Bob Forsch Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 4, 2011.
ST. LOUIS (AP) - Bob Forsch, the only pitcher in St. Louis Cardinals history to throw two no-hitters, has died. He was 61.

Team spokesman Brian Bartow said Forsch, the third-winningest pitcher in franchise history, died Thursday at his home near Tampa, Fla. The cause of death wasn't immediately known.

The death came less than a week after Forsch threw out the first pitch at Game 7 of the World Series, a few hours before the Cardinals beat the Texas Rangers 6-2 to win the championship. Forsch was the stand-in for his longtime manager, Whitey Herzog, who is recovering from a fall that left him in a hospital for more than three weeks.

"I was supposed to throw out the first ball and was still on medicine, so they decided Forschie would do it," Herzog told the AP in a phone interview from his home in suburban St. Louis County. "We've kept in touch throughout the years. To drop dead like that, it's a real shock."

Forsch, a 6-foot-4 right-hander known for clutch performances in crucial games, played on three World Series teams in the 1980s under Herzog, and one of his three career postseason victories came against the Milwaukee Brewers in the Cardinals' 1982 World Series championship.

Forsch won 20 games in 1977 and twice was a 15-game winner, and had a career record of 168-136 with a 3.76 ERA. Forsch was an accomplished hitter, too, with a .213 career average and 12 home runs.

"We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Bob Forsch," chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said. "Bob was a one of the best pitchers in the history of our organization and a valued member of the Cardinals family."

Forsch, who was a 26th-round draft pick of St. Louis in 1968, threw no-hitters in 1978 (Phillies) and 1983 (Expos). His older brother, Ken Forsch, threw a no-hitter for the Astros in 1979, making them the only brothers in major league history to pitch official no-hitters.

The younger Forsch is one of only 30 major league pitchers to throw at least two no-hitters, according to STATS LLC. His were the only two thrown at old Busch Stadium, where he won more games and pitched more innings than any other pitcher. In all, he won 163 games for the Cardinals from 1974 to 1988, trailing only Bob Gibson and Jesse Haines. He finished his career with the Astros in 1989.

Herzog said Forsch was well-liked for his bulldog toughness on the mound, and off the field as well. Herzog also said Forsch was one of the more sensible players on his roster.

"I was fortunate to have Bobby on my team," Herzog said. "He never missed a turn, pitched 200 innings each year. He'd take the ball, and he was a great competitor."

The last three years, Forsch was the pitching coach for the Cincinnati Reds' rookie league affiliate, the Billings Mustangs.

"He spent his entire life in baseball and touched many people both inside and outside the game," general manager Walt Jocketty said in a state ment. "Over the last few seasons, he played an important part in the development of our young players.

"Our baseball operations staff and the players he touched will miss him."

Survivors include Forsch's wife, Janice, and two daughters. Funeral arrangements were incomplete.

I always wanted to thank Bob for sharing with me on how to be saved. This was back when he was in Lewiston, ID. Mid-late 1970. Even though our relationship never continued on, the legacy of my Christianity does. I always credit the Christian that I am today, back to that period of time, with Bob. And because of that, I have two adult children who are Christians,(and their spouse) and 8 beautiful grandchildren who have also professed Christ, or are getting ready to. Something that might seem so small, can have a lasting effect, even into eternity. Looks like I'll be introducing all of the fruits of his faithfulness to Bob someday. He was so kind, and a real gentleman.

So sorry to just learn of his passing, still in shock, that he is no longer with his family. I John 5:11-12

In the 70's I started following Bob and Ken's ball careers closely after meeting their dad,Herb, at my home near Drumheller, AB, Canada. Our dads were cousins. We didn't meet, wished to, only met Ken. As I loved sports, it was special to have relatives in the pros.My deepest sympathies.(Floyd Forsch, Anglemont,BC,Canada)

When I was a little girl, my grandparents lived next door to the Forsch Family. I grew up with Bobby and Kenny. Their dad built them a pitching cage in the backyard and they taught me how to pitch and hit and catch. I remember Bobby coming over and helping me with my homework too. I don't know if he knew it or not but I really had a very bad crush on him then. My grandpa took me to all of their Little League and Minor League Games. I don't think I missed many of them. I never went to a Major League Game tho. I do remember going to Candlestick Park to watch one of them play. Not sure who. Rest in Peace Bobby. My mom is there now too. She passed December 28, 2011. With Love and much respect.

I remember back when I was 16 and working for the St. Louis Usher Service taking tickets. My last name was Forshee. But on my name tag I put a redbird sticker over the two EEs. So it read R. Forsh. People would walk by me and say Aren't you pitching tonight? I would tell them I was trying to make a little extra money. That brought laughs. Love ya Bob.

Bob Forsch was a hero of mine; I started following the Cards as a boy in the 70's; he was the ace...as well as a solid hitter. I didn't get to witness his 2 no-hitters, but I do recall predicting the Cards would win the NL East in 1985...I remember Bob coming off surgery after 1984...people asked why the Cards? most were picking them for last place...I said Bob Forsch would be the difference...and he was. If I remember, the Cards won the race with the Mets by 3 games...and Bob Forsch's record in 1985: 9 wins, 6 losses...or the same 3 games over .500 as the Cards won by. He was Cardinal baseball for many of us, the guy who kept us afloat even in those bad years, and we have plenty in the 70's...he will be missed; my condolences to his family and friends. Bob Forsch was a true Cardinal, and always will be.

As a Cardinal-Bob Forsch fan, I clipped a recipe appearing many years ago in the Post-Dispatch, because it was called "Bob Forsch's Favorite Pork Tenderloin". It ended with the comment: "This is the only way Bob likes pork." I was surprised by how good the recipe was and made it many times for the enjoyment of my family. (It requires marinating 2 or 3 pork tenderloins in bourbon, soy sauce, and brown sugar. The sauce is a combination of sour cream, mayonnaise and seasonings.) As always, every time I make this dish it will be made with admiring thoughts of a great ball player as well as one with good taste! Our condolences to the family on your loss. We will always remember and honor him. Barbara Liberman

We were all shocked and deeply saddened to hear of Bob's passing. From the first time that we met as teammates on the Cardinals AA farmclub in Little Rock through his recent passing, Bob was a man of uncharacteristic warmth, sincerity and passion for both his family, friends and baseball. The legacy he left on the game and the St. Louis Cardinal organization is second only to the legacy he left on those who knew him as a father, husband and true friend. He will always be remembered as one of the greatest to pitch in Busch stadium.

God Bless,

Elegy -
That poker face, your game face,
My enemy for one night -
Back when we were teenage kids
And rookies in The Fight...
I was scared - you were so tall,
And already had a rep -
It looked like you were going
to show me
More than one new dancing-step.
And after that night
of schoolboy hoops,
Under the lights downtown,
It always gave me a twinge of - joy
To follow your renown,
To learn about the nice guy
Behind that warrior's face -
But now to mourn this painful loss
To our fragile human race.

My Grandson, Brooks Pinckard, played his Rookie year in Billings this past summer. Bob was his pitching coach and Brooks loved telling me things that Bob told and taught him. I never knew you as a person, but I saw you as a professional. And professional you were...and then some. You improbably pitched TWO no hitters, however, your modest demeanor afterwards was noteworthy. Today's athletes could learn from you. You brought joy to those who watched you play, and I trust you generated love for those in your inner circle. What a man. What a life. You left too early, but you did more than most of us will ever do. Rest in peace, and prayers to your family. Tim R, St. Louis, MO

To Ken, Mollie, Kristen, Amy & Janice,
Kenny, it seems not too long ago you & Bobby were at Hiram Johnson High School and we were all playing baseball in that great baseball city. I can still see the batting cage your Dad, Herb, built across the street from Will C. Wood Jr. high for you and Bobby to hit and pitch. Wow--that definitely paid off for you both!
Molly, Kristen, Amy and Janice - Your loss is felt by so many but it must give you a lot of comfort to read the many comments in this Guest Book. Even if one did not know Bob, one can immediately tell the effect he had on so many--just from watching him pitch for the great Cardinal organization. He was the complete package as an athlete (what an accomplished basketball player and golfer he was too!).
I remember inviting Bob to the US Army Reserve Human Resources Command (on Page Ave) when I was stationed there and he came to sign autographs, baseballs, hats, etc. and hand out photos to all the Soldiers and Army Civilians--and he did it so willingly and graciously.
My Mom, Dad, brother (Danny), sister and I'm sure many, many in Sacramento send our sad, but heartfelt thanks for allowing Bobby to be a part of our lives! God Bless You All in this time of sorrow.

My deepest condolences to the Forsch family. I and my family, which there is only myself and my adopted brother left, was there in person to see Bob's first no-hitter. He was always one of my favorite players, and since he left and several others I cared about,I became a Cub fan. But my heart has a very soft spot for any of the Cardinals through Early 1988. May you see 'Pop' Haines and Dizzy Dean Bob. Kyrie Elaison down the road that you must travel. Amen.

To the family of Bob Forsch,

It is with deep regret on the passing of Bob Forsch I realize that the death of a friend and family member is an irreparable loss to you. Those we love left us with gifts in the form of memories that no one can take away. They gave us wisdom that we can still recall, companionship when we were alone, comfort when we needed it.

May the tender mercy that God has always shown me be with your family now so that you will know that you are not alone, and may the prayers of other help in some small way to bring you strength, comfort and courage each day.

Many words will be expressed, yet we know God can express and provide to you and your family everything that is needed to care and sustain your hearts. Isaiah 46:1 will offer you some comfort , but the loss of a love one is more direct and personal. So wanted to send you these words of sincere sympathy upon the death of a loyal friend and trusted family member. My prayers will be with you and your family.

What a special player and person. A pitcher good enough to be one of only 38 major leaguers to throw 2 no hitters and to be third all-time in wins for Cardinal pitchers. Yet, when he no longer was a full-time starter, he didn't complain. Instead, he taught us all something about character and self respect. He accepted relief assignments and did the same thing he had earlier in his career--he gave his all to help his teammates and his team win. Bob Forsch was a credit to baseball, St. Louis and us mere mortals who will forever miss this hero and long for the summer afternoons and nights spent with him at Busch Stadium.
