Dear Mr. and Mrs. Zaks:
I had the pleasure of knowing Laurel at CDC. She had a way of showing her genuine personal interest to everyone I saw her meet. Her heart was kind and caring! I read this Bible verse on the day of Laurel's funeral and thought that whatever great pains she had carried, she is at peace. "The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom." This is a sad time for everyone who knew Laurel, most especially her family, and I am sorry for your great loss.

I had the pleasure of knowing Laurel through her attendance in my water aerobics class. Although I have known her for just a short time, I always enjoyed her kind spirit and altruistic attitude. I learned of your tragedy just last evening. I am very troubled and saddened by her recent passing. I hope that she is at peace, and my heart goes out to you in your time of such tremendous sorrow.

I had the honor of serving in the Peace Corps with Laurel in Ecuador. Although I did not know her well enough, I did learn all my survival cooking from her. Every time I cook quinoa or bake banana/carrot bread with oatmeal, I think of her. She continued to serve as an inspiration after Peace Corps as we followed similar paths into public health. She will be remembered for her drive, her dedication, and her desire to make the world a better place. We will miss her as we carry on her work to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

My thoughts are with her friends and family.

It has been years since I last saw Laurel and yet this sad news has hit me as if it were just yesterday. I went to middle school and high school with Laurel and to this day remember her as one of the kindest people a person could ever meet. I remember her sparkling eyes and genuine compassion. Deepest sympathy on her loss to Laurel's parents, brothers, sister and other family and friends.

My fondest memory of Laurel is when I took my first trip out of the country to Spain with Laurel and some other Spanish students. From what I hear, it certainly wasn't Laurel's last trip abroad. She had an amazing life, and I was very sorry to hear about your loss.

To Laurel's entire family,
I feel blessed to have known Laurel and know she will always be remembered as a kind and gentle soul. Being a classmate of hers from Severna Park, I know the entire community is mourning her loss. My very best to the entire family at this very difficult time.

April 3, 2008

Laurel was incredible at reaching out and making friends of all ages where ever she went. Her blue eyes were full of awe and her laugh made people feel right at home.
I remember how much she loved Pittsburgh, until Asheville stole her heart. Maybe it was Laughing Seeds in Asheville that was the deal breaker. She also loved Ali Baba's, the Strip District, Jugo de Mora, and her Grandma's cooking, among many, many other things. Some of the most memorable times in my life were in her company. She will be missed, but not forgotten. Thoughts of her bring joy beyond the sadness.

To all of Laurel's family.. I just heard the news this morning that Laurel had passed away. I knew her many years ago when we were introduced by a mutual friend (Amanda) and she and I became good friends as well. I have fond memories of Laurel from those years and will always remember her as friendly, warm, caring and smiling. I am so impressed by all she was able to accomplish - and deeply saddened that her journey ended so soon. My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time.

Dear Laurel,
Daughter of my heart,
little sister of my dreams,
humanitarian of extraordinary accomplishment,
traveler who soared beyond the dream to relieve suffering on many continents,
how priviledged I am to have known and worked and played with you from the orphanages in Romania to the beaches on the N.H. seacoast. Our connection will forever endure cherished friend - albeit from a far greater distance. All the strength, compassion, help and love you gave so fiercely to so many has returned to gently and lovingly embrace your spirit on its journey into peace.
With a shattered heart I wrap its pieces around the Zak family and the endless others who care far beyond the spoken word.

I knew Laural through my work with her team at CDC. She was always on point and proactively worked to make things better, and strived to facilitate necessary synergies in the issues and countries where she worked. She was impressive and caring.

I am thankful that I did get to know and work with her over the past two years.

My condolences to her family, friends and colleagues in their loss.

Dear Arnie and Maryann,
Peter and I were shocked and saddened at the untimely death of your Laurel. In this neighborhood, she was one of my favorities - whenever she was in our home, our home was brightened. Berrywood is such a special place and all of the kids who grew up here hold a special place in our hearts. It's like one big family here and thus losing her is like losing one of our own. Please know that if there is anything we can do, we will do it. Your are in our hearts and prayers. As is your whole family. Know that we love you

To Laurel's Family,
I met and knew Laurel in a professional context. Though my interactions with Laurel were always work-related, I always felt a connection with her and believe we would have been friends. Intense and spirited, she was also an extremely gentle soul who held a fierce and passionate belief that the world could be a better place. She worked hard to make her vision a reality and was always in search of a solution. Though I only knew Laurel for a short time, she made a lasting impression and will be deeply missed.

April 2, 2008

Arnie, Maryanne, Jason, Ellen & Brian,

It is not possible for Donna & me to find the words that express the emptiness in our lives and the sadness in our hearts that we are feeling about Laurel. We share your pain because in a small, but very real way Laurel was a part of our lives too.

I remember how beautiful I thought Laurel was as a child. But as she grew in all the different dimensions that make us who we are, I could see that there was much more about her that I admired. It was her spirit of unselfishness, her independence, her strong will, the need to be herself, her intelligence, her inner strength, her desire to give to the world more than she received and to help those who could not help themselves that made her such a beautiful and loving human being. I remember what an outstanding competitive swimmer she was in high school. I remember her gentle manner and beautiful smile. And I can still hear the distinctive quality of her voice. We will miss her very much.

Each of you will remain in our thoughts & daily prayers for the weeks and months to come.

Rebecca Merrill

April 1, 2008

Dear, Sweet, Loving, Blue-eyed Laurel, how I miss you! Our last meeting in Winston at Jason and Kristen's house where you were babysitting Lilly brought me the same sense of deep friendship and love as our first meeting in 1994 at our little house in Carrboro where we were housemates. I will never forget our long talks sitting on each other's bed, walking to Weaver Street Market, listening to Ella Fitzgerald or John Denver and looking at all your photographs of the multiple weddings you were in as a bridesmaid. You truly added sparkle, joy, beauty and love to my world and I'm devastated that you're gone.

Maryanne, Arnie, Jason, Kristen, Ellen and Brian, I am so incredibly sad for you and you are all in my prayers as you face the grief that lies ahead of you. God bless you all.
I am planting a garden for Laurel which will have purple and blue flowers in it because I know how much she loved those colors. I hope her spirit finds rest there...

It was my good fortune to have worked with Laurel at CDC for a period of time. We will especially miss her smiling Zaks eyes ...

Laurel and I were friends way back in elementary school. We got grouped together a lot based on our last names starting with W and Z. We also swam together in summer swim meets. We had lost touch but I will forever remember her great smile, energy and beautiful eyes. I was so impressed to see all of the amazing accomplishments she had achieved. What a tragic loss of an amazing woman. My thoughts and prayers are with all of her family.

I've had the good fortune of knowing Laurel since 1994 and I knew the moment I met her that she was special. Laurel's accomplishments are grand, indeed, but I will remember her for her infectious smile, her loving heart and her seemingly unlimited capacity to give without expectations.

Peace, Laurel. You were, and will forever be, well loved.

My deepest condoleances to Laurel's family. I was very shocked and saddened at the news. I work at the CDC in the computer department and got to know Laurel by working with her on her computer. She was always one of the nicest folks here that I had to work with. My sympathies go out to the family at this sad time.

March 31, 2008

My dearest friend. How I wish I could have seen you one more time, to hear your voice, see those sparkling eyes and speak of the things that meant so much to both of us. On the day that fateful phone call from Jan Dodds came and said she had a student who wanted to work at CDC, I never could have known what a wonderful and endearing friend you would become. Thank you for everything you have given and we have shared. Now as you body and soul are at rest, may you have the time to reflect on all you have done for the people of the world.

To Laurel's Family - I know these days are filled with darkness and questions. Laurel was such a fine and dedicated woman and she will be remembered by hundred of people across the world. For she loved everyone and she worked hard at providing all that she could to make the world a better place for those she touched. How wonderful to have a daughter/sister who completed more than she was asked and burned a a place in everyone's heart that she knew.

My prayers and love go out to you.

I have so many memories of Laurel. Growing up, being in Sunday School car pool, having her next to me in classes at SPHS...She was a woman who championed for the underdogs of the world even back in those days. I saw her at the reunion in October also. Her hugs and her eyes were bright and wonderful. Such sadness surrounds me right now. Dr. Zaks and family, may your hearts be at peace in this sorrow filled time.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of Laurel. We hope the family might find comfort in these anecdotes of a place and time Laurel cherished. We first met Laurel at our home in Tena, Ecuador in 1997 and recall fondly those early days helping her transition to rural Amazonian life. Whenever Laurel came to town, she always offered to cook. Those dinners, which seemed to attract every Peace Corp volunteer and kayaker in Napo, may have been the proving grounds for Buen Provecho.

She was such a wonderfully gentle and articulate woman who gave so much of herself, yet so intense in her spirit and determination. She provided vital services and a sanctuary to malnourished children in Ecuador, and really brought those issues into the light. Before she left us, she was able to to share her insights with health professionals around the world who now magnify her impact, making a difference in the lives of young children.

She will be greatly missed. Our sincerest condolences to the family.

I met Laurel during our time in Ecuador. I have never known anyone quite like her. While we had fallen out of contact in recent years I have never forgotten her energy and drive. Any ten normal people living a full life would struggle to make as big of a difference in this world as she did in her 38 years. I will miss her. The world has lost a gem.
