Curtis Roosevelt Via

Curtis Roosevelt Via, 73, of Westminster died Sunday night, September 7, 2008, at the Carroll Hospital Center.

Born October 27, 1934, in Augusta County, Virginia, he was the son of the late William King Via and Cora Belle Harris Via. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Virginia L. Via.

He served in the Army and trained in the Signal Corp with special training as a message handler receiving top secret clearance as a cryptography operator and was stationed in Quarry Heights US Canal Zone, Panama.

He was a member of Westminster Moose Lodge # 1381 where he enjoyed playing cards. His hobbies included solving crossword puzzles and assembling jig saw picture puzzles of over a million pieces. In his past time he would be sitting out side bird watching. He enjoyed watching his grandsons play baseball.

Surviving besides his wife is daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Richard Paul of California; a son, Martin Via of Georgia; four stepchildren and spouses, Ann Marie and Dillard Brummet of Baltimore, Kathy and Donald Boone, Terry and Susan Doyle, Charles and Susan Doyle, all of Westminster; brothers, Arnold L., Herbert H. and Chester M. Via, all of Virginia; sisters, Shelly J. Smulsky of Virginia and Hessie I. Dailey of Ohio. His greatest joy was his 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by brothers, Rufus L., James W., Clarence W., Leonard E. and Lorenders W. Via; and a sister; Alice V. Garrison.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, September 12, 2008, at the Fletcher Funeral Home, 254 E. Main Street, Westminster with the Reverend Richard Shamer officating. Interment will be at Lake View Memorial Park in Eldersburg.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 until 4 and from 7 until 9 p.m. Thursday, September 11, 2008.
