Kevin M. Witte Obituary

Each year, our community has a running race dedicated to our fallen local son Christopher Scherer who lost his life serving his country. The proceeds from this event have helped take care of our wounded soldiers here, and those brave men serving our country overseas. The community takes time out to remember all those who have made the ultimate sacrifices so that we may enjoy the freedom we sometimes take for granted. My son served three tours in Iraq, and he could have easily been one of the Marines that were tragically lost. I thank God that we have him back safely in the states and I weep often for the parents of lost soldiers who were not so lucky. Our country is great because of people like Kevin, I can't tell you how proud we all are of his unselfish dedication to his country.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

We can't imagine what you have been going through since being notified of the death of your young Warrior. The Military and families all over the USA and world are grieving with you and praying for you. What a very brave individual you have in your family that would give up a life for their homeland and its people so they can remain free. Your Freedom Fighter has served the Country above and beyond the call of duty, let no one ever tell you different. With the mission now completed your Warrior has been redeployed to Heaven to sit on the right hand of the Supreme Commander and Chief. I know me and jon boy only got to know you for a short time, but you left a lasting impression on our hearts and minds. We thank you for serving and making the ultimate sacrifice.We'll all do our best to take care of Mel and little nut-nut.Making sure every opportunity we have to tell him how much he was loved by his daddy, we do. We miss you Kevin. Catch you on the flip. We'll never forget.

A Letter to Heaven:

Kevin, it's taken me this long to be able to get to a place where i can put my pain into perspective. Losing you has been a terrible shock to so many, and, as so many have already said, the loss is incalculably huge. You have been an extraordinary soldier, always giving 100%. You have been my daughter's best friend and northern star, giving her an everlasting legacy in your love for her. Your devotion to your little son will be recounted to him in many ways, many times, by all of us. Your fun-loving sense of humor, your willingness to always go out of your way for others, your drive and ambition and energy have been and will continue to be the inspiration for us to be the best we, in turn, have to offer to the world. I do not have any idea why this has happened, but perhaps by following your ideals we can continue your mission to make this a better place. You would not want us to be too grieved for too long, i think, but like our paris trip, pause to regroup and then carry on. You will be missed every day, until we meet again. Peace and love from all of us.

My name is Jessica. Kevin is my little brother. It has been a month now since Kevin was taken from us. I just now bringing myself to read these entries. I cried when I read many of the things that were written by those who new him and touched by those who did not. My heart goes out to those who have also lost loved ones. Kevin was a wonderful son, brother, husband, father, and soldier. We will all miss greatly. Thank you everyone for the beautiful words of comfort. May we all remember that FREEDOM ISN'T FREE!
And Kevin, we will all see you again someday soon.

The true heroes amongst us are those who dutifully and somehow willingly go to those places where angels fear to tread; they do it for and even in spite of loved ones left behind, to insure their family's safety and secure the freedoms so often taken for granted until something like this happens and we awaken to how temporary it can all be and how easily taken away. Kevin was the quintessential soldiers' soldier, organized, dedicated and doing the job he loved. He was a beloved and playful father, and a loving husband. Many blessings upon his loved ones left behind to cope and go on without him - pause and hold his memory as you reach out and cleave to one another in order to continue your lives without him - family is precious, his absence can be a loving reminder of just how precious.

My deepest sympathy to my family on or lost of a great man! I only knew him for a short time but I had the feeling that he loved what he was doing. This war is a hard thing on all of us. I never knew it would come so close to home. I am personally effected by it everyday from now on. I pray for the troops and their families. It is a hard thing but I also pray that our learders use wisdom when it comes to making the decisions that will effect so many. Please continue to keep our family in your prayers.

We know we can't find words that can comfort you and you family. Only know that you are not alone and Kevin will not be forgotten. He and our son Josh (killed Aug. 30 in Iraq) gave us all the greatest gift possible and are now waiting for us as Soldier Angels.

To Melissa, This is to let you know that I am thinking of you in your time of sorrow. Kevin was a great young man who did great things with his life and for his country. I was glad to have met you even though it was only for a short time. May God and His Angels watch over you and help you to find peace at this time.

To the Witte family: I previously signed Kevin's guest book. I understand Kevin will be buried at ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY. I live close to ANC and I visit there two or three times a week. I promise you that each time I am there I will visit/honor Kevin.

I served with Kevin in B Co. 2/504 PIR 82nd Abn Div. His impact on the soldiers was long lasting and memorable. Kevin was also a good friend who I had the pleasure of skydiving with in our off time. My heartfelt condolences go out to his wife and family. Kevin will be sorely missed by all of us who were fortunate to work with him.

To Melissa and the Witte family,
I want to say with heart felt sorrow that we are sorry for your loss. Kevin was a great leader, soldier, and American, but more importantly he was a great husband, father, and friend. I also served with Kevin we he was assigned to the 82nd Long Range Surveillance Detachment Fort Bragg, NC. He was an outstanding soldier that always put others before himself. He will be missed by many as he has had a direct impact on many soldiers lives and careers. My condolences for his wife, and family.

To the Family of Staff Sgt. Kevin M. Witte:
If your child can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 as well and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for right now. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten . You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
