GWALTNEY, John A., of Wall, N.J., fondly known as "Se¤or Juan," passed away August 7, 2008, at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York. He was born in Richmond, Va., on June 7, 1943, and had lived in Wall, N.J., since 1987. He attended Ferrum College and the University of Richmond, and had a 25-year career in the trucking and transportation industry with McLean Trucking Co. He played professional football for the Richmond Rebels and the Richmond Mustangs, and coached Little League football for many years. John was very proud of his southern heritage, and loved the history of the Civil War. He enjoyed U.Va. football, the Washington Redskins, fine cigars, as well as the company of his many friends and his loving family. Most recently he was able to fulfill his dream of having the "friendliest little cigar store at the Jersey Shore," in Belmar, N.J. He was predeceased by his parents, Fritz and Marie Gwaltney; and his brother, Jim Gwaltney. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 46 years, Donna; his daughter, Kimberly Brewer of Richmond, Va.; his son and daughter-in-law, J. Allan Gwaltney Jr. and Lisa of Hayden, Idaho; his six grandchildren, Chelsea, Mackenzie, Lauren, Allison, John III, and Aaron; and his two yellow labs, Bonnie and Clyde. He is also survived by extended family in Virginia and North Carolina. The family will greet friends from 12 noon to 1 p.m. Friday, August 15, at The Presbyterian Church on the Hill, 10 Cold Indian Springs Rd., Ocean, N.J. His memorial service will follow at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory may be made to the Monmouth County SPCA, P.O. Box 93, Eatontown, N.J. 07724. John Gwaltney was my Driver Supervisor who began my career with, "I am your FRIEND". He was most certainly that as I, a woman, entered the male sanctum of the driver's room. He would pop 2 Rolaids when I entered his office. He was fair and he didn't let me say the wrong things to hurt my livelihood.
In short, I will always remember him fondly and that he was a good boss.

He was a good man...and a great boss.
I was one of McLean's 5 women drivers. He called me "a pioneer". I may have responded with, " Huh?"
He was always fair with me. I regret not replacing all the Tums he ate when I entered his office. I have only good memories of this man who started my driving career with his booming voice saying, "I AM YOUR FRIEND."
