Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this week and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and hometown of Richard S. Gottfried US Army Sergeant 1st Class.
We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families and friends and others who support our mission.
We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.
Sincerely,
Charlie Gili & Family

It has truly been my honor to sign Richard's guest book these past few years. Unfortunately, due to complications from my Multiple Sclerosis, this may be the last message I'm able to write. Please forgive me and know that Richard will always be remembered in my home.

I heard about Steve when he passed from my friend Frank Norris. It saddened me so much. I remember Steve as one of the kindest guys in my class. It hurt so much; the loss of a classmate is always hard because we remember childhood things and have fond and funny memories of growing up. I miss you still Steve and think about you often.

”Honor and Remember” - “Project Compassion” We love our Soldiers! We love our country and we cannot express enough love and compassion to the families of our fallen heroes. War does not discriminate – It breaks our hearts to see the faces of the fallen. We want to give this gift to the hero’s Mother, Father and/or spouse. We are a 501c3 nonprofit organization! Over 1,800 portraits have been completed and shipped to the parents and or spouse - at no cost as this is a gift from one American to another!
This is a gift! We have some wonderful sponsors who help with the costs, and only want you know that we care.
Contact us directly at [email protected] or go to www.heropaintings.com . If you have already had a portrait completed, we pray that you are enjoying the portrait and God Bless You.
Sincerely and Respectfully,
Kenna

My deepest sympathies go to the Gottfried family. I knew Steve in High School. My memories of him are a strong vibrant young man. He was funny, nice and an all around good guy. I just found out about this tonight and even though it has been years, I am sure the families sadness remains. May God keep him.

It is difficult to know what to say since I want to express my sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Sgt 1st Class Gottfried. Please know that your loved one is not forgotten. I wish everyone impacted by this tragic loss strength and peace. I hope that Sgt 1st Class Gottfried knew that there are people in America who respect his great courage in serving as a member of the US military. Although I did not know him, I know that he must have been a very special person to be willing to do something that most Americans will never have to experience, and for that we can never say thank you enough.
Thank you Sgt 1st Class Gottfried!

My deepest sympathies go to the Gottfried family. I worked with SFC Richard Gottfried for three years at Ft. Knox. He was the personifaction of a professional and the finest NCO I had the pleasure of working with in the Army. He was both techincally and tactically proficient and taught me more than anyone else that I served with during 12 years in the Army. I truly considered him a friend.

As a young soldier in the early nineties,I can remember a then SGT.Gottfried as one of my early mentors. He always did the right thing and stressed that we do the same, he kept us positive about any situation. There were many nights when he was Sergeant Of The Guard during training exercises in Germany I would do what ever it took to get on his shift because he always looked after the welfare of his soldiers. He was a model NCO, Family Man and a Great American. I was hurt when I got the news; this guy gave us so mush, he was a big part of our success while serving in Supply Platoon S&T Troop 11th ACR in Fulda Germany. SFC.Gottfried was a special person,I believe God puts special people in our paths as we walk on this earth,I am very grateful that SFC.Gottfried was placed on mine. All the young soldiers loved him, and the senior leadership looked up to him because was a Make It Happen NCO. I would like give my condolences to his Wife and Children, He touched our lives and we are thankful.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I was walking down the hallway of the division material management center here at Fort Riley and noticed a memorial to a fallen soldier. I immediately recognized him as one of my soldiers from Supply & Transport Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment stationed in Fulda, Germany in the early ninetys. Sgt Gottfried was an excellent solder with a can do attitude, always upbeat and positive. I feel very sorry for the loss to his family and his Army family and my wife joins me in expressing our condolences to Mary Jo.

I didn't personally know Sgt. 1st Class Gottfried; however, I am a fellow Missourian and grew up in Eldon and Camdenton, Missouri. He was 2 years older than me. My husband is in the US Air Force and has almost 19 years in. He has proudly served his country as I am sure your loved one had. There is never a moment that goes by that I don't think about the fallen soldiers and their families. American's take for granted the very freedoms that my husband, all of our military members, and your loved one is willing to sacrafice their lives for. Your family is in my prayers.

SFC R. Steven Gottfried was my brother, best friend and an outstanding family man. For those of you that happen to pass by this sight know that the world lost a great man on March 9, 2004. As I have had much time to recant memories of my brother I can not ever remember him getting angry. He had a very diplomatic approach to everything from family to work. He could make you smile on your worst day. He was the man with all the answers. He had the strength and heart of a lion. His passing has left us at a loss for words, but not without memories. He rarely gave much thought to himself and focused on others always. When he served in Desert Storm one of the soldiers he served with had no family. When it was over and he was returning he asked us to be sure and make posters and banners for his friend rather then himself. He said he knew we loved him, but the other soldier had no one waiting for him. That is just the way Steven was always looking out for everyone! Greater Love have no man, than he that lay down his life for his country, friend, and family. My brother lays rest in Jefferson City Missouri in a very honorable site, with America's Flag proudly displayed 35 feet above with lights that shine on it every night. I love and miss Steven and I am not alone. God Bless America and all who have parished as he.
