Elizabeth Hirschler Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Oct. 6 to Oct. 7, 2009.
HIRSCHLER, Elizabeth W., 93, widow of Edward S. Hirschler, passed away on October 4, 2009. A native of Richmond, she was the daughter of the late Rhonie and Lee Whitlock and was a graduate of Smith College. She is survived by her two daughters, Beth Long and Anne Long; and her son-in-law, David Long, all of Richmond. In addition are her four granddaughters, Tracy Long, Kay Long-Martin, Cindy Long and Diane Cafritz; and seven great-grandchildren. She was active in a wide variety of civic, cultural and charitable endeavors over many years of service to her community. She was not only a devoted wife and mother, but a constant support to her husband, to her children and her friends. Her passing will leave a void that will be very hard to fill. The family particularly wants to thank her devoted caregivers, Tammy Williams, Mary Jackson, Kim Brown, Gayle Mixon and Ella Bland. The family will receive friends at her home after 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. There will be a graveside service held at Hebrew Cemetery, 4th and Hospital Streets, on Thursday, October 8, at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to the Beth Ahabah Museum and Archives, the Hirschler Flower Fund of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Foundation, or the Virginia Home.

Dear Anne and Beth, Please accept my sympathies. I remember your mother as an elegant lady and a gracious hostess when the northern relatives came to visit.

Beth and Ann
It is with great sorry that we hear of the passing of your mother, Mrs. Hirschler. My grandmother and mother and your moms friend, Gladys Crump left us a year ago this month and we feel your sorrow as we loved your mom and family for all the kind things and love and kindness you showed us during our loss. She was a kind, loving gracious lady that respected and loved our loved one also. Our condolences and stay strong.

The phrase "steel magnolias" was meant for these women. What a challenge to live up to the example they set for us. We, the daughters, have our wonderful memories--and each other. Love, Susan
