Alvin Anderson Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Dec. 4, 2008.
ANDERSON, Alvin (continued), brother, William Morris Anderson Jr.; sister, Anna Katharine Anderson; mother and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Philip S. Calvo Jr.; brother-in-law, Phillip S. Calvo III; sons-in-law, Tyler Sherwin and Byrne Huddleston; and other family and friends too numerous to count. He also leaves behind his beloved granddogs, Brie Sherwin and Otis Huddleston. His first non-furry grandchild will arrive in May. Alvin lived his life with zest and enthusiasm that was contagious; he never met a stranger. Adored and loved by his wife and daughters, he will be terribly missed. There never was a finer gentleman. Alvin once said, "I'm proud of two things in my life, one is my family and the other is my college. I told someone the other day, this makes me feel like the person my dog thinks I am." The memorial service is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Friday, December 5, 2008 at the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, 215 Richmond Road. A reception will follow at the Virginia Room of the Williamsburg Lodge. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Alvin Anderson Fund for the William & Mary Alumni House. Checks should be made out to the College of William & Mary Foundation, P.O. Box 2100, Williamsburg, Va. 23187, or to the William & Mary Law School, where a scholarship is being established in Alvin's name. Checks should be made out to the Marshall-Wythe School of Law Foundation, noting the Alvin P. Anderson Scholarship in the memo line and put to the attention of Sally Kellam, William & Mary Law School, P.O. Box 8795, Williamsburg, Va. 23187. Nelsen Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements. Online condolences may be registered at www.nelsencares.com.

We were so saddened to hear about Alvin. He was a bigger than life figure for the legal community and the college. He represented both of my daughters in skirmashes at the college and they remain appreciative. Best to Betsy and the girls. Our thought and prayers are with you. Best Always-Martin D. (Art) Walsh and Nan.

My deepest condolences go out to Betsy and the family. Just last week I was leafing through the '70 Colonial Echo, marveling at our youth, and wondering where the last four decades have gone. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you at this very difficult time.

There truly was no finer gentleman. While worldly in everyway, he undestood the importance of the finer, simpler things that last beyond a lifetime. Proper introductions and the value of your name were instilled in his wisdom. Alvin was always kind, caring, and thoughtful. He was a joy to work with and to know. We are blessed to have had the privilege of his friendship. Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.

Alvin was a friend from church who I asked to sign my application to become a CPA. Later, he was most helpful to me in understanding the intricacies of estate administration and filings. I am shocked and saddened to learn of his passing. My thoughts are with Betsy and "the girls" at this difficult time.
