LESLIE MASON Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Sep. 11, 2011.
MASON, Leslie Longstreet Jr., 84, of Powhatan, passed away Friday, September 9, 2011. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Helen Chiles Mason; one son, Ben Mason and his wife, Leslie, of Norfolk; three daughters, Lee Baker and her husband, Chip, of Saigon, Vietnam, Ann Mason of Basalt, Colo., Mary Margaret Evans and her husband, Tom, of Richmond; seven grandchildren, Reilly, Brother, Reid Mason, Ford, Grey Baker, Davis, Mason Evans; one brother, Bill Mason and his wife, Kitty, of Lexington, Ky.; one nephew, Mark Mason, of Atlanta, Ga. Judge Mason was an Army veteran of WWII. Following his armed service, he attended Purdue University and continued his education at Washington and Lee University where he received his law degree in 1951. Upon moving to Powhatan in 1956, he began practicing law and in 1966 he began serving as County Judge. In 1974, he was appointed Juvenile and Domestic Relations Judge for the 11th Judicial district serving Powhatan, Amelia, Nottoway, Dinwiddie and Petersburg until retiring in 1994. Following his retirement, he continued to serve as substitute judge throughout the commonwealth. He was a long time member and trustee of Providence Presbyterian Church in Powhatan. He was one of the founders of Central Virginia Bank in the early 1970s. At his death, he was the senior most member of the Fine Creek Club in Powhatan. His likes and joys were fairly simple. Affectionately known as G-Daddy by his beloved grandchildren, he loved making breakfast for all those around but especially those seven. He also loved to travel around the country taking backroads whenever possible. Even after his retirement, he was greatly appreciated by many in the community for his generous and sound advise, particularly to the younger generations. The family will receive visitors Monday, September 12, 2011 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy. (Rt. 60), Powhatan. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at 3 p.m. in the Providence Presbyterian Church, 1950 Ridge Rd., Powhatan. Followed by a reception at "The Glebe," home of the Mason family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Powhatan Volunteer Rescue Squad P.O. Box 247, Powhatan, Va. 23139.

It has been almost a year since our loss, think of him so very often and expect him to call so we can have one of our talks. I know you must miss him terribly. What a great person, friend he was.

Dear Helen and Family,

I just learned of Les's passing, and I am at a loss for words. He was one of the kindest and dearest men I know. He was always caring and considerate of those who were friends and those who came to him and before him in their time of need and crisis. He was a mentor to those of us who took up the practice of law, and he always took the time to talk with us and guide us. I will always remember how his bright smile and sparkling eyes lit up a room. We share your loss and grief as his passing is a loss to the community he served so well for so many years. You are all in our prayers during this difficult time.

I am so sorry I was unable to attend the services.

I only met Judge Mason and Helen twice since moving to Powhatan in 1996. On both of those occasions both Judge Mason and his wife were the most gracious individuals I've ever met. You didn't know it, but you both made a profound impact on me and greatly made my transition to rural living bearable. I was impressed by the generosity Judge Mason exhibited to Mt. Zion Baptist Church. I hope knowing that Judge Mason will be sincerely missed by so many will be a comfort to you and your famiy. Sincerely, James & Carolyn Mayo, Ridge Rd., Powhatan, VA

Dearest Aunt Helen and family. Les had a twinkle in his eyes and always had a kind word for me and my family. Uncle Les was always good about seeing the positive side of things, even when they looked poor and was very diplomatic when giving advice. An awesome man that will deeply missed by our family and many...We love you all and are very sorry for your loss. Hugs and kisses, Dave, Fran, Michelle and Nick

No, this is not what I expected to see, cannot tell you how heartbroken I am. Cannot type through my tears. He was so extremely special, had a heart of gold and was a true friend and inspiration to me. I spoke of him so often, people thought he was a member of my family and in my heart he was and will always will be. Helen, my heart is with you and the family. Will miss him dearly.
