KIRTLEY, Thomas, Lloyd Sr. "God gives us love, something to love, He lends us." Tennyson Thomas Lloyd Kirtley, Sr. was born in Salmon, Idaho, November 16, 1918. He died, August 31, 2008. He grew up in Sunnyvale, Calif., where he graduated from San Jose State College. After receiving his Master's degree in Chemical Engineering from California Institute of Technology, he served his country during World War II, making black powder for Hercules Powder Company. After the war, he moved with Hercules to Hopewell, Va., where he was active in the community and a member, deacon and elder of First Presbyterian Church for over 60 years. In 2007, he and his wife, Jean, came to Trinity Oaks retirement community in Salisbury, N. C. to be near their son, Tom Jr. Mr. Kirtley is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Eugene (Jean) Chappel Kirtley; his sister, Mary Kirtley McCreath of San Jose, Calif.; son, Thomas Lloyd Kirtley Jr. MD and wife, Dorothy Richardson Kirtley; son, Frank Chappel Kirtley; five grandsons, Stephen and fianc‚, Airi, Aaron and his wife, Michelle, Nathan, Marcus and his wife, Jessica, and David Kirtley; one granddaughter, Roseanne Kirtley; and two great-grandsons, Ethan and Philip. He is also survived by stepgranddaughters, Alison Sugg and her fianc‚, Ross, Laura Byrd and her husband, Greg, and Jennifer Hope Sugg-Florez and husband, Kamilo. A remarkable man, an example of a life well-lived and loved. The family will greet friends at 12:00 noon prior to a memorial service at 1 p.m. Wednesday, September 3, at First Presbyterian Church in Hopewell, Va. Burial will follow at Appomattox Cemetery. Funeral arrangements by Lyerly Funeral Home, Salisbury, N. C. and J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home in Hopewell, Va. In lieu of flowers, please choose a charity close to your heart in Tom's name. Tommy,
