Dear Shook family:

Joe was an incredible, loving person, and a devoted friend to all. I will miss his friendship, his love of movies, his pride and his strength. He was an essential part of the Partners in Adventure community; I can't imagine what camp would have been like those many years without his presence.

I will cherish the last time I saw Joe – this past August, at our good friend Ari’s birthday party. Joe greeted me by yelling my name and giving me a big hug; we hadn’t seen one another in a long time. But in a moment the conversation had turned to movies and music, friends and family – Joe’s true loves. It was as if we hadn’t been apart for more than a day.

My prayers are with you during this time of sorrow and with the many people whose lives he changed; through all of us, Joe’s spirit and courage live on.

Everytime I think of Joe, my first thought is 4th of July years ago. He was on his knees in Mamie's backyard trying to push Daniel who was maybe 18 months old around on the little trike. He was so determined. That's what I will remember most about Joe, his fierce determination. The strength in which he attempted everything. The big smile and the where's the boys when I came alone. Love you Joey.

I have known Joe for 7 years. During my years at WCS, and at CVU. Everyday at school I would see Joe in the hallway and each time, we had a secret handshake ritual that we would do. My day wasn't complete until we had that handshake. His positive attitude and smile was infectious and always brightened my day. Joe has taught me so many important life lessons and I'm forever grateful. You will be missed greatly Joe, thanks for being such a great friend.

The Library at CVU will certainly miss Joe. When he would come in to work he always did what I call his "meet and greet." He made it a point to go around the Library before he started saying "hi" to everyone he knew and even ones he didn't know. Dear Shook Family,
I was fortunate to practice yoga with Joe this year at CVU. He brought his smile, sense of humor and his huge heart to every class. I’ll always remember the day I said, “Let’s practice Superman pose.” Joe already knew what Superman pose was. He excitedly lay down on his stomach, lifted his arms and legs to fly and said, “Superman, Superman, Superman.” He was so happy and taught us what happiness really is. A great teacher he was! I love how Joe greeted everyone with love, laughter and gratitude in the hallway. He is a radiant light that will forever shine. I am sending love to you all during this time.

Liz and Family,

I only knew you and Joe for a short time when he as at CVU High School. He impressed me with his sensitivity and compassion. He was a great kid and I am sure he grew into a fine adult. My son, Ryan, and Joe graduated at the same time so I was there to see Joe walk across the stage at UVM. I was very proud of him. I remember you, Liz, as a warm and caring parent who always had Joe's best interests in your heart. My wife and I lost a child many years ago, so I know a little of what you are going through. Take care of yourselves. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
