L. Hawkins Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 5, 2011.
HAWKINS, L. Michael E. October 27, 1918 - February 27, 2011 Peacefully at the Lynwood Park Lodge in Ottawa, with his loving wife Margaret at his side. Survived by brother George, and predeceased by brothers Channing, Ian, and sister Faith. Michael was the much beloved father of the late John Hawkins, Kerry and Janet Hawkins of Manassas, VA, Robert and Lynn Hawkins of Ottawa, Kathy Lagasse (Hawkins) of Nanaimo, Janet Hawkins and Art Stewart of Ottawa, and Miriam Hawkins of Toronto. He will also be missed by his grandchildren, Ariston, Keltie, John, Rob, Colin, Kimberly, Jesse, Mike and Angela, and great-grandchildren Bryn, Coen, Samar and Eleanor. Michael was a kind and gentle man, but tireless and hard-working. At his happiest tackling any project, he had a gift for engineering. From an early age, largely self taught, he developed skills in highway and runway engineering. His service in the war helped build the airports that trained our commonwealth pilots. It was then that he met his eighteen year old bride Margaret in Claresholm, Alberta. The adventure that followed lasted sixty-seven happy years. His substantive career was with Transport Canada where he contributed much to the growth of Canada's airport runway and support facilities. In recent years, Michael loved the cottage he built on Bob's Lake, Ontario, where he never sat idle if there was anything to be done. Look for the one with all the rock and concrete. He also enjoyed many trips home to British Columbia over the years. Above all he cherished his time with family. Memorial Services will not be immediate. Donations in his memory could be made to the charity of your choice. Condolences, donations or tributes may be made at www.tubmanfuneralhomes.com .

Michael was a good man and a good father. He was industrious, intelligent, always engaged and curious. With the exception of politicians, he always focussed on the positive in people. He was loyal and dedicated to assisting his family. Michael enjoyed life and appreciated every moment more than anyone I ever knew.
