ALBERT HUDSPETH Obituary

HUDSPETH--Albert. Albert James "Jim" Hudspeth, a renowned neuroscientist, died peacefully at home on August 16, 2025 of glioblastoma at age 79. Jim was fascinated by the question of how hearing works and his pioneering research in the field garnered him the highest honors in neuroscience. His 50-year research career on the inner workings of the hair cell -- the sensory cell responsible for hearing - included positions at CalTech, UC San Francisco, UT Southwestern Medical Center, and concluded as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator and the FM Kirby Professor for Sensory Neuroscience at Rockefeller University for the past 30 years. A beloved teacher, Jim mentored 91 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, many of whom went on to prominent careers of their own. A brilliant communicator, he was passionate about sharing the beauty of science with a broader audience. We mourn his loss and celebrate a life well lived. Please send in memoriam donations to Rockefeller University's RockEDU Science Outreach or Intertwine Arts, two programs Jim deeply loved.
