Joel Powell Obituary

Published by Greenwood Funeral Homes & Cremation - Three area locations from Feb. 16 to Feb. 17, 2015.
Joel Preston Powell, Jr. passed away on Sunday, February 15, 2015, at the age of 85. Graveside services: 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Greenwood. Preston was born in Fort Worth, TX, on July 12, 1929. He was a proud member of the Chickasaw Indian Nation. After serving a short stint in the US Army Air Corps, he worked at various jobs until finally retiring from Montgomery Wards after more than 25 years of service as an electronics repair technician. He also worked as an automotive mechanic for family, friends and neighbors. Upon retirement, he spent time working in the Maintenance Department at Keller ISD. Preston loved to stay busy throughout his years, enjoying wood working, making things for others, and tinkering with anything that needed fixing. But, most of all, Preston was happiest having all of his family surrounding him. Everyone enjoyed listening to his stories about growing up. As one of eight children, there were quite a few stories to tell. In his later years, Preston enjoyed the company of his little dog, Mitzi. Preston never met a stranger; he could always initiate a conversation with anyone. He will forever be loved and missed by everyone. Preston was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, five sisters and grandson, Von Powell. Survivors: Preston is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Wanda Powell; brother, Cecil Powell; son, Joel Powell and wife, Ruth; daughters Gail Wolff, and husband, Marty; and Annette Nelon, and husband, Craig. Preston had 10 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

A big part of me is gone now. I am so upset with myself for not coming around more often these last several years. You and Grandma have always meant so much to me. I enjoyed doing woodwork with you and seeing your face light up when family was around. Family get togethers at your house will never be the same. I know you are no longer feeling any pain and seeing loved ones in Heaven again. Give Von a big hug and one day we will all be together again. Love & miss you Papaw.

Aunt Wanda and Uncle Preston were at every family gathering I attended for as far back as I can remember. Uncle Preston always had a smile on his face and had kind words for every neice and nephew in our very large family. Now he is bantering with my Dad in heaven and Granny is once again keeping them in line! ;) I will miss him in this life, but he will be there to greet me one day for our next reunion. Love to Aunt Wanda, Joel, Gail, Annette and their families!

Dad, we are going to miss you so much. I thank you for welcoming me to the family 38 years ago as your daughter-in-law. You always treated me as one of your daughters. You always understood how much I loved the Cowboys and the Rangers, and I enjoyed our conversations. I wish we could have taken you to a Rangers game, but I am afraid you might have yelled something to the umps!!! I also remember how you would like to scare the little kids at Halloween with your pressure hoses! Poor little things!!! You are at rest now. I hope that Von was waiting to see you. Please let him know that we still miss him. Love you Dad!
