Dennis Beierschmitt Obituary

Dennis Beierschmitt passed away from heart complications on March 14, 2005. Born in Pennsylvania in 1950, Dennis grew up in Virginia and North Carolina. He met his wife, Caroline, in their early teens, and they were married 35 years. He taught German and other subjects for 30 years at Thomas Dale High School, where both his children attended. He supported youth sports through the YMCA and as Thomas Dale's first soccer coach. An active cyclist, he was a familiar figure riding throughout Chester, and supported or participated in many charity rides. He and Caroline attended The First Unitarian Universalist Church of Richmond where they were active in peace, justice and equality efforts. Dennis was devoted to his wife, Caroline; son, Ridley; daughter, Stefanie; nephew, Chris; and to his extended community of family and friends in Virginia, North Carolina, California and Maryland. A visitation will be held Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Chesterfield Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service. There will be a memorial service at The First Unitarian Universalist Church of Richmond on Saturday at 10 a.m. To honor his life, donations may be made to the Fan Free Clinic and The First Unitarian Universalist Church. I was so saddened to hear this news, but I know he is in such a beautiful and wonderful place now that we cannot even imagine. Herr B was my favorite teacher throughout all of high school. I loved German class and will never forget him. He was a model teacher that I feel fortunate to have had. God be with you all.

I still remember how to spell Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzung.

To Caroline, Ridley, and Stef(as he always called you, I can't believe Dennis is gone. I hope to a wonderful place where everyone rides bikes, eats what they want and toasts with beer..german beer..a place where they know the oldies and can dance to them. Dennis you taught me tolerance, new ideas, peace and hope for a better future. I ate lunch with you so often that we just took each other for granit..i won't do that again. You were one of the "girls", along with Craig and you helped us see the other view. I know Dennis will be missed..i already do. Regards fondly, Jane Ward

Of all the teachers I had, Herr Beierschmitt was the only one I had for three years in a row. He was a superb teacher who made classes fun. German Club was one of the more fun groups I was in and left me with many fond memories of high school. My thoughts are with his family.

To Caroline, Ridley, and Stefanie: What a terrific human being Dennis was! The second floor workroom is never going to be the same. There are so many Dennisisms that we have shared this week. We have laughed much remembering the goodness in our dear friend. Thanks for sharing him with us for so many years. We will surely miss his loving way.

I am deeply saddened to learn of Herr Beierschmitt's passing. His enthusiasm for Germany and the German language inspired me to study German at university. His class was always enjoyable. But to his students he was so much more than a language teacher. There were films, field trips, picnics, dining at German restaurants, caroling & Fasching (costume) parties, soccer, German Club meetings & conventions, homecoming preparations, excnange student programs, etc. In between - or even during - classes we discussed life in Germany, music, and - of course - cycling. Just thinking of him brings back so many happy memories of my high school days.

Rest in Peace, Dennis

and loving regards to your family.
