Philip Meggs Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Nov. 26, 2002.
Philip Baxter Meggs, 60, died on Sunday, November 24, 2002 after a brave fight against leukemia. A native of Florence, South Carolina, he was born on May 30, 1942. He is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Libby Phillips Meggs; his parents, Wallace Nat Meggs and Elizabeth Pruitt Meggs of Florence, South Carolina; two children: son, Andrew Philip Meggs of Tustin, California; and daughter, Elizabeth Wilson Meggs of Richmond, Virginia; his two brother, William Joel Meggs and spouse, Susan Martin Meggs of Greenville, North Carolina; sister, Elizabeth Meggs Lever and husband, David Lever of Lexington, South Carolina; brother, Wallace Nathaniel Meggs Jr. and wife, Judy Baggett Meggs of Laurens, South Carolina; and many nieces and nephews. He was outstanding in all that he did as a teacher, writer, designer, historian, artist, husband and father. He received a Master of Fine Arts degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and an honorary doctorate from Massachusetts College of Art. In 1968, he began teaching in the Communication Arts and Design Department at Virginia Commonwealth University, chairing the department from 1974 to 1987, during which time enrollment doubled and the program rose to national prominence. In addition to his teaching at V.C.U., he served as visiting faculty at Syracuse University and the National College of Art Design, Dublin. His first book, A History of Graphic Design, was published in 1983, and remains today the definitive work on that subject. He wrote over a dozen books and 150 articles and papers on design and typography, including the section on graphic design in the Encyclopedia Britannica. He was a brilliant designer and artist whose work was included in the Art Director’s Club Annual, Graphics Annual, and Print Magazine’s Regional Design Annual. Since 1993, he proudly served on the United States Postal Service’s Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee, which recommends subjects and designs for United States postage stamps. In 1996, he was awarded the University Award of Excellence, V.C.U.’s highest faculty award that recognizes distinguished achievement in teacher, scholarship, and service. Most recently, he was inducted into the Art Directors Hall of Fame, receiving their Educator’s Award for lifetime achievements that significantly shaped the future of the fields of design education and writing. Although he is best known for his books, he said, "Of all the things I’ve been involved in, I am most proud of my children and my students." The family will receive visitors Tuesday evening, November 26, at Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road, from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 27, at the same address. Interment will follow at Dale Memorial Cemetery. A special memorial service at Virginia Commonwealth University will be held next week, details to be announced. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Philip B. Meggs Scholarship Fund, care of the Communication Arts and Design Department at Virginia Commonwealth University, 325 N. Harrison Street, Richmond, Virginia 23284.

He gave me the confidence to continue in this career that I love so dear. I am very much sadden that I found out about Mr. Meggs passing 10 years later. But I and the Coleman Family send our belated regards to the Meggs family. He successfully inspired multiples of generations of designers. and I my self love him for it. May Jehovah God continues to bless him, his loving wife, and beautiful family. - With sadness Vincent J. Coleman II "Last of the Redhot Designers."

Phil was a friend and mentor. He was FUN. One time we were having a critique in class and the first student after the break was very serious, so Phil said let's tease him and be insanely critical of his fine work. The whole class played along. Great fun and he laughed at himself in the end. And he basked in our praise of his work. I regret that I missed Phil's funeral and I apologize for that -but he's with us all from all that he gave us. God bless the Meggs family. - David Grace.

Phil touched my life as a teacher and as a friend. He always had time to keep in touch. Phil was a major reason why I encouraged my daughter to attend VCU. Becky ('04) enjoyed his classes and his humor as much as I did and we will always have him in common. He was very special and will be missed.

I will always remember Phil and his unique sense of humor that he used so powerfully in the classroom. I probably would not have continued my studies after graduation from VCU if Phil had not encouraged me.

Libby and family, my thoughts are with you. We will miss him.

Barbara and I are saddened by the passing of Phil. He was to all of us at CSAC, more thah just a fellow committee member. His careful and deliberate attention to detail and research of the ideas and thoughts he put forward gave us all a sense of appreciation for his heart as well as his intellect. He was a good friend to each and every one of us. We will miss him.

To Libby and the family, we send our deepest sympathy.

Dear Libby and Family,

I treasured the opportunity to know Phil.

He was such an advocate for excellence. His historical sensibility brought a depth to design as no one before. His arguments were eloquent. His wit and insights were greatly admired.

It pains all of us to lose such an extraordinary being in our lives. I wish you comfort in knowing how much he was loved.

The students in the design department cherished our professor, and we will always cherish the things with which he's left us. We took notes in his history class, not only of information we thought would be on the exam, but of witticisms that we never wanted to forget. I've learned not to take design too seriously, and yet to always think about it thoroughly. I'll never forget visiting him in his office for advising, and I'll never forget the time I spent sitting in that hall after I heard the news. Professor Meggs will be missed in so many ways, and by his students as one of the strongest benevolent forces bringing our department closer together.

I would like to extend my sincere apologies for your loss. I know this must be difficult for everyone. Now is a time for family to come together and remember all of the love shared and cherrished. I always looked at your family with envy because you all were so close and loving. Some would say picture perfect. In time, you all will heal, and it will start to hurt a little less each day. Please let me know if I can do anything to help in this grieving process.

I am deeply honored to have attended your last class as a student new to design. You were the only teacher I have ever known to read Dada poems out loud to a class. You have taught me the idea of Freedom of Speech better. For these experiences I am most thankful. The lessons I have learned will be with me for the rest of my life. Your presence in class is still deeply missed...

Mr. Meggs was such an exceptionally unique man who always went beyond what anyone expected of him. He was my teacher and my friend. After graduating from VCU in the early 90's and moving to Atlanta I found myself struggling careerwise as the economy was in a downturn. Not knowing where to turn or who to talk to, I thought of my professor in VA. With his approachable demeanor and undeniable willingness to help others I felt comfortable calling on him. When he answered his home phone and spent almost an hour with me (both he and his wonderful wife) I forever-after called him my "surrogate advisor". He offered warm and wise advice when I needed it most. In late September of this year I saw him at the Clement Mok event and reminded him of the phone conversation and thanked him again. He still remembered the advice he gave me! And I'm glad I had a chance to thank him after all these years. I cant even begin to imagine how many other students he has touched. He and Mr. Domisse have always been and will always be my two favorite college professors. About going to college, people say "no one can take your education away from you" but I say "no one can take away the memory of the people who affected you the most while in college." Mr. Meggs (and Mr. Dommisee) have always been and will ALWAYS be my favorite professors. Nothing can change that. Mr. Meggs will ALWAYS hold that special place in my heart. I'm sorry that we have lost him and in his loving memory I pray we will all go forward with the thoughts of his strength, tenacity, love and compassion.
