I moved to Philadelphia in August of 1968 to attend graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania, and I was active for several years at Penn Newman when Fr. Murphy was the Chaplain. Murph, as we called him, allowed us a good bit of latitude with respect to doing some interesting liturgical things. For example, after the rock opera "Jesus Christ, Superstar" came out, we sang "Hosanna" from that musical at the Palm Sunday liturgy. When we decided it was time for women to be serving at Mass, we informed Murph that Mary Theresa Bonhage would serve Mass for him (as far as we know, that was the first time a woman served at Mass at the Penn Newman Center--this was probably in about 1971). Murph presided over the building of the new Newman Center and the move from the original Newman Hall. When Cardinal Krol came to preside at the Mass of dedication of the new building, Murph even let us sing Sr. Miriam Therese' "Three Tents" (I think it was the Feast of the Transfiguration). You will appreciate the irony if you look at the lyrics of this lovely Scripturally-based song. When another friend and I visited Fr. Murphy at his new parish after he moved on from being Penn Newman Chaplain, he was delighted to show us the result of the much-needed renovations in the parish school. As a teacher, I was quite pleased with Murph's interest in and dedication to education in the parish school. Of course, this is not surprising given the dedication to education of his twin sister.
I am glad to have known and worked with Fr. Murphy. He was a good man and a good priest.

To the Family, I only knew Fr. Jim for a short time, but he was a remarkable person who had a real insight to people. I will always remember the few visits I enjoyed with him. I am so sorry for our loss.Bob Niederriter
