Hello,
We apologize for being so late in expressing our deepest condolences to you and your family. We want you to know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this holiday season and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo, service branch, rank and hometown of Joel L. Bertoldie US Army Specialist.
We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families, friends and others who support our mission.
We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.
Sincerely,

”Honor and Remember” - “Project Compassion” We love our Soldiers! We love our country and we cannot express enough love and compassion to the families of our fallen heroes. War does not discriminate – It breaks our hearts to see the faces of the fallen. We want to give this gift to the hero’s Mother, Father and/or spouse. We are a 501c3 nonprofit organization! Almost 2,000 portraits have been completed and shipped to the parents and or spouse - at no cost as this is a gift from one American to another!
This is a gift! We have some wonderful sponsors who help with the costs, and only want you know that we care.
Contact us directly at [email protected] or go to www.heropaintings.com . If you have already had a portrait completed, we pray that you are enjoying the portrait and God Bless You.
Sincerely and Respectfully,

In Memory of Joel ~ (Debra Estep)
July 18, 2008
Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Joel, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

It is so hard to put into words what we want to say. We miss you and think about you constantly. It is so hard to believe 5 years have passed. I took Baylee to visit your memorial and see your name on the wall. We left some flowers for you!

We know the grief of losing a son. We know the strength God will give you and the many times He will hold you in His arms as you cry and believe you can't handle one more day. We know how He will whisper in your ear, "Lean on Me, My child and I will hold you up."
Your son is a hero and God has a special welcome home for heros.

The Final Salute
“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Spc Joel L. Bertoldie our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Joel. And to Joel it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made in combat while serving the U.S. Army and his country. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Joel, you are a brave Warrior, a true Patriot and our Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.
On behalf of the 1,385 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Joel’s family and loved ones.

Father we entrust our brother Joel to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
May God hold Joel in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathies.

I have thought about you and your family often and prayed for you. Our son was stationed in Fallujah, attached to the 3rd ID in 2003. His psyop team was the closest and from what I understand, the first to respond to the attack that cost you your son.
We cried when we got that letter, cried for you, cried for our son. From one mom to another, I just wanted you to know that still even now, we have somewhat a sense of you and your son, a sense of your pain, and sadly a sense of your loss. We have the pamphlet from the Army service for him in our son's gun cabinet, with his other Iraq items.
I don't know why I thought of your son again today, and felt the need to reach out to you, other than the strange bond that ties different people together in different ways. Know that we remember him, remember you.

Merry Christmas Sweetheart, Our 4th Christmas without you and I still miss you as much as the first one. We celebrated at Pat and Lisa's new home on Saturday. Everyone had a good time. On their mantle was a picture of you opening a gift from a past Christmas, so you were there with us. Jesse was with Erins family so we didn't get to see him. However the weekend before he went to lunch with us. I thank God for him and I know the rest of the family does too. He looks more like you everytime I see him. It brings back so many memories and will as the years go by. He is so special to all of us. How about those Cowboys making the play-offs? Next the Super Bowl. I won't even talk about my Chiefs. Your Uncle Pat is sure happy. Tell Grammy Merry Christmas and that I love her. Till next time. I love and miss you so much. Grandma Barb

Honey, tell everyone Merry Christmas for us, and we will be thinking of you and all that are with you, as we always do.

Megan told me the other day she got some "Iraq pencils for school for Joel" Jordan stayed all night with me last night and we said a prayer for you and all the rest of the family before we went to bed. She mentions you often. Well, it's almost time for football. A lot of people think the Cowboys are going to do real good this year. Of course I think the Chiefs will. TO the SPC Joel L BERTOLDIE FAMILY,
My hero bracelet reminds me that it was three years since Joel's death. I have been wearing this bracelet as a reminder that so many families are suffering the loss of loved ones. I also am a 4th grade teacher. I hope you don't mind, but I put Joel's picture on our classroom flag. We have discussions about our service men and women and how brave they are to represent our country. I share what little I know about him from this website. He will not be forgotten.

You don't know who I am, but every day I would drive by your house on the way to work and always wondered about you. You are the world to me, because you gave the greatest sacrifice to protect your country. Just a few weeks ago, I saw a new sign in the yard and found out the truth that you are no longer with us. Hey Joel, its Uncle P. 1st time I found out about this site, too!! Always the last to know! Miss you more and more each day. Thank GOD for that little boy you left behind. Every time I play with him it is like it is 1985-86 and we are just having fun. Spitting image of you. We were like brothers and that means so much to me. I love and miss you so much. I keep wanting to believe that you are still overseas fighting for our country, and you'll be home soon. I know that is not the case, it just takes every ounce of me to believe you are gone. Just tonight Jordan was singing a Jessica Simpson song saying it reminds her of you. She misses you so much. The short time you were with her you impacted her life. She is so proud to be your cousin. Write ya soon.

Joel,
I've really been thinking about you a lot lately. Jesse is getting so big and I know that you are so proud of him. I hope you see that I am working at this to the best of my ability. He's starting asking about you a lot lately. He wants to know why you aren't here and what happened. I tell him that you were a Hero for our country and for him and that one day you and Jesse will be together. He doesn't completely understand but he knows you are in heaven with God. Joel, it is such a blessing to have your family. I don't know what Jesse and I would do without them all, but ecspecially your parents and Koda. They have done everything in there power to make life as easy as possible without you. Jesse is the spitting image of you and just as ornery! He also has your charisma and huge heart. Please continue to watch over and protect him. We love you and miss you. Until then.

Joel, I've wanted to sign this for a long time. I decided today, through my tears, I would try to tell you how much I love and miss you. I'ts getting close to a year and I still find it hard to believe you aren't coming home to us. We celebrated your 21st birthday. Sent 21 balloons up to you. Jesse had quite a time. I know you are so proud of him. It means so much to have a part of you here with us. He is such a joy and loved so much. Joel, I talk to you everyday and cry like it happened yesterday. I love and miss you more than any words can say. Grandma Barb

Dear Barb and Family, I just want you to know that I think of you often. You have almost finished your 6 weeks of hell (Holidays). When I think about Joel, I see him and Brad playing @ Grandma Barbs. Seems like yesterday to me. I do hope you are taking care of each other, that is so important. Even though I have had loss in my life, I cannot grasp what you are feeling...Just know that you are always loved.

Barb, Debi, Scott, Koda, Stacey, Rick and all family: I just heard the news today. Sorry doesn't begin to tell you how I feel. I just remember a lively beautiful little boy....I didn't get to know the man Joel grew into and I regret that. I know in your sorrow that you have great pride in him and all of his accomplishments. I am praying for you all. Stacey, I want so badly to give you a hug. You are still one of my best friends even though time has lead us down different paths. I will always love you. Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss.

Judy, I was so very sorry to hear about your grandson's death. He is truly a hero to all American's. I don't know if you remember me but you and I were good friends during our time at Western Auto. I remember Scott spending time with my parents in Raytown and they even took him to the zoo once and they really enjoyed it. That was so many years ago and now the nation grieves in your loss. I send my sympathy and prayers to you and the entire family.
