Howard Keel Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 10, 2004.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Howard Keel, who lent his good looks and rich baritone to such movie musicals as "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" before reinventing himself as the macho star of westerns and later aboard TV"s "Dallas," has died.

Keel died Sunday morning of colon cancer at his home in Palm Desert, according to his son, Gunnar. He was 85.

Keel starred in Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals in New York and London before being signed to an MGM contract after World War II. He became a star with his first MGM film, playing Frank Butler to Betty Hutton"s Annie Oakley in "Annie Get Your Gun."

Keel"s size and lusty voice made him an ideal leading man for such stars as Esther Williams ("Pagan Love Song," "Texas Carnival," "Jupiter"s Darling"), Ann Blyth ("Rose Marie," "Kismet"), Kathryn Grayson ("Show Boat," "Lovely to Look At," "Kiss Me Kate") and Doris Day ("Calamity Jane"). His own favorite film was the exuberant "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers."

When film studios went into a slump, MGM's musical factory was disbanded. Keel kept busy on the road in such surefire attractions of "Man of La Mancha," "South Pacific," "Annie Get Your Gun" and "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers."

Keel was in his early 60s and presumably nearing the end of his career when he suddenly became a star in another medium.

From its start in 1978, "Dallas" with its combination of oil, greed, sex and duplicity had become the hottest series in television. Jim Davis, who had played the role of Jock Ewing, died in 1981, and the producers needed another strong presence to stand up to the nefarious J.R. Ewing Jr. (Larry Hagman). They chose Keel.

"The show was enormous," Keel reflected in 1995. "I couldn"t believe it. My life changed again. From being out of it, I was suddenly a star, known to more people than ever before. Wherever I went, crowds appeared again, and I started making solo albums for the first time in my career."

As Clayton Farlow, husband of "Miss Ellie" Ewing, Keel remained with "Dallas" until it folded in 1991.

When Keel was born in Gillespie, Ill., his name was Harold Clifford Leek. His father, once a naval captain, became a coal miner and drank to soothe his bitterness. During drunken rages, he beat his children. His mother, a strict Methodist, forbade her two sons from having any entertainment.

"I had a terrible, rotten childhood," Keel commented in 1995. "My father made away with himself when I was 11. I had no guidance, and Mom was six feet tall, bucktoothed and very tough. I was mean and rebellious and had a terrible, bitter temper. I got a job as an auto mechanic, and I would have stayed in that narrow kind of life if I hadn't discovered art. Music changed me completely."

At 20 he was living in Los Angeles and he was taken to a Hollywood Bowl concert featuring famed baritone Lawrence Tibbett. Keel was inspired, and he started taking vocal lessons at 25 cents an hour. His first semiprofessional opportunity came as a singing waiter at the Paris Inn Restaurant in downtown Los Angeles at $15 a week and two meals a day.

He sang in recitals and opera programs and was summoned to an audition with Oscar Hammerstein II, who was looking for young singers to play Curly in the growing number of touring "Oklahoma!" companies. Hammerstein approved, and soon under a new name Howard Keel he was singing "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning" in New York eight times a week. He played "Carousel" for eighteen months in London.

Rodgers and Hammerstein were notorious for underpaying their actors and denying them billing. Keel rankled at being paid $250 a week for the unbilled starring role in a sellout musical. As soon as his contract expired, he hurried back to Los Angeles.

Desperately in need of handsome, virile actors who could sing, MGM signed Keel to a contract that paid $850 a week.

He made it big in musicals, but also appeared in westerns: "Waco," "Red Tomahawk," "The War Wagon" (with John Wayne and Kirk Douglas) and "Arizona Bushwhackers."

Keel was married and then divorced twice: to actress Rosemary Cooper and dancer Helen Anderson, with whom he had three children: Kaija, Kristine, Gunnar. In 1970 he married former airline stewardess Judy Magamoll. They had one daughter, Leslie.

He continued singing in the 1980s, explaining: "As long as I can sing halfway decent, I'd rather sing (than act). There's nothing like being in good voice, feeling good, having good numbers to do and having a fine orchestra."

You passed away on my birthday, time and all. I think we have alot of the same personality traits, which is completely strange. I grew up without my father, and had many hardships in my childhood also. I loved singing and I actually strive to be an actress!! weird how similar right? But I have heard your music and watched a few movies and I absolutely love it. Rest in Peace

I was euphoric to hear him sing in person, and got to shake his hand as my group passed to leave the theatre. He has always been one of my favorite actor/singers. Howard Keel was one of the best actors/singers of ALL time. I've seen many of his movies, and all are very good. My personal favorite is Seven Brides For Seven Brothers. I just read his finished reading his biography last night. The end, written by his wife, was very hard to read. I actually cried. I've been a fan of his for as long as I can remember.

My brother and sister-in-law lost alot of their items when they got flooded during Katrina. A few nights ago my brother mentioned he has been trying to replace "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" and couldn't find it. Years ago my sister gave me the DVD. I pulled out our tubs of VHS that have been stored. I had a VHS of it so tonight I drove over and gave it to them. Him and his wife were thrilled. Mr. Keel is singing with our angels in heaven as we still get to enjoy his very talented voice with the movies he has made.

Howard Keel was wonderful in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. It remains one of my favorite movies. He was a talented man. May The family find comfort in the promise at Psalms 37:29 The righteous themselves will possess the earth, And they will reside forever upon it.

This is my second entry under my writer's name as I'm writing this for the first time!

A Very Much Loved Special Man
By D.K.Milgrim-Heath
A very much loved special man-
This angel sang when songs began.
Not everyone sang quite so pure-
His Keel personality also was his lure!
Unsurpassed melody sung from any spot!
Once hearing him sing you never forgot.
A charismatic feel with all being sung-
No matter what song he had brung.
Giving great love just everywhere-
He did that always with such flair.
Technology advanced today by and by-
A memory lives on from heaven's sky.

My grandfather Vaughn Keel, and his brother Blaine Keel had always told my mother that Howard Keel was their distant cousin. After learning that i searched for episodes of Dallas and all of his many projects he worked on. I always wanted to find out if this were true and meet him. I also want to be an actor in the future. I just hope that when i make it i acheive as much as he did. May he rest in peace.

I'll always be amazed at this man's talent, both in acting and singing. (Not to mention he was very tall, dark, and handsome!) He made a wonderful Frank Butler, a wonderful Bill Hickok, and an amazing Adam Pontipee. Thank you to Mr. Keel for being my favorite actor and the best voice in Hollywood I've ever heard!

From the time I first began to work as an usher in theatres throughout Florida, I would look forward to each film that starred Howard Keel. His voice and personality were so wonderful!

His best film, in my humble opinion was "Kiss Me Kate." But all of his films were great sources of entertainment. He starred in a short-lived Broadway show entitled "AMBASSADOR" which was absolutely wonderful and if you can find a collector's copy of the original record of that show you'll have a musical treasure to cherish forever! Thanks for entertaining us all those years! Best regards to his family.

To The Howard Keel Family,

I know this memmory is here late. However, I just found this site....

To all of you kids, of Howards Family, and especialy Judy, his wife.......

Boy...what a real good time you all had in your lives with this man!

Mr.Keel had the most extrordinary, natural support for his voice. All natural with vibrant tones. Of course,in my humble opinion, he had a God given voice.. in that... he really enjoyed to sing....for all of us to enjoy.

His Singing to others , as I understand, was his passion.

Could we all be so fortunate to be in a position to be happy..to... make people Happy!

Reading from the CD's I have obtained, He really enjoyed singing to the crowd in England...and All!

The natural way he supports his voice in his singing to all who " any "Metropliton Baritone" would greatly appreciate to have.

The effortless tone, diction and approach to the vowels. No one can ever copy- to emulate his "lilt" aproach to the phrases in his songs. Delicate when needed.....

His approch to the phrases..... ..is a beauty,--soft and gentle....and strong.

His Passioniate approach to his songs, at every phrase, is the way It SHOULD BE TAUGHT and sung by all aspiring singers. It has so much feeling and heart!

He had such a quality and thought process to make his voice just float to any song.

So appreciative am I to have him..on record.. to listen and learn!!

Being a tenor,[wish I could have studied for ..just a few months, with him] and have seen his movies as a young man....I am still greatly appreciative of his style that I can learn from.

Not many singers can emulate or appreciate what he had. It is, to me, a... "Once in a lifetime.enjoyment"

I listen to him daily...just to get the feel of his relaxed, natural voice..with the control he has in his delivery...it really is extrordinary. Any one who attempts Voice...knows this,

Of all that I read of his Life,He loved singing....! ..boy..could we all make a living ...just loving what we do..! As he was proud of!

To all the Family, I say Thank you Howard, for being there.

I wish your family well and safe.

Thank you, Mr Keel, for all the happiness you brought to us in our now..lonely rooms with.. speakers that do thier best to produce the goodness/beauty your voice brought to our humble ears..

May your soul, your voice, that has touched thousands of hearts,.... SING.. to all the wonderful beings that have preceeded you to the place you now rest.

They will never want for more...

Sincerely,

A thankful man,

Bob Way

What a lovely man. His musical gifts live always in my Musical collections. He was my first high school crush and I played his music so often my first son ended up singing just like him (Osmosis) He had a wonderful cameo in "Deep In My Heart" ("Your Land Is My Land". I wish they had released "Rose Marie" He was fantastic and forever in my heart.

As a child I developed a love for musicals. Several mornings I would sneak down stairs and turn on a movie such as Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and I would be lost in a time of dashing men and elegant ladies. Howard Keel was a very gifted man whose voice and acting was far and away above that of his peers. His death is a great loss to all who love music.

Charlotte Masarati

February 20, 2006

Since I was a little girl I have loved Howard Keel! As children my sister and I wore out 3 videos of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and knew every song and dance routine by heart. If I need to cheer myself up I always put on Seven Brides or Calamity Jane. I can't wait to watch them with my own children.

I was over the moon when my mum went to see Howard Keel perform in London a few years ago and managed to get me an autographed programme - one of my prized possessions!

I was so saddened to hear the news that Howard Keel had died but am sure that the excellent musicals he performed in will keep his memory alive for many years to come!

To the Keel Family, Your loved one's love for you will always be in your hearts forever. This world lost a great man in 2004 - one that only aimed to make this world a better, special place for everyone - his family, friends, people in the entertainment world and others that have admired Howard Keel from afar. This was by being the gentle entertainer that he was through his musical and acting talents. As a child I grew up with the glorious musicals that he was in and remember the beautiful baritone voice, the handsome smile and the stage presence that he gave the world all his life. My own son is an musical theater major that is also a baritone but his voice hasn't fully ripened as he's only 17 years old so he studies the DVDs of your beloved husband/father/grandfather and great-grandfather to polish up his own musical endeavors. I just saw the Kiss Me Kate DVD that my son owns for the first time last week because my son recently dd study it. I was smitten with your beloved's voice all over agan. Howard Keel's talents are studied for the musical theater genre themes in the magnet schools for future actors. I work with the local middle school that my son went to five years ago as a parent volunteer- so I know that Mr.Keel's voice is so important to study about and hear for these junior high youngsters.

May God Rest His Soul Forever. D.K.Heath

Where have I been? I was not aware that Howard Keel had died until I began searching the web to purchase Kismet, a musical he did in 1955 with Ann Blyth. My prayers are with his family. I thank God that He allowed us to have him for a little while. He used his gift of music to entertain millions. We didn't have much growing up in the Tennessee mountains, but Mother wanted to make sure that all the children were exposed to some culture and music. The first musical movie I remember seeing was "Seven Brides", and we all enjoyed it so much. Later came "Showboat". I guess we saw them all. He seemed so big to a little girl, and had that tremendous, wonderful voice.

Only about a month ago "Seven Brides" showed again and brought back such fond memories. I wondered at that time if Mr. Keel was still living and what he had done. We will always have his presence and that voice. God blessed us all with his many talents, but for right now it's earth's loss, heaven's gain. Condolences to his family in their big loss.

I had the pleasure to meet and work with Howard Keel just shortly after he started working on the Dallas series.  I had just finished remodeling the home of one of the other Dallas cast members and Mr. Keel was interested in remodeling his home.  I worked along side both Judy and Howard for more than a year. What a pleasure.  Mr. Keel was a humble, gracious and warm-hearted person. I will never forget the day I spoke with Mr. Keel on the phone, just shortly after we finished his home. Mr. Keel just got out of the hospital after some type of heart surgery and I remember that Mr. Keel was weeping with humble thankfulness for his newly remodeled home.  For many years, each Christmas, our family’s exchanged Christmas cards and photos.

I am saddened to hear about the passing of Howard Keel. I am also humbled to have known him, he was an extraordinary person.  May he rest in peace and his legacy last for many many years.

With his films and great work on Dallas preserved for future generations to watch, his talent will always be an inspiration to others. No matter what role he played, from a cowboy wearing jeans to a business tycoon wearing a tuxedo, Mr. Keel always looked and acted like a gentlemen. Many actors today lack this quality. May his great smile always shine and may his superb voice be heard forever.

My condolences to the Keel Family. Such happy memories for me, seeing him on the Silver Screen in Chicago.

Upon hearing of his passing, I cried, and then played his last album of beautiful music.

Know that he is singing in heaven.

I was a die-hard fan of Mr. Keel. I loved his role in Dallas. Not many can just take over a role in a show like he did and be accepted, but he was awesome. It's sad for us to see the great ones go.
