for anything ... my thoughts are with you Sarah ... Brie and I have the fondest memories of staying on the 'island' with Ms. Mary. Give me a call.

Paul is the only person I've met who stayed at my favorite hotel in Katmandu, Nepal...the Yak and Yeti. But then, I'am not suprised.
Rest in peace...you lived a life!

Paul was larger than life to many of us who had the fortune of even meeting him shortly. He was interested by all he met and seldom talked of his own achievements. His humor in adversity and his eternal smile were the encouragement we so often need.
My condolences to all his loved ones.
He will be missed

So Paulie, you bring me to this quote...
"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"
Now if there is one person in all the world I could think of that has lived their life to the fullest no matter what, every single second of every single day, with the good bad and indifferent it would be you! You have inspired, traveled, loved, hoped, wished, smiled, helped, worn blue eye shadow for crying out loud (haha), faced your fears, been a great friend, laughed, flown, conquered mountains in vehicles, visualized, made things happen and so much more! Most importantly Paulie you've touched the lives of so many people and we are all so lucky to have known you and have you in our lives for the time we did.
All of the emails and conversations, which I still remember to this day, I often reflect back upon and they still give me that boost when I need it. I'm sure that is true for several of us. I miss you and will continue to miss you the rest of my life, but I get at least some peace of mind knowing that you lived...truly LIVED. You will be my constant reminder that that's exactly how I want to live my life. TO the FULLEST ever day no matter what. You had a great life Paulie...and I hate to see it cut short it. It hurts...literally. Just know that anyone who knew you is a better person because of you.
I admire you. I love you. I miss you.
With all my gratitude and so much thanks,
C S

Dear Paulie~
I miss you.... In a blink of an eye you were gone.... did you know how many people you inspired? Did you really know? You inspired my daughter's Lindsay and Jenny, my niece's Brittany, Casey, and Catherine my nephew Brandon, and me and my husband Eddie. One thing I have learned during this sad, sad time is, I know that you gave us all a gift... don't be afraid of living... capture life at its best! Don't waste time on things we cannot change, but to grasp life, to love, and to cherish. I open my eyes through the tears and you were gone.... forever in this life, that's the hardest part to deal with. I am going to miss your sweet ornery smile, your mischievous playful ways, but I will never miss you in my heart.
We will cherish your entire family.
Sally, I never had the pleasure of meeting you until recently, but Paul said to us, he had a sister and her name was Sally. That's my mom's name. I never forgot it. Sally's are terrific! That being said, I give my heart to you Sarah and to all of the Shaver Family, may you find comfort knowing how much Paul meant to all of us.
Much love,
Sue Erickson Goodrich aka: Tori's sister and Rex's sister-in-law

A legend has departed. What a guy! Over the events that Paul did with TWE we developed a seriously good relationship and spent lots of time just having a laugh. Paul never ever talked about all the good things he did for others, you had to really dig hard to get him to chat about that. He will be sorely missed by all of us, not just for his fun and humor but for his incredible competitiveness. You will be missed Paul but everyone at TWE will keep a very special memory of you.

Paul and I were born into the Shaver family 65 years ago, one month apart, and we played together as babies, toddlers, youngsters and teens. Through all the years, we were close friends as well as first cousins. His escapades throughout the world amazed us all - always wishing him safe journeys.
"Thank you, Paul, for always being there, these past 65 years. You were there for one of the happiest days of my life, when you married Robert and I, soaring high above the ocean east of St. Augustine, as captain of your aircraft. One of the saddest days of my life was driving through the midnight's darkness toward your and Sarah's home in Roanoke, just last week, to be there for you, one last time. A huge part of my life, the lives of all of those who knew and loved you, is gone, the void is bottomless, but cherished memories of happy times and lessons of human compassion will always remain. Thank you for being 'you'. See ya' wherever ya' are, sometime soon!"

Paul I still remember when you took my cousin Brittany and I out for a drive in Wyoming. We were in the middle of nowhere, with so many feet of snow around us, but I felt so safe when you were driving. I remember you talking about when you were growing up and the hardships you had endured to get where you were. I dont think you knew at the time how much you influenced the rest of my life. Looking at such an ambitious driven man made me realize thats how I wanted to truly be. I told you things in that car that I didnt want to be said again and you said you promised not to tell, and you didnt. I trusted you for your advice and I loved your great heart. That trip was still the best adventure I have ever been on. Thank you for everything, you will be truly missed. Rest in peace.

Sarah,
I was visiting my brother in Concord this weekend and took my kids to the Charlotte racetrack today. I was telling them about the time I was there with you and Paul, I showed them the scorekeepers box where he let me keep score for him, and how much fun I had in the "pits" with all of you.
As you can imagine I was shocked to read about Paul when I got home this afternoon. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

We were shocked to learn of Paul's death. Although it has been many years since we'd seen Paul, he remained in our thoughts. Paul took me to my high school prom, (class of '61) my boy friend, (Goose) was in college and since we were all such good friends, Paul became my date so I wouldn't miss my senior prom. My husband Walt (Goose) Carter (class of '58) and I will never forget all the wonderful times we had, not only at Warwick High School but also just hanging out on the corner in Hilton Village. Thoughts of Paul always brings a smile and a small wish that we were all back there once more, wearing pegged pants and smelling of Old Spice......Thanks Paul for the wonderful memories!!!
With deepest sympathy,
Susan and Walt

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.

God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
Take comfort in knowing that now you have a special guardian angel to watch over all of you.

Knowing Paul in the Hilton area in Newport News (Warwick really), he was always full of enthusiasm. After graduating from high school I lost contact with Paul until the high school reunions, I am sorry that I did not know Paul better. The reunions will never be the same. Life for him was all the fun you could squeeze from it. May God bless the family at this time of such a shocking and untimely loss.

When Suzette called me Monday morning with the incomprehensible news of Paul's tragic and untimely death, I felt sick to my stomach. How could this be? My old friend who was THE most daring, fun-loving, life-loving person I'd ever known was no longer with us? I was maddeningly shocked! I called my brother, Teddy, and we exchanged stories of our unforgettable adventures with Paul. As my anger slowly subsided, my heart filled with a great sadness. I was so looking forward to seeing him again soon...
Nags Head will never be the same for me; just as it was never the same after Paul and John moved there many years ago. Thank you, Paul, for all the good times. (Thanks for opening your home to me; and allowing me to teach Cecil how to brush his teeth in your bathroom! Thanks for the job at the OZ! Thanks for the birthday dinner with Pam.) Though you'll live on in our memories, in our hearts, in our stories, and in our photographs, you will be missed beyond words. May God bless your soul!
My heartfelt sympathies to his family, John, and to Sarah.
With love and prayers,

I haven't seen Paul in more than 20 years. he was a frequent visitor to my mothers busness, Franks Italian Restaurant. He lent me the money to buy my first car in 1964 when he worked for the bank (no cosigner, handshake only). He was a great guy and I always enjoyed listening to him talk to my mother about a great business opportunity in a place called Nags Head. My best to his family. I know he will be missed.

Paul, we will meet again.
It is the will of God and Nature that these mortal bodies be laid aside, when the soul is to enter into real life; 'tis rather an embrio state, a preparation for living; a man is not completely born until he be dead: Why then should we grieve that a new child is born among the immortals? ~Benjamin Franklin, 22 February 1756.

My heartfelt sympathy is extended to all of Paul's loved ones of family & friends-- indeed, an extensive list--from the Outer Banks and beyond. He was truly an amazing person who I will fondly recall as one of the first to give me my first real job upon my arrival to Nags Head back in the early '90s...I wrote the "Legend of the Black Pelican" for him when that beloved Kitty Hawk beach gathering place, The Black Pelican, was a mere eatery concept in Paul's fantastic imagination. Paul is a dynamic, generous, fearless individual who liked to involve all those fortunate to be around him in his endless energy for fun, fortune and overall LIFE. Everlasting CHEERS to you Paul--may you rest in peace and know that your "LEGEND" will always live on.

Paul built my parents house in Kitty Hawk back in the 70's and his house was across the street. He was larger than life and he reminded me of Richard Petty only smarter. He knew back then what the Outer Banks was to become. If there was ever a "Mr. Nags Head" it was Paul. Through his accomplishment, a lot of people were employed. I don't know anybody who didn't work for him at one time or another. Paul made me laugh and I always wished I had his energy and business accumen. The last time I saw him, he was holding court at Barrier Island. He will be missed. My condolences go out to all his friends and family. Rest peacefully Paul.

The years have kept us somewhat a part but the memories were never far from my thoughts. Paulie was a big part of the high school "party people" from Warwick High School that I grew up with. We have enjoyed him at every class reunion since graduation. He did not graduate with me but, always came and surprised the people at the reunions and brought smiles and cheer. I felt I could call him at any given time and he took the time to catch up on all the things happening in his world and mine. Just last September he drove up from Nags Head to Newport News to buy me a beer and give me a hug and kiss at my reunion and then returned to be with Sarah. My life is better for knowing and having him in it. Love, Patsy
