Steven Ward Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Nov. 12 to Nov. 25, 2008.
WARD, Steven Ronald, of Roanoke, Va., departed this life on November 7, 2008. A native of Richmond, Va., Steve was born on April 11, 1948 and was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Francis Ward. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Gail Hasselmann Ward; in-laws, John and Verna Hasselmann of Roanoke; sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Jerry Eyster of Southport, Conn.; brother and sister-in-law, Harry and Judy Ward of Chandler, Ariz.; and half-brother, William L. Ward of Augusta, Ga. In addition, Steve leaves behind many other sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. After serving six years in the Air Force Reserve, Steve worked most of his life in the automotive industry. He loved NASCAR, boating on Smith Mountain Lake and throwing darts at Perkys. His greatest gifts were his quick wit, keen sense of humor and his lifelong love of animals, especially cats. Gail and the family would like to offer special appreciation to those who cared for Steve during the final stages of his illness, especially the staff of 12 West-Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Raleigh Court Healthcare, and his sitter, Melinda Henegar. Thank you for giving him the dignity the disease sought to destroy. To celebrate Steve's life, a memorial service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in the Chapel of Light on November 28 at 11 a.m., with visitation at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Alzheimer's Association or an animal welfare organization of your choice. Arrangements by Oakey's of Roanoke.

Gail, it's been many a year since we have seen each other. Chuck and I bought your Highland Springs house back in the early 80's, you guys moved to Chesterfield. I am so sorry for you and Steve that he had Alzheimers. But he's now free from that, and I am sure you feel relieved that he is. The good memories aide us in our recovery, and if memory serves, you are a strong person. Take care of yourself.

Dear Ward Family,
I knew Steve many, many years ago (probably 40). He was always kind and considerate and my memories of him are sweet. I'm so sorry he was stricken with Alzhimer's and you all had to witness his decline, but I'm sure he is looking down at you all with love and faith that you will know he is always with you, in your hearts and in your minds. He will never leave you. My prayers for your strength are with you.

Gail, this is one of your friends from long ago. Beverly (Hartman) Akin. I was perusing the obituaries and was so sorry to hear of your loss. I lost my first husband in 1995 and I know the pain of grief. I pray that God will sustain you during this difficult time.

Gail,
Many years have gone pass since last seeing either of you. We had heard about Steve's disease through
Doug. We did share some good times together many years ago and we both will remember the laughs we all enjoyed as well as the friendships.
Take care and may God bless you and keep you in his care as only time helps to ease our pain.
Charlie & Pam Cildress.
