I was saddened to hear of Dr. Rehder's sudden death, and extend to all of his family our sincere condolences. He was obviously a much-beloved husband, father, grandfather, and teacher. I took his class the fall of 2010 as a transfer student from the University of New Orleans. I'm in my early 50s and of course he talk to me about his LSU days, how he met his lovely wife, in addidtion to showing the class many pictures of his family on vacations to far away places. He made you feel like one of the family and you were with him on the vacations. I enjoy talking to him about my adventure of Katrinas and what it took to survive in those trying days. I will always remember him as one of my favorites at University of Tennessee...
God Bless

I had to take a 'cultural' Geography class over summer school in the mid-90's. I wasn't looking forward to the format necessarily, but Dr. Rehder brought his Appalachian world to life. His passion for his subject was contagious, and the architectural overview of Appalachian buildings, a gift.

Dr. Rehder showed a lot of patience and interest in me, a mediocre student. He seemed to love life and positively impacted a lot of people. I'll always have happy memories of him.

Dr. Rehder was by far my favorite person at UT. I cannot recall the number I times I've said "I wish he were my grandpa." I shared a love of Appalachia with him, and am indeed blessed for being able to work with him. I had actually intended to visit him on campus Thursday morning. This news is heartbreaking to me. I extend my condolences to his family.

Dr. Rehder was my favorite professor at UT. I had three of his classes and would have taken that many more if I could. He loved teaching and it was obvious he cared about his students. I feel blessed and honored to have got the chance to learn from him. I will never forget you Sir.

I am so sorry to hear this news. I was a student of Dr. Rehder, and he was an inspiration to me and many other people. I will never forget what I learned from him, and I will continue to pass the stories that he shared with me on to anyone who will listen. I owe so much of my knowledge of Appalachia and Louisiana to him. I just saw him for the first time in years this past fall, and he remembered me. I am so glad that I got to talk to him once more. I am so sad to hear of his passing and I pray that his family finds peace.

My sympathies to Dr. Rehder's family. He was one of my favorite professors, and always told our classes great stories about Lousiana. He taught me a lot, and always made class enjoyable and interesting. He'll always live on in my memories, and in the stories he told.

Just a great professor with amazing experiences, stories, and tips to share. Extremely funny too!

Made class interesting and fun... Spent a lot of time talking to him outside of class. Inspired me to do some geography stuff.

Will miss him very much so.

My condolences to the family of wonderful Dr. Rehder. He was the warm heart of the Geography dept. and made us students laugh more often than not. I will forever know how to order a sandwich in Louisiana because of him : ) He was and is very much loved.
