BLAZE GUSIC Obituary

GUSIC
BLAZE J.
On Tuesday, June 7, 2011, age 83, of Camp Hill, PA. He is survived by his best friend and wife of 48 years, Joan C. Gusic; children, Dr. Maryellen E. Gusic-Joel, M.D. (Kenneth L. Joel) and Dr. Blaze R. Gusic M.D. (his partner, Jay A. Alpert) and "God's Gifted Grandson," Blaze Lawson Joel. Blaze was the son of Croation immigrants, Blaz and Katherine, and was always proud of his Croation heritage. He served in the Army Air Corp. during WWII. Following the war, he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh, and obtained his graduate degrees from Shippensburg and Duquesne Universities. In his studies, Blaze planned to pursuit a career in law, but instead discovered a passion for the early golden era of television broadcasting with the DuMont Television Network in 1950. He worked as a producer and director at the legendary KDKA, which provides CBS programming today. During his tenure, Blaze met his wife, Joan, who he would sometimes meet for a movie after working on a late-night newscast, and she remained at his side for decades to follow. Blaze worked in all facets of early TV, from the days of black and white, through the digital information age. In 1961, he accepted a role that would shape public television with the Pennsylvania Department of Education. His role as Coordinator of Educational Television led to the development of not only one public television station, but of a network comprised of several stations. His work allowed him to pioneer educational broadcasting concepts including distance learning and conducting classroom activities through the concept of blackboard by wire. Blaze's love of learning turned him into a visionary, whose expertise led to several positions on educational boards in both the local and national realm. He was recognized for his leadership and service to many organizations, including American Federation of Teachers and Croations Fraternal Union of America. He was also commissioned as a Colonel by the Commonwealth of Kentucky. In the 1970s, Blaze served on the production team of AIT's Inside Out Series, which was later awarded both an Emmy and Academy award for excellence in educational broadcasting. Outside of his professional accomplishments, Blaze's sense of adventure took him to more than a hundred countries on six continents. He loved people and during the experiences of traveling the globe, Blaze met countless people through his ability to enjoy a conversation. Back home, it seemed everywhere he went, everyone knew who he was. Family was always his top priority. Blaze participated in all aspect of the lives of his children, and cherished his grandson, never missing one of his activities. Viewing will be held Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the HEALY-HAHN FUNERAL HOME, INC., 512 Grant Ave., Millvale. Mass of Christian Burial Saturday 10 a.m. St. Nicholas Church, Millvale. Memorial donations may be made to Blaze's favorite charity the American Heart Association.

We are sorry to hear of your loss and wish we could be there however can't leave Grace at the university of Georgia! I will always remember your father as his love and affection was evident at Maryellen's wedding. He was a great man and is in a better place. I'm sure he and Kathleen are already catching up and getting St. Peter caught up. It's only appropriate that he was here as BJ graduated and I'm sure he was aware of all his accomplishments.

To the family of Mr Gusic,

I'm sorry for your loss. I did not know Mr Gusic, but I clicked on his obituary, to see if he were someone I may have known; and I just could not stop reading about his kindness, his numerous contributions, and his accomplishments. Reading about him made me wish I had the opportunity to have met Mr Gusic. But you folks are all blessed, because you do know him, and he will always be a part of you...and some day, you will all see him again, in the Most Beautiful Place...and that's the best thought possible. I just wanted you folks to know how a complete stranger felt. My prayers are that the sorrow you feel now will be replaced by smiles, each and every time you think of him.

Joan and family,
Ruth Coon called to tell me of the loss of your beloved Blaze. I have fond memories of both the professional and personal interaction of Blaze, Nile, and Marlowe. What an incredible team they were. Their energies and talent helped establish the firm foundation of what is now Pennsylvania public broadcasting. Each added his own strength and dedication; together they led the way for spreading education across the state.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. God bless you all.
