Richard Aubrey Farmar Jr.

FARMAR, Richard Aubrey Jr., passed away peacefully after a long illness on February 26. He was the son of the late Richard Aubrey Farmar and the late Virginia Mullan Farmar. He was also preceded in death by beloved grandchildren, Joseph "Joe" Webb Beasley and Anne Marie Beasley.Those left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife of 55 years, Katherine Holt Farmar; a daughter, Katherine "Kay" F. Strickland and her husband, Wayne, of Roanoke; a son, Richard Aubrey Farmar III and his wife, Sue, of Suggetts Point; a daughter, Ayn F. Coates and her husband, Gary, of Lynchburg; a daughter, Elizabeth "Betcie" F. Thrift of Warsaw; nine grandchildren, Charles "Charlie" C. Houck of Charleston, S.C., Richard "Mac" M. Houck of Asheville, N.C., Katherine "Katey" A. Houck of Roanoke, Mary Jesse Farmar and Susan "Suzy" Thornton Farmar of Suggetts Point, Kelsey Ayn Coates and Katherine Mitchell Coates of Lynchburg, Thomas "Tim" William Beasley III of Boca Raton, Fla., Robert "Tripp" Hudnall Thrift III of Warsaw; and his beloved pets, Allie and TooToo. A graduate of the University of Virginia and a lifelong resident of Northern Neck, Dick was a previous owner of the B. H. Baird Insurance Agency. He was very active in his community and served as president of the Warsaw Chamber of Commerce, president of the Warsaw Rotary Club, president of the Richmond County Ruritan Club and as Zone Governor of Ruritan, president of the Rappahannock High School P.T.A., reorganized and served as president of the Rappahannock Booster Club, first president of the Northern Neck Assembly, first president of the Independent Insurance Agents of the Northern Neck; co-founder and served as first chairman of the Rappahannock Chapter of Ducks Unlimited, served as Vestryman, Senior Warden and Trustee of St. John's Episcopal Church, board member and vice president of Hospice, served on the Agents' Advisory Council of Montgomery Insurance Company, Travelers Insurance Company and Reliance Insurance Company, member of the Board of Directors of Northern Neck State Bank, and served as foreman of the Northern Neck Multijurisdictional Grand Jury. Dick was named Richmond County's Outstanding Citizen in 1973. The family wishes to thank Dr. William Brand, Dr. Geraldo Mendez-Picon, the wonderful nursing staff on the 2nd floor, the PCU 3rd floor, 4th floor of Henrico Doctors' Hospital, Forest Campus, and Mary and the caring staff of Hospice of Virginia. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, February 27, at Welch Funeral Home in Warsaw. The service will be held on Saturday, February 28, 11 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, Warsaw. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Haven, P.O. Box 1267, Warsaw, Va. 22572
